Gamescom: Microsoft press conference (August 4; Scalebound, Crackdown, QB, H5+ more)

Status

I'd say they'll announce Halo 5 bundle, FIFA bundle and Rise of The Tomb Raider bundle. And they frigging need to lower current prices for the 1TB sku in Europe, asking 449€ for it is madness.

It's 449? Wow. I saw the 1 TB PS4 for 399 yesterday. I thought the Xbox was the same.

I need a "playable right now" thing.

I've watched too many conferences recently where others get something new to play and Microsoft doesn't.

It's a thing now, jump in!

They're both around £350 with or without things from various places in the UK. A FIFA + Access bundle would do great here.

They are doing an Euro presser because they want to sell better in Europe, as Spencer explicitly said.

They should be concentrating on NA where they are very close with PS4. I highly doubt it would make a dent in Euro sales with this presser.

That makes no sense at all. Everything they are presenting at Gamescom will also come in the US.

Also, thinking that "Europe is lost" after 1 and a half year makes no sense at all.

Companies do not just want to "win" a territory, they may just want to sell better in it.

MS cannot afford to sit on their backsides, especially when it comes to Europe. Whilst it is pretty much dead in Germany, unlike Japan, these is still a decent chance to make some waves in Europe.

The UK market for instance, is absolutely vital and a strong Gamescom (and even E3) showing will help greatly in their efforts there.

Mate, at the end of the day it all boils down to showing off great games and MS had a good E3 and with Gamescom, they can really hammer home just how good their lineup is.

No longer is it just a dudebro console when you have the likes of Scalebound,Phantom Dust (hopefully!) Recore, Cuphead, Sea of Thieves etc gracing the console.

MS have to reiterate their gaming focus and the diversity of their lineup. Their 2015 lineup may look like more Halo and Forza but these two titles look EXTREMELY promising by their own lofty standards and next year, that diversity kicks in. E3 reinforced the immediate future this year and Gamescom instills confidence in 2016.

That's why Gamescom is absolutely crucial, regardless of which territory its being held at.

No one outside of UK/US gives a shit about xbox brand mate. They dislike the brand.

It was dead from the beginning , you know why PS3 caught up to xbox 360, after launching 1 year later?

How will Crackdown not be online only?

It's cloud powered. Anyone expecting it to be playable offline is delusional.

It's not known to what extent it is going to be though. There could be an offline fallback with lower detail destruction.

Don't get me wrong I'd love it to be online-only with ridiculous cloud-rendered destruction but I kinda can't see it happening. We will see.

That would require two engines and I can't see them doing that.

Sorry guys, I don't want to derail the thread.
We'll see post Gamescom if it makes any difference.

It's not something you can measure in the weeks following Gamescom.

Also, Microsoft have been to Gamescom quite a few times. Why wouldn't they?

lol

i guess i dont have a chance then lol

ms pls

Yeah, maybe you'll get in but at least for Italy, Xbox IT received very few invitations and left out most of the mid-tier websites like mine. You can try, but it's not like Sony's pressers from past Gamescom in terms of attendance ;)

It's not about just one conference either, they're going to do more than just Gamescom and call it a day in Europe. It's all about growing the user base not "winning" Europe.

Yeah my original post was mostly joking, but to be completely serious I am legitimately excited about the following (and they are not unrealistic):

1) Something from Twisted Pixel (crossing my fingers for Splosion Man 2 but in Lococyle concept art menu, they had a picture teasing their next game and it looks like a completely original IP, rather than anything related to Splosion Man)

2) More Quantum Break game play. I want to be wowed.

3) Find out the genre for Scalebound. Crossing my fingers that this could be an RPG (meaning that it's more like Okami and less like Bayonetta or Kamiya's other games).

On Amazon.es (Spain):

XB1 1TB basic sku (no games bundled) 441€ ( 449€ at the MS store)
PS4 1TB + GOW 3 remastered 396€.

No wonder why PS4 outsells the XB1 by a 9:1 ratio here.

If MS intends to keep the Xbox brand long term they have to regain some of the marketshare back in Euro and they have to start trying asap to hopefully get some momentum into next generation.

Looking forward to the Xbox conference. I wonder will Phil try to steal the thunder generated by Sony's E3 for the ages by announcing a megaton or two? Surely he's aware of the gigantic hype generated by the Playstation E3 show?

Cant wait to see crackdown! If they can get that looking atleast on par (better would be ideal) with Sunset overdrive with that crackdown gameplay, then we will be in for a treat!

Chuck in some QB and scalebound gameplay, is making the wait for gamescom long and painful.

Not sure why they are doing this at a Euro presser, the console is dead there. They should of showed the games at e3.

Maybe it's because, I dunno, they wanna do better in Europe...

That would require two engines and I can't see them doing that.

This kind of this is unprecedented, so there's no telling what they'd have to do to make the game work offline... Perhaps it wouldn't need two engines, but rather an engine that recognizes when it can't depend on cloud processes, and adjusts output accordingly...

Here is an updated hype list. I've removed item#18 as it is too unrealistic (after the last thread on parity clause I think MS is unfortunately completely oblivious to what makes the clause bad). And I added items 24 and 25.

Here is what I'm hoping for from gamescom:

1) Extended Quantum Break demo. Finally provide a solid release date.
2) Extended Scalebound demo - we finally find out what genre the game will fall under
3) Extended Crackdown demo. Confirm that the game is not online only.
4) Halo 5 delayed one month to add splitscreen co-op in campaign and multiplayer
5) Splosion Man 2 announced from Twisted Pixel
6) Rise Of The Tomb Raider confirmed to have zero multiplayer achievements
7) Marvel, Capcom, and Microsoft announce unprecedented partnership to revive Marvel vs Capcom 4. Cross-platform multiplayer between Steam and XB1.
8) Gabe Newell and Phil Spencer come out on stage and confirm another unprecedented partnership to revive Half Life 3, Portal 3, and Left 4 Dead 3.
9) Rare reveals that Sea Of Thieves is not a free-to-play MMO. Confirms without a doubt that it is a shared world game that can be played with co-op but its story can also be enjoyed alone.
10) One last patch to finally fix all of MCC's issues
11) Alan Wake 2 announced
12) Alan Wake 1 remastered including all DLC and American Nightmare
13) D4 Season 2 announced
14) Rare announces Conker's Bad Fur Day 2 and Banjo Kazooie 3 are in early concept stages
15) Microsoft announces that they found a new developer for Phantom Dust and have revived the "not cancelled but not in active development" game
16) Microsoft announces XB1 will start to get more Japanese games. We will stop missing out on games like Guilty Gear, Persona 5, Tales of Xilia, etc...
17) Microsoft announces it has completely patched up relations and un-burned all bridges with Super Giant Games and Team Meat. Super Meat Boy, Bastion, Binding Of Isaac, and Transistor all announced for XB1
18) MS completely abolishes parity clause and issues public apology to indie devs
19) Phil Fish and Phil Spencer come on stage to announce revival of Fez 2
20) All issues with 360 BC revealed to be fixed (multi-disc games confirmed to work, performance issues resolved, confirm all publishers are on-board)
21) Sunset Overdrive 2 and Titanfall 2 announced
22) Sequels to Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon announced
23) The Witness port announced for XB1
24) Right before the curtains close, Spencer says "and there's one more thing to show you". Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro come on stage to announce the revival of Silent Hills
25) Playable Teaser port downloadable from the XB1 storefront as soon as the conference is over.
Binding of Isaac is out this week by the way :p

The Xbox brand is very weak, this is their third console and it is still selling like shit.

Their market share hasn't changed much and I think the market share has even decreased.

They can try increase the market share by having. sales, black Friday style, then it might increase the sales slightly.

Xbox 360 sold very well in Europe, what are you talking about? They're doing bad now for obvious reasons, but Xbox has shown it can have good brand power in Europe.

IIRC, you can release already released games on Xbox, but only if there is additional content coming to this game. Binding of Isaac has the DLC Afterbirth coming, so that's probably why it got a release on Xbox One.

Yes it did well but it had an 18 month lead in Europe but in the space of a year the PS3 passed out the Xbox in most of Europe which was also still full price, only the UK remained in the lead.

Again with the hyperbole. Why do you feel that's necessary?

Sony sold in the vicinity of 35 million PS3s in Europe and Microsoft sold ~25 million. I'm no math-wiz, but that amounts to like 42% of the market for Microsoft.

I'm curious to hear your reasoning for the quoted post.

A bit too early for this. I'm expecting Twisted Pixel though they have been silent since like 2012 haha

IDK, Kalimba was worked on for most of the development by two-three people. I believe that the main team has been working on something else since Max.
Twisted Pixel yes, has been silent for much longer; maybe it's true that their next game is a bigger scope production.

The question is if it was brand power in case of 360 or the fact that it launched without any competition (and it was a very nice console if we ignore RROD). If the brand were strong enough lots of PS4 owners who had both HD twins last gen would also get the Xbox One, but they don't - at least not yet.

360 didn't sell the bulk of its sales in its first 18 months. You do realise a brand can still be stong even tho it isn't #1 right? 360 sold over 12m~ in Europe, that's minus the UK's 9m~ ....
