I have no knowledge or attachment to LOTR, but I do enjoy game of thrones, skyrim etc. Does the LOTR lore matter here is it just killing orks?

As someone who's enjoyed fucking with AI and getting them to fight each other since the Doom days, this game's hitting the sweet spot for me.

What type of game is this? Action or action RPG? If you were to pick one other game that is most similar to this one, what would it be?

Combat is Batman: Arkham series
Traversal and open world is Assassin's Creed

It's an action/adventure game, the RPG stuff is very light and similar to those other games I just mentioned.

Is the Xbone locked at 30?

I'll take 900p and a locked 30 over 1080p and an unlocked 60, I hate fluctuations.

But if the 30 isn't rock solid I'll grab the PS4 version.

The PS4 version is 1080p and 30fps, maybe a little more I am not sure.

So I would go with this version, I guess.

Not really. Having watched the movies is knowledge enough to know when it takes place and the big names involved. There's also background info on locations, people, etc you can read about in game. But the enjoyment is like almost entirely on roaming around fucking with orcs and killing captains.

And why would I want them?
Damn this game is so much fun!! Got about 6 hours in so far! The nemesis system really is fucking awesome. Seeing orcs come at me after I already beat them once with new scars/wear and tear is one of the coolest things I've seen in a game in a long time. One Orc was like "my boys all call me "scar" now thanks to you!!" before our rematch. I chopped his fucking head off and actually said out loud "let's see you come back from that shit!!" Haha. So many cool moments like that.

Also seeing
Sauron in eleven form was so fucking great and unexpected. I'm sure some people will have an issue with it but I thought it was awesome and handled really well. The fact that the wraith you're playing is the forger of the rings of power and actually worked with sauron to create them is my favorite part of the story so far

Well, this game has officially changed from "meh, I will probably check it out once it hits a sale" to "I need to get this as soon as possible". PS4 version it is. Can't wait!

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I am by no means an amazing beat em up gamer, but I have died once in the past 6 hours.

I've taken out about 15 captains and higher, and I've never been pursued by anyone. I was looking forward to being hunted and what not given what I have read, but I haven't encountered anything like that.

That being said, I really like the game. It does Assasins Creed better than assassins creed.

Is there a difficulty option I'm missing?

This. I love games with subversive elements and even though I haven't really reached that part of the game yet, I love the nemesis system just in that running into the same orcs again is just fun. Love the interactions.

Wow, after about 5 hours with the game, I'm still thoroughly impressed with the nemesis system and the overall variety of missions. I love doing the challenges spread across the map, and getting more powerful feels like something I'm actively earning. Most importantly, just happening across captains in the wild, as well as stalking captains and fighting them after planning an attack. The game is simply great, I'll be picking up the season's pass if it keeps this pace.

Dude get off the damn internet and watch those 3 movies. Not because you need to watch it to enjoy this game, but you need to watch it for sake of living. I mean come on. Do yourself a favor and watch them with some amazing music system.

The Nemesis system is basically short wrestling storylines, complete with factions and backstabbing. Should've been titled Middle-Earth: Monday Night Raw Edition.

The orcs even cut promos on you.

Are you taking the "stealth" approach? Because I usually go in strongholds wraith arrows blazing and fighting 3 or 4 captains simultaneously stress inducing. The uruks know what they're doing aside from the fodder minions.

Big bad melee uruk who's immune to pretty much all combat attacks minus arrows tanking the front line against you and poison arrow using archer (Dung Collector I will get you o e of these days) makes the combat all worthwhile.

So if you think you're having an easy time, go charging in strongholds for the lulz.

Posted to other thread as well, in case there is anyone in this one:

For folks who want to decide between the ps4 and pc version. I captured a vid from the ps4 version at 1080p/60fps. Put it up on gamersyde.

My PS4 1080p 60fps video (a 3 min compilation from the first 90 minutes of gameplay, just showcasing the graphics, gameplay, framerate in a few situations).

Elgouken's first video (PC, maxed except for textures, 1080p, 60fps)

Elgouken's second video (PC, 1080p, 60fps)

While playing, definitely doesn't feel like I'm playing a 60fps game on the ps4, I honestly would've preferred a stable 30fps + some good motion blur on the ps4 version rather than this one that seems to be fluctuating at any given moment. inFAMOUS Second Son (unlocked), God Of War 3, felt a lot smoother to me.

Gameplay otherwise is fun so far.

did one or two story missions,

spent 3 hours or so after that just killing orcs and chiefs
used a dog thing to ohko some poor bow chief, was pretty awsm

Didnt see it asked on this page, but it may have been discussed... is anyone else having issues using their XB360 controller with the PC version? Specifically - doing ground and stunned executions? I'm hitting R2 + X while they are on the ground, doing Y + B while they are stunned, and it seems to work 20% of the time. Feels like Im doing it wrong, but of course, looking up the attack prompts in game and through the internet has oddly yielded no results.

Just checking....

So I didn't know you have to decapitate Captains for them to stay dead? That's awesome.

This one captain I have killed four times; first time with a sword through the eye, then I ran into him again and he had an eye patch of sorts. I interrogated him and killed him. I ran into him a second time, he had half his face burned. I interrogated him again and killed him. I ran into him a third time, his whole face was burned and commented about how I've ruined his face with my magic. I interrogated him and killed him a fourth time! I just ran into him again and got killed by him. I was laughing so hard! He had a sack on his head tied up with ropes because I had destroyed his face so much and he got in my face after he killed me and said:

Yo! Everyone playing the game and saying it's too easy, do yourself a favor and go into:

Options --> Game Settings --> Combat Prompts --> None or FX Only. Good luck.

Typically even in open world games I couldn't care less about the side quests/missions. But with the Nemesis system I haven't even bothered to do the main quest yet. I keep going after captains. Its a lot of fun.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Just started on PS4. Yeah, this is a 30fps game. 100% sure of that. I've barely seen any of the game, so maybe I've only been in the most demanding areas, (really doubt that) but it's been pegged at 30 so far.
Here's a really easy way to tell even if you're legally blind:
Right after you're assigned your first story mission stand on the edge of the cliff and face towards the distance-to-target text above your goal. (says ~760ft) Look at the marker while slowly rotating the camera left and right. See what's happening to the numbers when you do that? (double image) That's happening to everything to various degrees when the camera is moving in all 30fps games and to all moving objects even if the camera is still.

This is basically my 4-5 hours of playtime so far, but I decided to proceed with the story after running into a lot of stuff that I can't unlock yet. :p Even with how limited everything is at the start the Nemesis system is awesome. Can't wait until they all start using the new enemies/skills later.

Is DigitalFoundry the only people that do console game benchmarks? I don't put too much value in them. They do stupid shit quite often with benchmarks and comparisons. I wish someone like Anandtech did some.

yeah the whole "game being too easy" doesn't apply when you are overwhelmed by orcs and get hit a couple of times. With no regular health regen it means you need to book it

DF's numbers are good but they editorialize too much and misinterpret the reason for differences sometimes.

Also, turning off the ui that tells you when to counter increases the difficulty quite a bit. You have to actually look for when guys are attacking you rather than simply noticed the big neon signs above their heads.

I'm using XB1 controller on PC and seems to work fine

Still trying to seek out an answer to whether or not those challenge modes can be unlocked by playing the story, if anyone knows or as unlocked any themselves. Since they say the season pass gives you early access I was assuming this would be the case. If they are gated behind the season pass only then I'm gonna be pretty bummed seeing as how I like leaderboards.

Don't know what "challenge mode" constitutes but I already did a sword mission where I had to kill off 50 orcs in an arena and also try to get a 100 hit counter. I would've done the 100 hit counter if I had realized that doing the wraith stun and sword flurry is a great way to build up hits fast. Pretty similar to the Batman challenge maps of fighting many enemies.

Also on an unrelated note the dog wolf things are my besties now. It's great to control one and then see it fight alongside you. It's a sad day when they die though

I really adore this game's use of the DS4 speaker. That chime when your takedown/whateverhaveyou is ready is great - much more helpful than the sword apparently glowing red. And the rustling of bushes as you stealth through? SitonMy face.

I'm enjoying it so far (about 5 hours in). It's a bit "one-notey", but I can feel it opening up a bit.

In a nutshell? It does AssCreed better than AssCreed, but probably doesn't out-Arkham the Arkhams.

The Giant Bomb Quick Look just sold me on this game. Well, I was already planning on getting it eventually, but damn if that QL didn't make it look like a blast. I just dropped $90 on the Digital Giardian Edition of Destiny though, so I'm probably not gonna be playing this one for a month. Can't wait.
