Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Whatever the framerate is, I don't notice any judder/drops/screen tearing and this also counts for battles where there are like 50 orcs moving around with a lot of special effects etc. It's quite impressive actually.

Game is smooth as fuck.

People said it was around 60 at PAX so it's probably a pretty stable 60 based on your impressions.

I must be missing something with the reviews. It looks like a unabashed middle-earth version of Assassin's Creed?...

I've never seen something so blatant in my life. I'm sure it's competent, but jesus?

But Assassin's Creed's combat fucking sucks. And there's no Nemesis system. And this isn't made by Ubisoft.

so, does it unlock early somewhere in asia?
I don't know about other countries but the Japanese release is in December and it was recently delayed by another 2 weeks or so...
Everyone I know is getting the digital US version.

I'm not trying to be facetious, I'm just wondering why it got all the glowing reviews. I think I'm about finished up with Destiny so I'm an eyeing to pick up a new game.

Drive Club or this I guess?

General consensus seems to be the fun element.

I think one of the designers of this game came from the team at UBI that worked on the AC series.

Here is an interesting question to ponder. Polygon scored the game a 9.5 across the board. IF (purely hypothetical at this point) SoM is 30fps @ 720 does it get the score lowered? How about 30fps @ 900? Or conversely, what happens to the score if something unforeseen such as frame rate glitches occur on the PS4?

Full disclosure; I find it amusing because I find Polygon awful for most anything nowadays. Even the opinion pieces which used to be their one redeeming quality have really suffered imo as of late.

I love it that they may have put themselves in a pickle here. Chances are Polygon is gonna' Poly and not say a damn thing about it if the XB1 version is subpar.

I'm impressed as hell that the nemesis system delivers. I was skeptical but I've been wanting procedural relationships like this in games for a long time and it'll add a lot of depth to an open world title.

Someone posted a lore question over on gamefaqs and it got me wondering. Maybe Edmond or Loxely could chime in if they are still around. Where are the 9 at this time? This kind of seems like the thing that they would get all riled up over.

Remember when this game was just a cheap Assassin's Creed knockoff?

Shiiit, Assassin's Creed wishes it had this kind of fun gameplay.

Would someone care to explain the Nemesis system to me?

Might be the difference between me picking it up and not. The reason being, I'm a bit conflicted given the fact that the actual Assassin's Creed literally comes out a month later and I'm not sure I want to be over saturated in that style of game.

Seriously, read a review or two. I didn't know anything about this game until today, watched the IGN video review and had the Nemesis thing explained, and just preordered it.

basically summed up as orcs remember encounters with you, and you can choose which orc to go after and how to kill them and that changes the outcome

for example, if you go after a captain orc and try to kill his bodyguard and he gets away, he might remember later if you encounter him and he'll react uniquely. Or if you are killed the orc who killed you will remember and level up and be much harder to kill next time.

etc etc

The below video shows it off very well.

30 Minutes of good quality PS4 footage

They mess around with killing a few captains nothing spoilery. No story stuff.

Man this game looks fun as hell, I can't wait to play wednesday!!!

interesting. that bodes well for the PC port(if it isnt absurdly unoptimized). hyped for the launch :)

I think this post does a very good job at showing why the Nemesis system is so awesome:

Edit: You know what I'll just quote it because it deserves to be seen by more people:

Im honestly not sure. It runs very smooth though, and I've only experienced some minor slow down 2-3 times in 7 hours, all during wraith interrigations.

I just have to share this aswell.

After 10+ deaths against the same fucking enemy, I finally managed to kill him today. The fucker was immune to most of my attacks and always had a pack of orcs with him whenever I met him. I've met him several times since the start of the game and never managed to kill him.
I've honestly never held such a grudge against a video game character before. He has leveled from 5 to 20 and caused me so much problems.
I spent 3 hours this afternoon, killing off his captains and leveling up, just to be absolutely butchered when I gathered the courage to attack him again,

Then I interrogated an informer and learned that he fears Caragors (the bear/hound things) and that he's susceptible to stealth kills.
So I tamed a beast and let it loose inside his camp after tracking him there, watched as he fled, and followed him at a distance.
When he was alone on a cliff, I snuck up behind him and slit his throat.

God daaaaaaamn, it felt so good.
I love the nemisis system.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Best way I've seen it described is a growth system for the enemies. So you as a player aren't the only one who grows and levels up after combat, the enemy does too (assuming they survive)

Combine that with warring clans and the player being able to influence outcomes leaves for a lot of creative gameplay.

Alright, I'll watch the IGN review! Be back in a few.

IGN's review is actually pretty good. It also has a lot of cool footage of the combat as well. Showed this particular review to two of my friends, who knew nothing of the game, and they were instantly sold.

It a procedural system where you and the orcs develop relationships based on your encounters. You can exploit their rivalries and weaknesses in order to execute them and tear apart the structure of the orc army.

Also just wanted to say that he's not implying Bayonetta PS3 port levels of ass here lol (besides the framerate I guess).

He said it looks 'good enough' for sure on the XB1. It won't bother most people but for enthusiasts like many of us here, the somewhat subtle differences likely will.

Good enough. Well, when you put it like that, it doesn't seem as bad.

Damn. I think the writer came while expressing his satisfaction to killing that orc.

I'll have what he's having.

His whole job is to write about video games. If you can't muster some semblance of passion for your work, it would suck to have that job.
