Lol, the $2 million isn't fully funding the game. It's there to gauge initial interest and demand. Sony are obviously co-funding this, hence the exclusivity. It's guaranteed they'll pitch in after interest is cemented.

It was a game that was more like an experience than a game. Playing Shenmue 1 on the Dreamcast was probably the closest I've ever been to visiting Japan. The story was also great and Shenmue 2 ended on a pretty weird cliffhanger.

Sony will invest afterwards if they see actual demand (people actually giving money).
10 million is the minimum budget for a project of this kind.

Remember what it was like when you saw Mario 64 the first time? How you can define pre-mario 64 3D gaming, and post-mario 64 3D gaming.

Shenmue was that for modern gaming. It was also the last hurrah for Yu Suzuki, Sega's Shigeru Miyamoto. Suzuki is the guy behind Space Harrier, Outrun, Afterburner, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, etc.

Imagine if Miyamoto suddenly stopped making games after Zelda; OOT. And imagine OOT ended on a cliffhanger. And the resolution got announced 15 years later with Miyamoto's glorious return.

As someone who always had interest in the series but never had the chance to play it, it's disappointing to see that no HD versions of 1&2 are even being considered.
