Wow I really thought the X1 would pull ahead this time. The console had a stealth price-cut and its biggest exclusive for the year... Does this mean its a safe bet that the PS4 will be over the X1 for monthly sales until the holiday season?

The NPD Group has issued its March video game sales report, revealing a 28 percent drop in software sales (including PC) to $432 million. Hardware, however, soared 78 percent on the strength of the new consoles, totaling $395 million. Accessories were also up 4 percent to $224 million. Overall, total industry sales increased 3 percent to $1.03 billion.

NPD noted that Sony's PlayStation 4 led hardware sales (for the third month in a row) despite the Xbox One exclusive Titanfall topping the games chart. Globally, Sony announced recently that PS4 had surpassed 7 million units sold.

Hardware in general put in a robust performance during the last month, boosting the industry year-over-year. "PS4 and Xbox One continue to see success with cumulative sales of the two consoles through the first five months currently totaling more than double that of their predecessors, the PS3 and Xbox 360," noted NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

In addition to Titanfall, game sales were driven by Sony's inFamous on PS4, Ubisoft's South Park: The Stick of Truth and Activision's Call of Duty: Ghosts. Check out the top 10 chart below.

Not if MS drops to $299.

Wow well done Sony, with the hype machine in full flow since e3 for titanfall was not expecting that, i'm not close enough to a bunker, i'm heading down the tube station like they did in the blitz, see you all on the other side.

Oh mah gawd. PS4 wins in the USA during Titanfall release month. Did NOT see that coming.

Pre-announcement hype justified. Off to the bunker I go.

Easier to check in here than the NPD thread - "cumulatively sold through" Sony wording = to consumers, "sold in" which MS used is to retailers?

I'd really like to know how much Microsoft forked over for the Titanfall exclusive. It's hard to believe PS4 outsold the XBO in march.

What in the actual fucking fuck. But but but, the gaming press told me this was going to be the next call of duty.

In all seriousness, I don't think many expected that small of a bump. There was so much marketing for Titanfall and then you had the bundle. Titanfall was receiving an incredible amount of hype leading up to its launch from nearly every major gaming outlet. It's crazy to see that it only gave it a 60k unit bump.

The funny thing is, we all thought MS scored here, paid money for this GIGANTIC franchise that was going to turn the tide and dominate.

Turns out, EA and Respawn are the ones who scored, they sold the exclusivity to a game that was presented as this big thing, but turned out to have minimal impact on sales.

A Viva Pinata game might just as well had the same bump. I am not even trying to be funny, a Fable game could have had the same impact, or any other second rate franchise that barely registers on the radar as a big seller.

I don't think that's a safe assumption to make. Many (including me) were convinced that February's bump from January had to do with Titanfall as well, which seemed extremely likely at the time. With these numbers seeing a modest jump from February, it seems that's even more likely imo

Well sorry to burst their bubble, I suspect Sales are even worse outside of USA, so yeah take of that what you will.

Manufactured hype was a real phenomenon. It's not that the game wasn't good if you're into that mold of modern FPS (I can't play modern competitive FPS, believe they ruined the genre), but it's that they were inflating its importance. It just wasn't doing much special that the genre hadn't seen before. It was just combining one or two new things and applying ideas from a variety of FPS that have done similar things.

Yeah all this talk about Hype being 'manufactured' and here we are with a decline during launch of their game, there should be a name for this kind of phenomenon.

As soon as I saw Nomura during Sony's E3 conference I knew.

Hah, I felt very similar, even though I thought FFXV and KH3 were exclusive. :D
