DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

It's a shame the gaming media haven't grabbed hold of this in any meaningful way. I'm pretty sure Sony would be forced to do something about this if they got enough heat about it from the big sites out there.

They already have.

"A very small number of users have reported to us that the rubber surface of their Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK 4)'s analog sticks have torn. Although the rubber material of the analog sticks fulfills our quality assurance standard, we will inspect individual DUALSHOCK 4 controllers experiencing this symptom, and will replace them with new ones for free as long as they are within the warranty."

I just got hit with a tear on my left thumb stick for two DS4's over the last week. I think it's mainly due to friends abusing the stick during FIFA sessions. Gonna have to get some grips

Yes, you should. The ORB ones are great and you can get them from amazon. See the link in my previous post.

I didn't know these had 1 year warranties. I'll probably contact Sony sometime soon; my left nub is practically flat, now. No tearing, but it's so worn down that it's inevitable.

Do replacements have warranties themselves?

Visited bestbuy/futureshop/Walmart/ebgames this weekend.

The controller of every ps4 demo had the rubber peeling off the sticks.

Doesn't exactly inspire confidence. It was a big turn off.

Oh that's awesome. I gotta get on this as well.

And yet the reports are still coming in about ruined sticks both old and new.
A few pages back a guy noticed his sticks started going bad and he just got a PS4 a month ago.

We have absolutely no official word on anything having been done about this

Understood, but I think I've heard one person say they had an issue with the newer, harder rubber sticks. It certainly seems like the ones failing are the original "eraser-head" rubber.

Didn't have a problem with a new controller but the launch one that came with the box is peeling off (and also has random short disconnections issues... that's new?). Ordered a set of grips will try them on extensively for the destiny beta

The real indicator of whether Sony is permanently fixing this will be when the new DS4 colors start coming out, beginning on Sept 9 with the white controller (and also the white PS4 Destiny bundle):

Sept 9 - white
Sept 30 - camo & blue

I've got my white PS4 preordered (and extra white DS4) and will let you guys know my impressions when I get it...although I have no point of reference because I've never touched a DS4 with the poor material.

Yeah. Apparently, there are batches of controllers currently on shelves that have improved stick materials on top of 2013 controllers that haven't sold or been shipped out until recently and it's hard to tell without opening them up. The new colours should make it really easy to find out.

swapped mine with some xbone sticks eventhough my sticks are fine atm, very easy to do and they are closest as possible to the original DS4 style you can get and they look good, didn't realize the X1 stick were pure plastic, there is a quality difference but them being hard plastic will make them last longer , I think I'm happy with them.

Is fully opening up the DS4 as tricky as the DS3? I know DS3 was doable, but the triggers were tricky if the springs popped out.

So Sony is replacing them? Sorry, lttp here, never had a problem with my sticks till this month.

What is the process to getting them replaced by Sony.

Yes, they do. The process is different in every country so get in touch with your local PlayStation hotline.

Both of mine were replaced for the second time now. One of them seems to have the broken rubber, the other one though feels different from all the others I had so far. Much more textured. Looks like this is the first one I'll be able to play with for more than 2-3 months.

Has anyone sent their DS4 to Sony from the UK?

Yep. Took about a week for it to get repalced (including P&P). However, due to their greed they're going to say that you have to pay for postage. But, I made a stink and was able to get them to pay for shipping, so don't let them bend you over considering it's their own blunder.

That's not right, they must not be official X1 sticks. The sticks on my bundled X1 controller are rubber all over the ribbed edges and the concave resting.

Concave resting and ribbed edges are like hard rubber yeah, they're not soft like the DS4's or thumb grips I've used more like bike handle grips and are a different material to the actual stick.
I'll try upload a picture

Realz or fakez? They do the job either way but if some could be nice enough to point me in the direction of real ones if they are fake I'd be very grateful.

Nice.I love the X1 sticks so much. I can only imagine what it must feel like to have them on the more comfortable DS4. Add the X1's triggers and rumble motors to that and you'd have the perfect controller.

They are very similar in design which is why I did it, the DS4's are obviously more rubbery and tend to grip and pull more to you thumb rather then catch and grip like the X1's if you know what I mean (which is why we're having this problem I guess)
the X1 sticks are taller and seem smaller too or I'm just imaging it.

They paid for the postage to send it to them, but I haven't been told I have to pay anything as of yet. The person I spoke to recently said it takes 10 working days, which is quite surprising.

Did they send you a brand new DS4, or did they fix your old one?

Definitely not real. I received two different kinds of joysticks when I ordered my Xbox One sticks. Most of them were like yours, hard plastic and very uncomfortable. The rest were like the real Xbox One sticks with proper rubber for the top of the joystick. The hard plastic ones are junk. You'll get a blister from them for sure lol.

Where you get the real ones?

I don't know, sorry. I ordered 20 from ebay and like 75% of them were the bad ones so I can't recommend the seller I bought mine from.
Those came from Hong Kong, there are some from a UK seller for £3.49, guess I can just ask the seller.

I ordered a pack of 10 on Ebay and I think they're all real. They're definitely rubber on top and the little bumps look sharper and less rounded than the ones in the photo.

On another note, I saw my first PS4 kiosk on the weekend, in a Best Buy. I checked the controller and the left stick had a nasty tear in the rubber, exposing the plastic underneath. I took a photo. I'll upload later when I'm not at work. Personally I'm in the "its universal and will happen to all your controllers eventually" camp.

Just discovered that the left stick cover has essentially torn on mine. I think it's been like this for a bit and it felt a bit odd so I looked closely and saw the tear :(

I've just spoken to a seller dipway, he said his sticks are the real deal with rubber tips just like the original X1 pad, I will confirm when they arrive if anyone want to get some.

It was a brand new one.

By chance do you have the PS protection plan? The terms of the agreement say that shipping is covered, but maybe that is only on the console itself. When my time inevitably comes to send the controller in for repair (I'll switch the sticks after my warranty expires...in 2.5 years), I guess I'll need to report back on whether shipping is indeed covered with the protection plan.
I was going to get the protection plan but I never got around to it. I'd be upset if I paid for the protection plan and still had to pay for shipping. I'm kind of surprised I have to pay shipping "without" the protection plan but it's only a couple bucks so I'll just be happy they are going to send me a new one. Sony gets one "OOPS!". The most trouble I had with any console was when I had to blow into my NES games to get them to work. My other DS4 is doing fine but I feel like it's just a matter of time before it wears out. Might go ahead and get some replacement stick covers for when it happens.

Just talked to support to send my original DS4 in. The 2nd one I purchased is also starting to wear, though. :(

So a little bit of the rubber finally ripped off of my launch controller. What should I do? Contact Sony for a replacement? Order replacement sticks? ...Order replacement Xbox One sticks?

Order the Xbox One sticks. Best controller mod ever. You won't have to send your controllers away, and if you get a pack of 10, you'll have enough for any new controllers you'll get in the future. Hopefully you don't get any fake plastic sticks though. Sounds like I got lucky.

I second this. My daughter bit off some of my DS4 stick and I replaced them with the Xbox one sticks. Best decision ever.

Same here. on live chat with Sony right now getting my torn controller sorted out. my second one is worn to hell, but I'd feel bad asking for a replacement for something that wasn't torn.

All this talk about contacting customer support to return faulty controllers are giving me flashbacks to the red ring of death incident on 360.
Of course this is not as serious as that, only with all the support talk and all.
Such a mess of a situation.

Amazon has them in-stock to for those whom like to shy away from Ebay. Honestly just grab the Xbone sticks folks. A lot more durable. Has anyone tried the Aluminum Alloy Sticks yet? Are those any good?

My friend's rubber on the left stick had a piece ripped off when I visited him over this last weekend. I laughed and asked him what happened and he said he was just playing WD normally and it just came off.

Fail on Sony's part to go cheap.

while it's ultimately Sony's responsibility, I'm getting more and more fed up with the gaming press and their inability to do actual investigative journalism and ask some hard questions. the DS4 rubber, share bugs, ID@xbox parity clause, horrible timed exclusivity deals, micro-transactions creeping into every game. all big problems in our eyes but what do I see on the front page of most gaming sites? "we snagged the first look of this hyped up game! stay tuned for the 9/10 score we'll be giving it in four months!"

it seems like an extension of a publishers PR arm. they have the access to these people and have the ability to ask those questions but they rarely come up. the journalists should be working for the gaming public's best interest instead of the manufacturers/publishers
