Did they put the Mercedes GT on the Store yet? It was supposed to be up yesterday and the patch notes even mention it but it wasn't up. I assume it's because all of the problems with the servers but just trying to make sure. Supposed to be up for full game owners and I am.

It's up for free in the EU store.

Maanged to play yesterday for about 30 minutes, and I'm in love. All I wanted was a game to race, take in the sights and sounds, and nothing else. This is exactly what I got. Very happy with DC and really looking forward to all the content and DLC Evo has planned.

Xater, if you still have room in your club, I'll take an invite!

This is the only car I was able to download yesterday. You have to select from within the game.

Can you say how you got to it? Were the servers working when you downloaded it? I looked in the Garage and didn't see a listing for it. I may just be overlooking something but I don't think I did.

ok...well it's not up in the US that I can see. I saw a person with it in a Youtube video yesterday but they were European so that makes sense since it's up for you.

Played until the rookie cup and really enjoyed it. But now I'm going to wait until they sort this server nonsense out because I feel like I'm missing out on a decent part of the experience without it.

I think I went to a quick race (or whatever it's called) and just chose it in the car selection screen. The car does not have a lock, that's how you can quickly identify it. Game proceeded to download it. I was not connected to the server.

That middle photo tho....

Even with that compression I could give this picture to several friends and family and they would think it's a real photo.

So having played a couple of races now Gerstmann's review seems like crazy talk to me. How can anyone call the driving in this bad and not fun? The overall package is definitely lacking some features but the driving itself is great.

Just unlocked the Ariel Atom. Pretty crazy, but a bit too rear-end happy for me. Really want to try the Mono but need that club level. C'mon, servers!

A lot of people are using people's reactions to the penalty system as proof that they're casuals who hate racing or something, but I think they're glossing over the actual complaints.

From the sounds of it, the penalties are annoying people because they lower your in-game speed, and they crop up for seemingly innocuous arcade racing game antics like bumping and whatnot. I definitely think penalties should exist, but is a speed penalty really the way to go?

"Just drive better" isn't really an excuse either, in my opinion. Just like how old GT games were a little disappointing without damage modeling, a racing game that aggressively resets you onto the track when you mess up or zaps your speed seems a bit overbearing, similar to NFS The Run.

Am I right here, or are the penalties not actually that obnoxious in game?

As someone who doesn't play much racers, this game is awesome so far. However, one thing I'm horrible at is turning/drifting. Any tips?

Well first off, not sure if you noticed but pay attention to the colored flags on the sides of the road.

Green flag: Don't let up on the gas during the turn
Yellow flag: Let go of the gas a bit to slow down just a bit and gas through turn as needed
Red flag: You can still accelerate hard leading up the flags but you'll need to hit the brakes pretty hard or tap on them, then accelerate enough to make the turn and gas through as soon you you clear it.

Sliding through turns can be good if you don't want to decelerate going in to it but you won't be able to accelerate afterwards as quickly because it takes a bit for the tires to catch.

So far they really haven't been an issue at all for me. I got fucked once by the AI (Do a clean lap - AI bumps into me) but that had nothing to do with penalties. So far they seem quite fair to me, but I need to play more.

The penalties don't show up for bumps and touches, or getting slightly off track. They appear only for very major crashes (like say, going full speed on a corner and using another car as a guardrail) or cutting through very specific sections of the track.

I haven't found it overbearing at all so far, but keep in mind that I've only played for three or so hours.

A lot of the greens you have to let up on the gas. Some reds you don't even have to break for.

All depends on positioning and relative speed. The flags indicate the intensity of the corner, but doesn't take into account that you might be coming off a massive straight line or have just finished a previous red corner, for example.

Really enjoyed my time with the game last night. I typed up impressions this morning on my work desktop, alas our server is down and I can't post it at the moment. (And I'm not about to retype it on my phone, it was a bit of a novel)

havent worked for me yet and I have had the game for a day-US East coast

really shitty

edit:

Destiny

You can't compare the destiny budget to the Driveclub budget. It's in another league.

Sure, but is this game really that high-profile? Seems like a huge portion of potential players were waiting for the free version. The international release is staggered. They know exactly how many people pre-ordered the download version, and how many discs were being shipped out to stores. I can't imagine it was *that* hard to estimate server demand for launch. And this isn't like Battlefield where the # of people is in the millions.

The server wonkiness really just reinforces that those of us who bought the full version really just paid full price to be in a public beta. All those cool social features? Hopefully they'll be working soon. Replays? Soon-ish, probably. Weather? Also soon-ish.

It's a bummer because I think the game is pretty good. But all these issues make me not want to play it until it's working properly, and are probably scaring away lots of potential buyers. And since we're in the middle of High Release Season, by the time the wrinkles get sorted out everyone will have moved on to the next game. Since this game seems to need a relatively active social community to really shine, I don't think it's going to get a chance to get it's legs underneath it, so to speak. This game couldn't afford to bobble the launch.

I don't really know how it all works, but I would assume sony is budgeting tightly on servers to reduce cost. it would be costly to pay for all these servers and bandwidth just for the launch window.

Yeah, depends on what the track is like leading up to the turn. It's more informative on the sharpness of the turn as opposed to how you need to handle them. Sometimes there will be a red when you're already slow so you don't need to slow down any more or a green but you're going way too fast to make any kind of turn. You have to feel it out.

But that's a good starting point.

Their infrastructure is definitely lacking though. How are they planning to offer a working service when GTAV launches next month?

They must have taken it down or something because it's not there for me. There is no listing for it anywhere in the game.

I like the idea of the collision speed penalties, it promotes less aggro driving more finesse. But I think they may have gone just a tad overboard with how sensitive it is. I have gotten a collision penalty near the end of a race because the AI hit me and I fell back into 5th from 1st. Almost all of the time it works fine. I hope it is tweaked a bit in the future.

I like the penalties because I remember playing PGR2 and 3 online and that felt more like a destruction derby if you were not playing with friends.

Yup same here. I am just going to wait out so I can experience the game how it should.

So the space on the servers is already overfilled...even WITHOUT the million+ that will play the PS+ Edition? Uhh...that's pretty disconcerting and inexcusable.

Same here. I'm going to focus on time trials so I can learn the tracks and get my lines down. And my "getting my lines down" I mean cultivating the ability to keep my car on the track.

Yeah honestly, I don't get the complaints about the penalties. They are there to help you improve your driving. Getting a speed limiter can be annoying, but it's only going to happen if you really screwed up. Being upset that there's wiggle room and leniency on certain turns is also silly. It's a normal aspect of racing.

The only thing that bugs me with the penalties is that sometimes I'll get a minor fame deduction for vehicle contact when it feels like the AI is at fault, but who knows, in some cases a replay system could show that I was really the one responsible.

My feeling so far with playing the game offline and going through the tour is: it sure as hell feels like Project Windmill Racing - the pastoral countryside spin-off to PGR. I would guess this is no surprise seeing that key people from Bizarre are at Evolution now.

IMO it plays really fucking good, already one of my favorite feeling balances between sim and arcade. It doesn't quite feel like any one PGR game per se, it has its own tuning for sure. I agree with opinions that the track designs are extremely good for replayable arcade racing to continually shave time, and I also like the unpredictable and aggressive AI. It doesn't feel like I am competing with pace cars.

My biggest misgiving so far, is that I am kind of thinking it's going to feel light on content with 5 environments, all of which share a similar theme of being in the countryside outside of major cities. (Unless I missed a track variation that veers close to an urban location.) After sampling them, I already feel the need for at least two more locations to provide contrast.

But so far I definitely agree this is a kind of arcade racer we don't get anymore, especially not with these production values.

Bloodworth bro, you gotta turn that HUD off then you don't even notice any fame deductions :p

And car. Bear in mind that the flags are there regardless of car. Things you can do with a hatchback that you can't pull off at high speeds with a supercar.

I really hope they pull out some miracle and get the servers up and running by the time I get home from work at 5. I'm dying to play multiplayer already, can't deal with another day of work without it lol.
