why did Sony go backwards on USB/hid compatibility?

I dont play consoles anymore, so i just found out about this through a friend. I am completely stunned. Last gen you could plug anything in. I can't imagine the reason was technical.

If I was a PS3 owner migrating to PS4 I'd be fuming!

What gives, does anyone know?

Maybe more security. I had a feeling sony would be selling memory cards, and not let you use your own HDD on PS4 after the stuff that happened with PS3 which they were very open with. PS3 openness is probably something they learned from since it burned them.

I remember people bitching about the ps3 multimedia features, because of the cost, and how it wasn't a games machine. Times have changed.

Making only licensed stuff work gets them more money.

The company isn't exactly in the best financial shape you know.

It pisses me off. They went backwards on a lot of shit. My PS3 is more of media machine than the PS4... that blows. The PS4 is such a multitasking beast that it would be perfect it at the very least had the media functionality. Can't even watch videos/view photos from a USB and there's lack of DLNA>..

You're correct. They have. They were ahead in a lot of ways. Now they are behind.

PS3 creators are not PS4 creators.

PS3 was literally a computer with a reskinned, shrunken down OS.
That's what all consoles are. And pretty much any electronic device that "computes". In the case of the PS4 (and Xbox One), they're built on the x86 architecture, meaning they're basically lightly customized PCs.

PS3 got FUTA'd by their USB stack (a buffer overflow allowed arbitrary execution of code, which led to all manner of unpleasant [for Sony] developments), so I imagine they're exceedingly cautious in that regard.

I assume at this point either the OS team is horribly incompetent or Sony is trying to push their subscription services in lieu of offering this

Wait so what is the PS4 then?

Pretty sure the PS4 is also this.

The PS4 is even more this, as it has a) an x86 chip and b) an OS based on FreeBSD.

I should have worded this better. I meant that the PS3 was much more flexible than the PS4 as long as you weren't pushing its hardware limits. You could install Linux free-of-charge on the machine for crying out loud.

This, basically...shame too...because for what was offered, even at $600 the PS3 was a steal..when you consider that stand alone Bluray players were selling for $1000 at the time...

But people bitched that it was too expensive...so we got the PS4...which is an awesome console...but quite a bit barebones when compared to the PS3...

Which was fixed and yet the devices still worked.

Sorry for the caps but THIS IS NO EXCUSE.

This is a money grab! I HATE money grabs.

Yeah. Its not like they cut all this out to sell us playstation brand hard drives, headsets or memory cards. Its more restrictive about the types of devices it'll handle but it'll take any standard brand.

The racing game fans are really upset about this. It is a fucking joke. There is no reason my G27 shouldn't work on PS4. If GT7 launches and doesn't support legacy Logitech wheels, it can go fuck itself. I will never touch a console racer again if PS4 paywalls all the existing wheels for some new licensed garbage.

Can't remember where, but it was stated somewhere here on GAF that games can custom code drivers for devices to use, albeit on a game to game basis. So if it doesn't, blame the devs.

Amar is the GAFer to go to on this front. From a dev or Sony standpoint, it is inexcusable no matter which way you cut it. It is a fucking USB FFB wheel, it should work on PS3,PS4 and PC without issue. I have actually been considering upgrading to a Fanatec wheel, but if it can't work on PC and PS4, there is no way I am buying it.

In what sense is the PS3 more of a "computer" than any other console? All video game consoles are by definition fully programmable computers, but if we go by the more common definition of a computer being a Windows box then I'm thoroughly confused. The PS3's hardware bears little to no resemblance to common desktop PCs, or any other computer out there.

Why do you need it?

I've owned a Ps3 since 2010 and I've never connected any USB device/cable other than the charging cable

Serious question? Fightstick, driving wheel, keyboard, usb mic/headset, and I am sure a lot more that other people can add on.

free voluntary work of course....

First! Someone local to us who is an amazing programmer volunteered to look at this because they thought it'd be fun, so they have been given a devkit. (o_O) Maybe I shouldn't, but I have high hopes.

Secondly, we wouldn't be able to use a port of - or any part of - any existing open-source driver or code that requires GPL or a similar license, because console APIs are proprietary code. After things like the Linksys WRT54G, anyone in any closed-source environment under NDA is super paranoid about any open-source license being near their work. Plus, even if we magically got permission to open-source just the driver, we'd like not to somehow accidentally provide extra information that hackers could creatively use to jailbreak a PS4, however unlikely that may be.
(Us licensing the finished product for free would mean "if you are an NDA'd Sony developer we can send you the code", not that any old person could ask for and get it and post it online.)

Yup. Step backwards. Hell, I can't even use a standard wireless bluetooth headset that worked just fine with the PS3 on the PS4.

The lack of proper wheel support sucks so much.

So many lacking features, all amplified by the lack of good communication.

To me its hard to believe how long its taking them to make some very basic things available for PS4, just amateurish.

How is Xbox in regard to those things? Hopefully it has then so Sony feels forced to provide them.

What hid are you talking about? i've used headsets with the controller, usb thumb drives for file transfers and keyboards in game without issue.

More proprietary and less open. Basically if your device isn't Xbox-branded there's a good likelihood it won't work, despite the fact that the XB1 OS is literally stripped down Windows 8...

Not much better unfortunately.

The Wheel/Arcade stick situation isn't any better over there.

To be fair, the reasons the PS4 is lacking in side-features compared to PS3 has nothing to do with hardware (which is the core of your point about price), but with a lack of effort into building or converting software.

Yeah I think this is it, I remember the jailbreak USB adapters. Seems like Sony just didn't want to repeat PSP and PS3 situation (as they got hacked) Vita got proprietary ports, cables and memory cards and PS4 got its USB ports locked. This is sucks for us gamers but really can't blame Sony since it's their business. just lets hope they make older Racing Wheels works on PS4.

OP, can I get more insight on this?

You are basically saying how PS4 has no HID/USB compatibility at all?

If true, then we can kiss many things goodbye.

I wonder what is the way for making T500RS working then. Emulation? Device-per-device authoring? If so, what is the authenticator? OS? Or some API?

This is getting more and more strange.

And more complicated.

USB/HID is still in there, but it's been pushed out a layer. From what I can tell, the HID stuff on the PS3 was recognized by Sony's controller API, so games automatically recognized anything Sony's library did.

On PS4, developers have to explicitly support HID devices, but it's possible to do so. War Thunder is a great example, as I was able to plug in an old Logitech 3D Pro into my PS4 and use it just fine (minus some calibration issues). I'm curious if anyone with a some fancy racing wheels have tried them in War Thunder.

I assume the touchpad has something to do with it

Atleast the controller
No. I used a Saitek PC gamepad as a Street Fighter Controller. It worked perfectly and was my preferred controller until the FightPad came out.

Edit: The above is nice to know. But as we all know developers are the laziest people on the planet when it comes to things that take 5 minutes. They can make entire worlds but don't want to make a controller work.

Excuse me, but that is both not true and rather insulting to the people that work ridiculous amounts of time to make games in grueling deadlines and they sacrifice a lot of their personal lives to do that. These things are also not 5 minutes things, but something that require both specialized programming and a lot of time to support a huge variety of devices and it doesn't benefit the majority of the user base. The wheel issue is a separate one because of various reasons (one being that even if you could make the drivers for you game to support one you most likely wouldn't be able to use FFB) and as Lab Zero have proven it's still not an easy task and it doesn't guarantee that it will work or pass Certification.
