The Order: 1886 |OT| Gears of Yore

I wasn't high on this game at all since I thought it looked pretty bad from what I'd seen, but it sort of breaks my heart to see the level of gleeful schadenfreude spreading all over the internet. I mean these guys did spend a considerable amount of their lives trying to cobble this thing together. Can't imagine how it must feel to be trashed so hard. I think the best course of action for RAD is to pull a Drive Club and try their best to salvage things in the aftermath. Build the content that people were expecting and release it via DLC. It's not an ideal solution, but it'd allow them to save face.

I'm in this boat right now. I'm kind of disgusted that people are taking joy in the fact that the hard work of other people is being shit on and/or the fact that they didn't like it. It's just a click bait circus going on right now and RAD is the freak of the show that everyone wants to throw popcorn at.

I understand not liking it. I also understand enjoying it. I don't understand taking joy in the failure of others. For what it's worth I'm going to play it.

Genuine question, did Ryse receive as much hate, and flop-celebration as The Order is? I don't seem to remember and generally stayed out of that review thread.

Took me between 9 & 10 hours.

Jeebus! I was just going to finish my playthough but now I'm wondering about a 9-10 hour platinum, you damned enabler.

Just starting chapter 2. Story isn't really grasping me. It's the best looking game I've ever played and that's thousands. Gameplay it's spot on in gun control. So far I'm just enjoying it for a good solid game, gives out 7 out of 10 feel for me, not as bad as Ryse but still something missing, but it is early days. With all the negativity going in I'm pleasantly surprised, it's definitely not a turd.

But do we permit "professionals" to bully so they can have some twitter "street cred"? It's a free country, free speech--yes, but this is just shameful. And it will be lost in the media-storm and acknowledged by a few folks and continue.

I fail to see any bullying here. Call it unprofessional if you want, to be calling a game crappy over twitter, but it's not bullying.

Oh, man. These guys are embarrassing. Are these the journalists/reviewers we deserve? It's the main reason I don't care about reviews anymore. I've seen videos where these game journalists know very little about the console they play on or care very little. It's only a job, not everybody care about the job they do, neither are all professional.

I feel sorry for RAD. They must have worked their backs off for this. I'm going to get this eventually (when enough money accumulates on my PSN wallet and when I have the time to play it. I couldn't even finish TLoU)

I hope this game sells well and RAD's hard work is not put on shelves, and they can continue making games with their kick-ass engine.

So ... rush job?

Which is interesting if that's the case. Wonder what would be the cause of the rush?
5 years of development, right? How is that a rush job?

Maybe budget restrictions or time spent building the engine cut things back some. Nothing about it screams rush job, just disappointment at lack of full realization of the concept. There's many other reasons for why that is.

I fail to see any bullying here. Call it unprofessional if you want, to be calling a game crappy over twitter, but it's not bullying.
Okay then. It's unprofessional.

It's not like this was a cash grab game that nobody cared about. To openly mock it as such, when it's a sincere (though apparently deeply flawed) effort in a public and childish manner is unprofessional.

But no, not bullying.

It is not a reviewers job to worry about the people creating the game or their time/livelyhood.

Their first responsibility is to give their opinions to their reader on whether something is worth their money and time!

These comments are so insane.

Jesus Christ I went into the review thread. Has this game personally offended people? Looking at those tweets too you'd have thought it. People just love to be pricks.

I'm talking about the comments on the Internet from people and the "journalists" acting like they're tough guys about it. If a journalist has an opinion that the game is bad, that's fine. It's their job to say so. It's not their job to belittle people and act like assholes though. There's a line and people are crossing it. There is nothing insane about expecting human decency out of people.

I'm in chapter 4 and I'm liking the story. I'm with you on the gameplay and I really like how the guns feel. I'm obviously not done the game yet but the really low review scores are surprising me because I've enjoyed what I've played so far. I'm not blown away
outside of the visuals
but to me the game is solid at the least.

Pretty sure it didnt, but in same token MSFT exclusives are generally rated higher. They can deliver a turd and still get 8-9's

Can't wait to play this tomorrow.

So it appears the big complaint is length of the game.

Short or not, I don't mind, I bought many games that are "lengthy" that I never got close to finish.
What reviews are you reading where the big complaint is the length of the game? The big complaint has been the rote, boring, gameplay and unsatisfying story.

Something I also find disgusting that people not just simply not like the game but are enthralled by the game's critical underperformance.
Not even I am that sick.

Someone in the review thread mentioned that games like this bring out an ugly mix of platform fanboys and people who dislike certain styles of games that love it when something they don't like does poorly. It's really a shame since this bickering over platform and style preferences is ultimately pointless. Sales determine this stuff, not message board wars.

Mixed really, for me it's been the best single player experience of this generation so far and the first and only game to make me think next generation

I really liked the twist to the story

I will be buying the order as the game looks right up my street and people comparing it to gears of war CMS well that just seals the deal!

Hope this game sells well :)

Can we quit quoting that terrible twitter conversation? No need to give those people any more attention.

Jesus, really? Just give your critique and move on, don't sit around jerking off about it. Have an ounce of professionalism.

They aren't professionals though, they just write stuff about games. I expect nothing less from them.

You're right. 5 years isn't a rush but something happened to impact development. (I didn't realize it was 5 years...jesus. )

Of course it did, people were expecting the second coming of Christ. Also, people love controversies.

Do people just think that more legitimate complaints about uninspired combat and rote third person shooting shouldn't matter because the game is pretty?

I don't get all the complaints about the reviews. It seems pretty obvious that the game is not horrible but also nothing special outside of the visuals.

What does uninspired combat mean exactly? That it isn't innovative? Is that really such a cardinal sin? I'm playing through it now, and whilst the combat may not be the most innovative or fresh experience, it is still very solid, and ultimately fun. The gunplay is actually more competent than many popular shooters and third person shooters out there. Not saying it doesn't have it's flaws, but the extreme scathing nature of some of the complaints, along with the gleeful unprofessional circle jerking celebration of hate, just baffles me. I've come to the realisation that as far as my tastes are concerned, I simply do not see eye to eye with the majority of these so called professionals.

Unsurprisingly the majority of GAFer impressions are far more in line with my own thoughts on the game. In that sense, I'm glad the game leaked early to many, because we were fortunate enough to get a massive number of impressions from regular gamers, before the opinions of all the journalists.

Agreed wholly on Ryse.

Hey brother some of us are both:)

But agreed

Regarding Chapter 4 - minor spoilers

I really hated how we were unable to crouch and get behind cover when we were carrying that Lantern =/

I am about 4 Chapters in and played a decent amount of time, about 3 hours atleast. There have been plenty of cutscenes but I honestly don't mind them as much. I like exploring and examining everything, and as for the story, it hasn't really opened for me yet. So far, it feels like a solid 8 game for me.

to clarify: I dont buy my games based upon reviews, they are meaningless at most times, I got tricked into buying Halo MCC, ( mostly my kids nagging me to buy it for them )

IGN: With no multiplayer, and no reason to revisit the short and stunted single-player campaign once it’s been completed, there just isn’t a lot to it.

Eurogamer: There are no levelling weapons, no branching narrative decisions, no litany of unlockables - and there's absolutely no reason to return once it's all over.

Lot of people didnt like Heavy Rain either, I absolutely loved it as well.

It matters to them and that makes me feel bad because I sympathize with game developers who put a lot of effort to their games. I'll decide if the game is bad when I buy it. And I'm wishing that they can continue making games, I think that's not a bad wish.

Report me for trolling ND/TLoU2 threads
played the last 3 hours i love this game, is it short yep however the shootings mechanics to me are solid and the soft physics are impressive as well. Once i am done this game im still going to play it, it is because the shooting feels satisfying and is mature at the same time. This is deff a game im going to revisit over and over when i need a good third person shooter with great gunplay, as well as when i feel the need to kill shit until uncharted 4 comes out.

I think if they were willing to give David Cage another shot at making a game, Sony will be amenable to giving RAD another try with Order 2, assuming it at least breaks even.

I'm really hoping I enjoy the story through to the end of the game enough to want to play it again. I like having a few games around that I can go back through mainly for the story. I don't have a ton of gaming time so even something like Last of Us is a little daunting to get all the way through. One of the reasons I love the first Portal so much is that I can get through it in a single sitting and enjoy like I would a movie. Outside of The Order, I'm drowning in Dragon Age quests and I don't think I like that.

Cage's games have gotten profits, we don't know how big the investment was with The Order. But I'm hoping for the best.
