The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Hands-off Impressions; Potion System Detailed

Really excited for this game. But i am anxious they´ll put again all the effort in the beginning of the game. Witcher 2 dropped down a cliff mid act 2 in regards of general polish and ambition.

This game looks amazing.

For someone that hasn't played the previous 2 ( yea yea, shoot me ) , will I be missing out on stuff or will I be fine ?

They've taunted high-end PC users, saying that even great rigs might not be able to run this game with all settings maxed.

I refuse to run this game without all settings maxed (downsampling notwithstanding).

Everything so far seem damn impressive and not a hint of anything negative. The short clips showing a organic and lively world on a huge has me pretty blown away. Will be amazed if they get it running really good on consoles.

Last Quotation in OP..
Definitive end?! and no more tie up loose ends?!
Really?!
Please tell me they just didn't spoil it ffs. Not even a release date yet and propably just had the biggest spoiler i've ever seen, in both regards of Story and Gameplay. wtf

Please tell me i'm looking to much into that yeah.. Maybe the meant Definitive Edition?
*cough..
Yeah yeah, that's what they meant.
*rolls eyes*

And,
That second Gif is, Beautiful.

Dang this previews got me wanting to run through the Witcher 2 for the third time..... but my backlog won't allow it :(
Actually, the Witcher games are my backlog right now. I'm playing through the first game now, and I'm determined to finish them both before the third one launches.

I'll probably end up picking up TW3 on PS4, though. I'm not really in the market for upgrading my PC this year, and I'm not sure my current system will be able to run this one well enough. And comfy-couch syndrome, of course.

Normally I do not give into hype anymore but for these games I just can not help it, such excellence is what I play games for.

I interpreted that as "The game ends, so after the story you can't go around the world completing side-quests and stuff you missed" like most open-world games. Like Fallout 3 before the DLC. I didn't see it as a spoiler, but more a "don't be surprised when this happens".

Cool, i can accept it that way then.

I didn't want to be thinking all that, all the way up till release and then more so once i finally play this game tip toeing around playing, with a box of tissues on standby.lol

How exactly is does this new potion system make anything different? If you still have to go in the menu to craft the potions, what difference does it make if you do that before or during a fight?

Judging by the gifs, it just looks unreal. As if, we aren't technologically there for what the gifs leave for the imagination, in assuming what the game will be like.

It just looks like a generational leap... really expect to see this game's hype skyrocket once they show us more.

I'm curious how they are going to explain the game to console gamers who haven't got the chance to play the whole series. Did Witcher 2 on Xbox detail the story in Witcher 1? This is a whole trilogy, isn't it?

The first two games are pretty self contained. There are some story elements that carry through but you can play the second game without having played the first one, and TW3 will probably be the same. CDPR released a video summary of the first game along with TW2 in order to explain what happened and stuff.

No no, you still have to prepare before a fight. The difference is in the Witcher 2 you'd prepare a potion and the effects would last for 30 seconds starting on consumption, whereas now you consume the potion and it sits in your "metabolism" until you CHOOSE to release the effects.

Witcher 2: take potion -> effects last for 30 seconds, then you're done
Witcher 3: take potion -> doesn't come into effect until you choose to, if you find you didn't need it, it's still in your "metabolism" for the next battle.

Previously you couldn't drink potions during a fight. You had to do it out of battle and many times you had no idea what you would have to face or even if you would have to fight something. This led to potions being wasted or your ass being kicked because of lack of potion effects.

Now you just drink the potion and if you need it you release the effects.

There needs to be a faster, more streamlined way to make and drink potions. I barely did it in W2 because the process was so cumbersome. What they've done to potions in W3 seems like an improvement, but if I have to meditate to drink or alchemize, I'm still not going to do it. Didn't help in W2 that the game seemed to love dropping fps whenever I meditated.

Then they should make it extremely tough to get by without them. More how they were in 1.

Ok that makes sense. I didn't remember that you couldn't use potions in the middle of battles in Witcher 2. Thanks for clearing that up.

“The potions will work in a different way than in The Witcher 2. So now you will prepare them, you will drink them before a fight, but you can release the effect of those whenever you want. So it’s not like you’ve drunk the potion and you have 30 seconds of boost and then it wears off. You can start the fight in the moment it suits you, and if the fight proves hard, you can just release the effect through your metabolism. But if the fight is easy, you can preserve that and use it in the next fight.”

Bout time!

I keep getting more excited each time I see this. The potion stuff sounds really neat, a nice balance. Also like the economy stuff.

Gotta play through 2 again before this comes out and refresh my memory. Time to do
elf's
side of the story.

I really need to upgrade my PC for this game. My GTX 570 screams at me when I try to play Witcher 2, I can't even imagine how low my frames will be when I play this.

Is the series known for having good SLI support? I'm considering getting two 780s.

I'm really curious as to why they haven't shown that 30 min. closed preview to the public. By all accounts it was incredible. With the little they've shown and how ambitious the game seems, I'd be very surprised if The Witcher 3 actually came out in 2014. It just doesn't seem like it's possible.

I had the same thought, actually. Everything we've seen just screams "delayed until 2015" to me.

Liking the sound of the potion mechanics. I never really bothered with any potions outside Swallow and Cats eye while playing Witcher 1 and 2. Hopefully they'll convince me to use them more this time around.

Man. This game looks gorgeous. Ever since I first took that boat to the Swamps in Witcher 1 I knew Cd Projekt Red was on to something special. :)

I don't like the changes to the potion system, but the rest is fantastic.

Yeah it seems a bit silly, but the rest does indeed sound great.

My hype is maximum. I do not mean in an exaggerated sort of way, but like I've never been this hyped before. Loved the books and previous games so much. Nothing major they've explained so far seems to dissuade me, I have so much faith in CDPR.

Uhh does the new potion system make any sense ?

Why not just be able to drink it mid battle like TW1 ?

Metabolism control is pretty weird.

I suppose they were trying to balance between: 1) potions are more realistic if they don't work instantly and 2) not having to load you system with a bunch of negative and positive attributes all at once now that the map is bigger are requires more travel.

I assume there's a limit on how long those potions remain in your system. So if you don't use them in a certain amount of time, the effect goes away and you have to drink it again.
