Batman: Arkham Knight - Review Thread

This game better have at least a 15 point metacritic drop for the PC version.

Warner needs to get the message that they can't keep getting these D-tier developers to shit out ports on the PC so they can save a couple bucks.

It's a goddamn travesty.

What are you talking about?

Edit: nvm,I saw it

What are you talking about?

The PC version is a steaming pile of shit for just about everyone. Even people with high end gpus are dropping below 30fps in areas. Not to mention the complete lack of graphics options.

It's a fucking mess and barely playable for tons of people.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
What are you talking about?

Have you read the PC performance thread?

You should stick your head in there to see. This may be one of the worst PC ports in years.

It can't maintain 30fps on even the highest end cards, and often drops into the 10s.

It currently has 900+ Steam reviews and only 30% of them are positive.

Man, the Batman Arkham PR team is going to wake up this morning and wonder what the heck happened on Steam overnight. There's over 1,000 reviews and almost 70% of which are negative.

I think the Arkham PR team knows EXACTLY why 70% of the Steam reviews are negative.

Maybe I'm just old and full of hate. I feel like it's a combination of the tank's combat being very shallow and the sheer amount of drones being thrown at you. It's just not Batman to me, at all, in those moments.

To begin with I felt the same, especially that it was so un-Batman. But I feel that the fun-factor being upped by a thousand in those sections really offsets just how un-Batman it is. Sure, it breaks what he's all about just a little bit, but it's such genuine fun to rampage through the streets, watching guys get zapped by the car's hull, to bean-bag guys into submission, to super-eject into a glide, to solve puzzles with the car's tether... All of it is so engaging for me.

Like, that really emergent moment when you see an explosive-gel-able wall way up in a building side and you're like "well how the fuck do I solve that," and then after looking around for a while you realise there's a nearby overpass the Batmobile can rest on... Just so well integrated from a gameplay point of view. I suppose the tank combat is the easiest part to hate. Maybe they did overdo it.

However, as someone pointed out in the OT, that first Riddler 'race' challenge is not good. The one where you have to do the track three times in different versions. I could see what they were going for, but Riddler's dialogue was flat-out bad and the car physics were a bit wonky.

Also I don't find the tank's combat that shallow. When an insane amount of drones are being thrown at you, you have to step up your strategies to survive and manage the crowd. Constant X-dodging, constant charging up your secondary weapons, mind-controlling the big ones onto your side when you're inundated, etc. It's a very crazy thing, and yes, not very Batman, but I enjoy it a lot.

Shit, this is terrible news. Absolutely terrible. Will look in that thread. I've been playing on PS4 in a news vacuum and I expected the game to be almost universally loved there, too. Such a tragedy.

@jeffgerstmann: Played a couple hours of Batman last night. I'm already tired of the driving and there are plenty of clunky Batmobile puzzles still to come.

@jeffgerstmann: The driving felt needless and half-baked when I played the game a year ago. Did no one raise a hand and say "hey, we should rethink this?"

I agree, but GiantBomb haven't released their review yet have they? I think that's why the Mods got the ban hammer out before for talking about it.
Ah alright, yeah I guess that's a good point, Quick Looks aren't reviews and they would be the first to admit so.
Not sure if they are even going to review AK though?

And why would I want them?
I think the batmobile is fucking awesome and adds a whole new dynamic to the game. Bummer that people hate it so much. I love driving it around Gotham honestly, it controls perfectly fine imo. Opinions

Watched the giant bomb quicklook.

Immediately spoils something that Rocksteady has clearly gone to great lengths to hide.

lol.

The batmobile is the least of my concerns. From what i saw in the Giant Bomb quicklook, the unbelievable narrative hoops that they're jumping through to have
the joker return as a vision for the bats
is signs of them having little confidence in regards to how they felt a batman game could work without a prominent appearance from said character. It screams narrative insecurity and laziness, really, given that there's plenty of characters to pull from it's a shame they went down that path with that particular character.

To be fair, that happens in the comics as well. The Joker will appear on the cover, show up in only two frames in the book and have nothing to do with the story just because they knowthey will sell more books that way.

Are people returning it? Seems like a good use of the feature.

Yeah. That is a big thing i was warning about throughout the weekend. Pretty much if you see anything past the first 2 hours of the game. MASSIVE SPOILERS

Hard or normal? Ive only played normal on the past ones. Really like the counter icon. Basically will hard make some of the tank battles too hard?

Always had bad feeling about the Batmobile, it looks like the game would have probably scored higher then the witcher 3, instead it looks like it would won't even hit a 90 on metracritic, thanks to the over use of the Batmobile.

The emphasis on using the batmobile is definitely egregious and tends to work against things as a whole but i understand why they did it.

Had they not, they would've gotten chewed out about how this game is just more of the same so i commend them for atleast trying to incorporate something new to flesh out the package and make it feel fresh.

I think the complaints would be far more muted if it controlled a bit better and didn't feel like the ground surfaces of gotham were made out of butter.

edit: sorry, I guess this was probably better for the OT than the review thread, forgot where I was

I played the game last night and I clicked on this thread purely to state my displeasure with the batmobile and how unfun it is. I see others are already busy pointing this out.

Driving around and shooting tanks, especially when it's this boring and repetitive in its implementation, just runs completely counter to what I want to do when I play a Batman game. It feels like they felt forced to add it just so it could be new. Being a good Batman game would have been enough.

On an unrelated note, even though I played through both other Rocksteady Batman games, I'm being reminded anew how much I don't like the magnetic button mashy combat. I like precision and control rather than choreography and context. I don't like being sucked across the room into enemies as it auto-moves me around.

I played the Harley Quinn mission. Seems odd that they came up with a whole set of animations and some special gadgets and moves just for a 15 minute mission that involves a few corridors and like 3 fights.

Not even Scarecrow manages to make me as excited for this game as I hoped I’d be. You want to experience true fear, though? Try running it on PC!

His complaints are not wrong. The more I play, the more I hate it. Wave after wave of tedious tank battles, charging the winch, car platforming, just ugh. Some of the stuff in this game is just horrid design and I can't believe it is being so praised.

The combat gameplay and its depth is second to none? Not to mention the main story is great - so far. "Open-world" these days automatically requires a bunch of nonsense like sidequest to make it rich in re-playability.... biggest complain is always how poor they're in the overwhelming majority of games. People praise the Witcher 3 to death for adding more dev time to them than others - simply put - a development emphasis. In Batman Arkham games the challenge rooms are more than enough of an offset for me. Hec I overwhelmingly prefer the time spent on them rather than on some side-quest for the game. Riddler trophies are ok once in a while if I am going for platinum. I can see the complaint but it's nothing new. The game gets overwhelming praise for what it does right, not so much for what it's mediocre at. Same could be said for the Witcher if we solely focus on its combat - but we do not.

Batmobile is good, but focusing on it way too much and the tank gameplay, not good, should have been used to get to point A to point B faster sometimes, instead of being the main focus of the game.

Ace Chemicals,
and wow is this game great. I've already had a few moments where my jaw literally dropped and I shouted "that's the sickest thing I've ever seen," and I feel like there are probably some more to come. The plot twist
where the Joker appeared
had me screaming at the TV. Awesome game. Awesome.

The combat in TW3 was not bad and the game on the whole did way more right than wrong. Here, there is horribly implemented batmobile sequences forced in around every corner and the side quests are mediocre. I am glad you are enjoying it, but I find it to be an average retread of what we have already played before, only weighed down with some abysmal new mechanics that you are forced to do.
