Her Story |OT| Type M for Murder

How come one of them has a tattoo and the other doesn't then?

You only see one of them with short sleeves. This reminds me of people outraged at seven for showing a decapitated head when you don't see the head at all just tell box, your brain just fills in the blanks :)

There was also the story from one of the vids, where the mom catches Eve out of the attic, and tells her to get dressed, then she goes in her room and apparently swaps with Hannah who was dressed, which amazes the mother. Though this can't really be verified because it's from her perspective.

Nothing from Eve's perspective when she's with Hannah happens that's point, it's classic split personality :) like she getting punched in the eye because Hannah was punched etc

This is a cool experience but it REALLY needs a better way to organise the clips. The "session" concept is totally pointless because of the number of videos the game has, and doing something as basic as putting everything in a chronological order becomes a herculean task. You should be able to do that automatically, or just view all the videos straight from the database.

Because of this, putting all the pieces together eventually became unmanageable and I lost the thread, dramatically lessening the impact of the actual ending. It's too bad, because this idea has a lot of potential, but it really needs a basic functional interface that makes it structurally satisfying to work with. As is, the fact that it's so bothersome to do any kind of organising (the tags are completely worthless) is a HUGE flaw to the point of being game-ruining, at least for me.

It's hard by design to get a answer on anything, since she is an unreliable narrator. Everything she remembers, is properly alternate to fit her story. It makes no sense, how they could keep the twin game a secret. At least the people in the school would have notice. Or the parents having a neighbor with the exact same looking child.

I still don't get the motive. Was Hannah shocked as Simon gave both Hannah and Eve the same mirror? Didn't got a clue, that Simon know from her mental illness. Was this is way of helping her, what just at the end backfires and have him get killed?

By the way the character's reflection on the screen is scary looking ...

Simon also wasn't wearing his glasses? I'm not sure if that's important, but I think he got confused which "twin" he was talking to, which is what caused her to snap. Might be a meaningless detail, but she draws attention to it

Little detail some might not have noticed.

On July 1st she went in wearing a long sleeve shirt, as she always did as I'm guessing to cover her tattoo. She ended up spilling coffee and my guess is they gave her another shirt to change into, which is why later in the day you see her wearing a short shirt with her tattoo exposed

He wasn't confused. Hannah realized he was having an affair with Eve and wore her blonde wig to pretend to be Eve and he ended up giving her the same birthday present he had given Hannah before, a mirror. The fact that they were both the same girl...the word ironic doesn't even begin to describe it.

I also agree there should be a better way to organize the clips, but it didn't ruin the experience for me.

But I thought he was giving her the mirror as a means of helping her realize she was the same person? Not that I don't think you're right, I probably have to sort through everything again.

I would have liked this game to be expanded to be like a Law and Order game where you actually get to interview her in real time while investigating in the field. Of course, this game is $5 and I got my money's worth out of it.

about the organizing clips, since in the database it is a grid and always the same order, you can tag the clips with X Y coordinates to help searching, whichever clip was last shown appears as a yellow square.

and
im still not sure either way about twins vs same person, i think im leaning towards twins still, but as far as multiple personalities theory, it could be that Simon did in fact give two mirrors, because he knew that she had issues with that & was maybe just trying to roll with it, since (one of them, dont remember) mentions she could see from Simon's face that "he knew.. though i think that line is maybe in context with simon loving the other one more... i dont know, my brain is fucked ATM"

one question i have is (big spoiler dont read unless finished)
whos reflection is that, what do you think, i kept thinking it was a guy (Simon) and it led me down more of a ghost/paranormal way of thinking, but then you find out that you're playing as Sarah...???

That was fucking great! I need more games like this in my life.

There is no question here
SB tells you Sarah is her daughter

Sarah, her daughter. The baby she kept talking about. Don't forget the tapes are from 95. This wasn't a police investigation at all, it was just a daughter wanting to find out why her mother did what she did

I also now think
that Eve is the mother. Which is also why Hannah was so upset.

You are not wrong in the sense that they are the same person :p They both say they are pregnant in the videos among other things.

Game's got me completely hooked. I started playing it on the iPhone, and it works fine enough on it, but the screen window is 4:3 - which is the perfect fit for the iPad. Sure enough, the game looks great on the iPad. It's like using a computer on a small CRT monitor. The keyboard is tiny bit immersion breaking, but not such a big deal. Love the sound of keyboard typing coming out of a game, it's a pure genius little touch. I think the game will be best played on a computer - real keyboard and all, but I'm waiting for my preorder to come through.

And yes, the game is incredibly intriguing, and throws you for a loop soon and often.

Oh, that X&Y coordinate tagging is a great idea that I wish I'd realized myself. I was mostly just putting notes in the tags and using the session storage to keep track of certain videos and recreate one of the interviews in sequence, but that got really tedious fast.

I got the achievement for 75% of the database but had to stop for the night; I'll get to 100% when I resume tomorrow. I enjoyed the hell out of it even if I feel like I might've played it slightly differently than most? The way I played was
seeking out as much as possible of the final interview specifically, because I hit the lie detector clip where she laughed about almost saying Hannah was her name fairly early on, and that along with some other lucky hits made me realize that there was a sister involved pretty fast, and I started caring about their backstory the most. In some ways that felt a little like I was spoiling myself, since it made the other interviews feel less important (especially as I wasn't really thinking through how they worked in full like I was with the final one), but it also felt like a totally legitimate way to piece things together (and I might not have gone back to some clips and realized their full implications had I seen them first). It was still really neat finding stuff like the duplicated/rehearsed clip because I can so easily imagine someone unexpectedly getting both in a search and having their minds blown. Oh, I also physically wrote down everything I was searching in a little notebook I had lying around, but that's just me being weird while trying not to forget what to search next. I have to admit it kinda helped me feel more immersed at some point, since I was jotting things down during every few clips.

Also, is it just me or
does the knocking in the clip where she mentioned the code have typos? I got "BYDHANNAN" from it and I assume it was "BYE HANNAH", but maybe I just miscounted/misgrouped some knocks?

Has anyone received their preorder yet? I don't mind waiting, but it makes no sense for preorders to arrive so late - the game has been out for a whole day. If anything, you'd expect people preordering would get rewarded with an early release.

Check your Humble account, I think? I thought they eventually released the keys sometime today.

Just started on iPhone. Might have to go back and restart the game to tag the clips in X&Y order. Is it worth playing the game to have every clip? Or should I just play as ignorantly as possible? Not trying to get any achievements.

Pretty brillant though. I'm really tempted to spoil myself and just look it up, but I'll stick with it for at least a couple of more hours.

Yeah that happened to me, too. WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Do you have to do anything beyond viewing the correct videos for the game to end? I feel like I have seen those reflections pop up a ton and im pretty sure I understand the major points of the case. I just wonder if I'm missing a mechanic or something to progress? Does that database pop up after you see the credits?

As soon as text chat prompt pops up you can finish the game. I believe it's around 50% of the videos

After you view the requisite clips you will see
an IM alert on your screen
that you can use to close things out. You can still continue after it appears though, so it's not like a point of no return.

As for the database, you mean the one that tracks how many videos you have watched? That's on the desktop and you can open it anytime.

I went right back in and saw both of these things immediately. Somehow my eyes weren't drawn to the IM bubble at all before, I have no idea when it popped up. And I could've sworn I tried moving the window earlier and it didn't work....heh.

another kind of dumb/cool thing you can do to help reach clips you haven't seen or forgot to tag, is search for BLANK (the default tag on all clips)
so if there are clips you watched but forgot to tag, you can filter them out that way, since they wont have the icon showing that they are new clips.

I like that the game lets you work around the computer program that way as a tedious exploit, I'm not sure if it was intended.

It's great to see this game released DRM-free! It really made it a no-brainer to buy it right away, otherwise, I might have waited for a sale or something.

Earlier today I was kind of bummed out. I was looking forward to this game and, while I was stuck at work, skimmed a couple of Steam user reviews. I should have known better, but I saw a pretty big spoiler and was totally kicking myself.

But then I started playing the game, and what happened was kind of funny. Without even trying, the thing that had been spoiled came up right away on my second search. But the funny thing about this game is that the more information is reveals, the less comfortable I am with asserting I know anything about what's going on. Now, I don't even know if the spoiler I read is even true. I've seen 100% of the clips and I am still puzzling things over.

It's a very interesting way of telling a story and well worth the $5 to check out, especially if you like checking out experimental approaches to fiction (less than the price of a trade paperback or journal anyway). It made me think about the possibilities - what would it be like to play something like this with several subjects, all with their own slants, biases and unreliable accounts? Maybe it would just be like trying to google the positions of political candidates or something, but if it were written the way this game is, it could be really awesome.

I checked it, it's not in my library. I also haven't received any emails saying that I got it.
I didn't get an email either, but it's listed under "purchases" and clicking on that listing took me to a redeeming page. It's kind of unintuitive for a store, but at least it worked.

OK, I figured it out. I had to go to my account/purchases, and there at the bottom was a link for an unclaimed purchase of this game. I'm downloading it now :)

*edit* lol - peckish, thanks for the reply. Amazingly enough, I figured it at the same time you were typing that.

Huh? you absolutely DO see two people. On 6/25 or 6/30, can't remember, you see Hannah with sleeves rolled up, no tattoo. On 7/1, you see Eve with sleeves rolled up (she spilled coffee towards the beginning of the day)- with that big tattoo. Unless Hannah got a tattoo between 6/30, and 7/1, the two-in-one thing makes no sense

I think they're doing what they've always done- switching in and out. Eve is 6/27,7/1,7/3. Hannah is (probably) 6/18, 6/25, 6/30, 7/2. Eve has morning sickness, generally less stuck up, and takes her coffee differently than Hannah. They're coordinating their stories and comparing notes, but there are times when they screw up.

It seems to me that they switch to tell the parts of the story they are more comfortable with (actually lived), but on items they're going to be grilled on multiple times (how they noticed simon was gone) they've memorized and answer word for word so as not to contradict one another.

My question is, did Eve kill Hannah's parents? It seems to be pretty strongly implied.

I really disagree.
Too many times they're in the same place at the same time. They went on all their dates together with Eve being the seducer, Hannah going on the date and then Eve sealing the deal. And a grown woman hiding in an attic while her sister is off playing at married life? It's too incongruous.

Also
I thought it was implied Hannah killed her parents because Eve says she was asleep at the time recovering from being sick. But then at the end it's implied Hannah is gone for good. So maybe Eve killed her and was secretly evil all along, but that would be even more ironic considering Hannah is the one who flipped out and killed Simon

Let's put a meta-layer above the tattoo argument. Where did the actress, who plays the characters, got the tattoo from? She clearly doesn't have one in real life, so it has to be a fake tattoo.

We now remove the meta-layer, this could still be a fake tattoo. Eve already explained, that she uses a blond wig to play guitar in public. There is a high possibility, that she also uses a fake tattoo to make her disguise more believable. A tattoo is normally something permanent or hard to remove. A perfect detail to throw someone off.

Warning for unclosed spoiler tag a couple of posts above.

Spent a couple of hours last night and I think I know everything important... But still need to wrap up the rest. Can't wait to get back to it.

Is there a guide to getting a tie game in the reversi thing? Last thing I need for 100%.

Yeah, I need that as well. I mean, I love Go but seriously fuck working out a Reversi tie myself.

Also, finally took the time to watch everything. Seriously cool game.
And Hannah and Eve are obviously the same person. Eve is a split personality. An unreliable narrator. The tattoo is probably a temporary tattoo, maybe even fresh actual tattoo, one she thinks she got while "locked away" all of these years, but one Hannah got to facilitate the reality of Eve's narrative.

It's neat because you can stumble on any number of major revelations early on, I know I did at least, but each answer raises a question, and each little detail reveals more of the bigger picture. It's about so much more than just the truth, it's also about context. The "ending" does a great job of giving you the proper frame for your journey through her story.

Ending spoiler:
What did everyone answer? I typed out yes and no each a couple times trying to decide which one I really felt. Hard to sum up my feelings. Eventually settled on yes. Super powerful moment.

I don't really get the point after playing 25 mins.

Is the objective to just type in the correct searches to watch all of the videos?!

Or am I supposed to do something with the sessions aspect?

The point is to watch enough videos to figure out what's going on - using the correct searches, yes. The end goal is to watch all the videos (again, using correct searches). The session video list is just to put your favourite videos there, it has no relation to successfully finishing the game.
