Mad Max: Review Thread.

Hmm.... This might be a case where review scores are going to vary wildly between one outlet and the next. We'll see what Gamespot gives it.

Edit: Okay, a 6. Hmmm.....

"Mad Max is a juxtaposition of exciting, thrilling fun set in a world of disgusting, primal depravity – like a singing telegram informing you of a death in the family, or an ice-cream cake with your terminal test results written in frosting. It’s a conflicting place of despair, a personal playground of explosive action and compulsive, unending progression that I can’t wait to get back to, and one hell of a ride. Mad Max is an engaging rampage through a brutal world of depravity and loss that urges you to probe every ugly corner."

Pack it up guys... the dream is dead.

We aren't going to Valhalla.

Just a reminder to posters that didn't saw the Until Dawn review thread, Polygon review whining is now a bannable offense!

It's an open world game, so we knew there was going to be repetition. I enjoyed Shadow of Mordor for the most part, despite it essentially being the exact same thing over and over and over.

Ya, but how many games like this can you play before you get as tired of it all as I am?

So 5 from Polygon, 6 from Gamespot, 7.5 from Gameinformer, 8.4 from IGN.....

God damn it I hate when there isn't a critical consensus and so I have to decide for myself whether to buy lol.

The Gamespot review at the end seems to penalize it for being a Batman combat/Ubisoft quest design style game. IGN, on the other hand seems to either like or not mind those those elements (combat good, quests repetitive). Take from that what you will.

Some of the complaints in these reviews read like they weren't that big of a deal to the critic playing at all. Scores don't reflect that, though. It reads like they loved it overall but the actual score tells a different story.

I expected scores to land around 6, 7 and 8. Regardless, I have seen more than enough to know that I'll have a great time with it.

I've found game reviews of the last two years to be highly inconsistent with my enjoyment. I'm going to play this regardless of some of the less positive reviews. As others have said, sometimes a game that is simple "ok" can be really enjoyable in the right mindset and for the right price (thanks GMG).

Hate lreview embargoes that last up to the game's release date... always smell fishy.

In my mind that's reason alone to wait for a price drop right there.

IGN gave Mordor a 9.3. Not the same reviewer, but I'm a believer in "Birds of a feather".

I'm not saying they're wrong, if anything, I'm commending them for their consistency.

Not reading any reviews, I just like seeing numbers. The numbers are telling me it's all out of whack and I shouldn't care. Can't wait for it to unlock!

Well.... I can stand them more than I can Dynasty Warriors. I can play maybe one musou game out of every five or so that get released. I admittedly loved Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, but that was more out of a love of Gundam than DW.

Sounds like a pretty decidedly average open world game. The car combat sounds interesting and I think I'd enjoy the setting but not sure I'll have time between all the other titles coming out this year, maybe in 2016 Max.

Game Informer 7.5

At the end of the day, Max overtook some bases, ran a couple hundred cars off the road, met some forgettable characters, and buried his fist into the sunburnt skin of the villainous locals. Was it worth the effort? That ultimately depends on how much fun you had in performing these basic, repetitious open-world activities.

It looks like GMG were selling it for the right price.

I'll probably get 15-20 hours of fun out of it until I get bored and move onto something else.

polygon marked the game down because of no female lead

Ugh Batman combat and Ubisoft type quest design, I can see why this is getting 6's and 7's.

Wow reviewers finally calling the batman / mordor combat "simple and easy to exploit"? Finally.

I think that is what some people like though. You either like those elements for what they are or you don't. For those that do, I think they occasionally just want to beat stuff up and do crazy stuff mindlessly without being stressed. Its not wrong, its just a particular play style. I like playing Dark Souls but sometimes I just want to chill and play Batman. I'm glad to have both styles to enjoy.

Still tempted at £13, I love the original film and found the new one to be lacking in many aspects but I am in a rather Mad Max kinda mood....

Impressions on GAF have been pretty positive. I'll go with that.

I've played a ton of the game already and I agree the game should fall around a 7 at best. If you still like the assassin creed formula/checklist for open world games you will be just fine with this game.

If it wasn't for MGSV out the same day I probably would've just bought the game. Especially since the PC version is cheap.

All these numbers and so little sense!

Always liked the look of it, looks a lot of fun. With the PC price it was a no brainer, looking forward to it unlocking.
