Splatoon singleplayer campaign announced

The first thing I thought when I saw the announcement of Splatoon was that it needed a first person campaign that included platforming etc. This is a genius idea! So many possibilities with the ink mechanic, great opportunity for Nintendo.

man, this game!

I've already played it at gamescom and it was my game of the show. And now this trailer.
Just look at Iwata's face after the trailer when he's saying: "so, how did it look?" =D
He knows the answer, I'm sure.

Loved everything I saw and heard. I was expecting a single player mode, but nothing to this extent. I still see it being pretty short but still looks tons of fun and super creative.

Have to mention the really weird references they pulled into the trailer. I noticed at E3 the levels had Blooper ceramic mosaics placed on walls, a direct reference to both Mario and the graffiti artist Invader. The propaganda stills bring in a bunch more, including Adam and Eve, War of the Worlds, Octoroks from Zelda and this:

Quite strange but really cool.

That plaque comparison hints at the Inklings having reached our level of civilization, and the possibility that either they've been space-traveling or the octopi are aliens.

I see adult Inkling.

As if we needed any other reason to have Rule 34. :(
That proposition gets way more risky once you realize that it implies that males retain a squid form when they reach adulthood while female keep their more humanoid look. Nintendo's so weird.

That's what I gleaned from the trailer and from this little snippet (if its at all relevant to the story). It'd be sort of like de Blob's story.

This looks really great, I wish I could buy a gamepad-less Wii U at a really low price.
The gamepad adds an important feature to the MP game: " A map on the GamePad shows your progress and the whereabouts of your team-mates, while when playing as a squid you're able to leap to their side simply by pressing their icon on the touchscreen."

I wonder what role the gamepad screen will hold in single player.

It's pretty funny how many people seem to think the gamepad is keeping the WiiU from being sold at some ridiculously low price

Wish it was "mario sunshine 2", as Splatoon it will suffer the same fate as W101.
So everything that's not Mario will bomb? Come on now, I think it'll do really well if critically received well. I like that it looks different. Although there's certainly some parallels you can make between Mario Sunshine and Splatoon, but the characters and world don't look very "Mario" and I really like what I'm seeing. Making it Mario will either limit what they can do gameplay wise.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
This looks like the next AAA game from EAD following Mario Kart 8 (Captain Toad and NES Remix Pack don't quite cut it). If they can really flesh out that campaign mode, this game will be epic.

While we are at it, throw some more Amiibo mii suits into the multiplayer and we are gold.

Oooohh never thought about that! Hopefully that is the case. Splatoon could be their next million-seller property and judging by the response, it will most certainly be.

I pray Nintendo has a decent marketing campaign to support the title - I honestly believe this will be their May 2015 title.

Edit: Maybe not since Nintendo stated Second-Half of FY16?

TW101 was too convoluted for most people. Everyone had the opportunity of playing the demo before release which most likely turned off many people from buying the game.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Nintendo Directs always refer to calendar years, so Q2 of 2016 = April, May, June.

It didn't help that W101 demo was awful (not the game, of course, but the demo...tried once, deleted immediatly, that surely made possible buyers go "ugh").

Thanks! Always think about their Fiscal Year lol :p

So I think we can say late May release ala Mario Kart 8!

So excited

I honestly don't see how this could be a Mario game. Unless they made it Mario Paintball and removed the squid features. Or the squid feature was just one piece of equipment among many others.

But the entire game is built around the squid features. You can't just say, "It should have been Mario", and actually think the game as a whole would remain intact. It would turn into something different, and Splatoon as we know it wouldn't exist.

I'm sure whatever that alternate reality Mario game is would be good, but what we got looks just as good as anything EAD could have done, so let's just let it be what it is.

We have enough Mario games.

A new IP is always welcome, especially such a stylish one like Splatoon.

I've heard people say this before. It wasn't awful. In fact, it was actually better than when you play that level in the actual game because in the demo, you can block and dodge, while int he actual game you first need to buy those items.

W101's difficulty and learning curve was extremely overstated. And this is coming from someone who usually sucks at character action games.

nice, so I would think Nintendo would have Splatoon out before E3 this coming year much like Mario Kart 8

maybe they'll even have a tournament at E3 to build some more hype

I agree as well but this trailer and announcement of single player has piqued my interest.

Hopefully we'll get a SMS HD announcement sometime down the line though ;D

it just seems forced not to include mario characters in this game. instead we get bunch of generic characters in a mario style game.

now if they make a game resembling Assassin Creed/CoD/RE/FF/MGS, then no, mario characters don't fit. But splatoon? Perfect fit!

Wat. Do you know what the word forced means? And have you ever played a Mario game? Cause none of them look or play anything like Splatoon. The only Mario game this resembles at all is Sunshine and that's only cause of the paint.

What.

It would be forced if they DID force some Mario characters into this game!

Huh?
The ink lends itself to the design of the characters. They also turn into squids.

Do you want Mario to have a squid suit?

What?
