NeoGAF Games of the Year 2015 Awards

As an experiment while discussing with some people about the genre categories, I decided to see what it would look like if we grouped together Action-Adventure games (by definition action games which also have adventure and exploration elements in them, which is most 3D action games these days). I also decided to see what it would look like if we grouped all FPS and TPS games together, rather than splitting them. The results are interesting because they show far less gaps in-between, and a more consistent representation of game types.

Action Adventure:
1. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain = 1786 points, 35 honorable mentions
2. Batman: Arkham Knight = 531 points, 20 honorable mentions
3. Rise of the Tomb Raider = 326 points, 12 honorable mentions
4. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate = 302 points, 5 honorable mentions
5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D = 222 points, 18 honorable mentions
6. Yakuza 5 = 200 points, 7 honorable mentions
7. Assassin's Creed Syndicate = 171 points, 6 honorable mentions
8. Axiom Verge = 164 points, 17 honorable mentions
9. Transformers: Devastation = 129 points, 12 honorable mentions
10. Grand Theft Auto V = 127 points, 10 honorable mentions

3D Shooters (FPS/TPS):
1. Splatoon = 997 points, 23 honorable mentions
2. Destiny: The Taken King = 283 points, 11 honorable mentions
3. Star Wars Battlefront = 228 points, 21 honorable mentions
4. Halo 5: Guardians = 226 points, 9 honorable mentions
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops III = 125 points, 7 honorable mentions
6. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood = 103 points, 11 honorable mentions
7. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege = 92 points, 2 honorable mentions
8. Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide = 28 points, 2 honorable mentions
9. Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair = 23 points, 2 honorable mentions
10. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection = 13 points, 3 honorable mentions

Yeah this is better, makes a lot more sense.

Top 10 looks great except Fallout 4. Newness got that one on there. Had it not been freshly released, it wouldn't have been there. People are finally seeing that game is mediocre at best.

I figured Splatoon would have been higher also.

Finally figured it out!!!

First time ever done this but, those seem like some really high scores to me.

Massive congrats to Bloodborne, and the rest of amazing games of this year.

Great stuff this year, looks like I ended up with a pretty mainstream ballot with 7 games in the top 10. Thanks to Cheesemeister and timetokill for running this and extra thanks for including very easy to process parsed data! Here's some bonus material for those curious:

GAF Top 10 Affinity Winners (Algorithm is probably different from Cheesemeister's/timetokill's)

 I'm #4! Excellent, one step closer to becoming GAF itself.

Awesome... and well deserved for all games listed.

my only regret from 2015 is not getting rocket league on psn plus when it was available.

Great list, happy to see Splatoon up in the Top 10. Biggest surprise for me was Life is Strange at #5 and Undertale at #8, I would have expected those numbers to be reversed.

Big thanks to timetokill and Cheesemeister and everyone else who helped put the list together!

Shouldn't Rise of the Tomb Raider be considered in the Platform exclusive list for Xbox One? It wasn't released on any other platform in 2015.

I'm affinity isn't high with anyone, I played three games all year long... with mainly just CSGO. Props to those who voted for Titty The Game aka Huniepop!

This year. It's looking to be Deus Ex Mankind Divided being the only title I play on time... maybe if Dragon's Dogma goes down in price for PC, I'll replay it. Shame too since I'm interested in several others like Mirror's Edge, Nier, Ys VIII. Maybe I'll have a bit more time this summer since I'll be working in bumble fuck no where.

Don't know how i didn't end up having affinity with you, by reading mine seems like you should be in it and maybe top 3. Considering your good taste in women, judging by your avatar, #1 in my heart.

Recommendation list also looks solid. My top five recs are Undertale, Ori, Rocket League, Talos Principle, and Her Story. I bought Talos Principle yesterday based on stump and quin's recommendations, I plan to buy Undertale based on recs and some of the writeups of it, Ori's already been highly recommended to me by Aeana, and I'll probably get Her Story at some point too. So that seems pretty legit!

That's a phenomenal recommendation list!

Enjoy The Talos Principle, I just finished it and it was a masterful game. Only words of advice are to not worry about the stars early on and to most definitely play the DLC. You'll enjoy the internet forum in the DLC. The puzzles get turned up to 11 in that.

Glad MH4U made the list.

Bloodborne winning GAF's pick will live in infamy just like MGS4 winning. That said, it's my #1 pick as well.

nah, there's nothing controversial BB winning it. People that play the game understand it. The gameplay is second to none out of all the games in that list.

Has nothing to do with the game itself. BB wasn't everyone's cup of tea and was up against some other incredibly compelling titles, and I imagine some people (based on the number of votes) may not agree with the winner.

Happens every year though. Skyrim lost to Portal 2 in 2011, for example, and that game certainly isn't infamous.

Bloodborne's lore is outstanding.

It's Cthulu-ish, with a large dose of cosmic fuckery.

This. People really undersell the amount of symbolism and thought that went into creating Bloodborne's lore/story.

Every single item is named with a specific idea in mind and tracing the real world roots of Boss/Item names and tying it back with the item descriptions paints an incredible picture.

From a recent lore video I watched the dude was able to come to the conclusion that the essence of a certain Formless Great One is actually Mercury. He was able to do this by taking a look at Japanese history with Mercury poisoning, relating it to the Quicksilver bullets that we use in the game, and the runes that have to do with The Formless Great One Oeden. Really cool stuff From puts in their games for people to find.

EDIT: Here's the link for anyone interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjpcKIQyK5I

BB winning instead of Witcher 3 is certainly controversial for those who gave the nod to Witcher 3. Have you not participated in the numerous GotY threads in the past few months?

That said, I do agree it deserves #1. Just about finished with NG+2 (more than 150 hours into the game so far) and I am not in the least bit bored.

This doesn't make sense to me - Bloodborne fans are past the honeymoon phase, so you can't even really argue that they let hype blind them like MGS4 did to fans. If anything, The Witcher III, Fallout 4, and MGSV are going to receive a bigger blowback.

Excited to see Life is Strange up so high. I'm not happy to see Phantom Pain up there, because it's a fun piece of convoluted, nonsensical shit. :p

Bloodborne and Witcher 3 deserve top spote. My little exoerience with Bloodborne was fantastic, so those two i very support exactly where they are.

MG4 came out in June 12th. The honeymoon was over for that game too. And REALLY over when they held a second vote later and it won again.

I think BB will always be a very highly regarded game here.

Other than FO4, I disagree on the bolded. Witcher 3 is the new Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn in terms of setting a new standard for NPC quality, quest structure, and world building. MGS5 had a disappointing story, but the controls and cohesiveness are unmatched. Both games will age like fine wine.

The thing about From Software storytelling is that you can really come up with any conclusion you want about any aspect of it and FROM will never confirm or deny anything.

Exactly!

MGS4 won the GOTY twice, 4 years apart.

The vocal minority that constantly lambastes the game is persistent, lol

TW3 is my #2 and Bloodborne is not on my list. I don't give a shit if it won GAF GOTY. It's a popularity award and reading more into it is stupid.
Clearly what I meant by my post is that everyone who likes Witcher 3 will be angry and butt hurt that BB won instead. Thank you for clearing that up for the other participants in this thread.

Well you want to build some conspiratorial narrative around this so I want to comment on it that this is silly.

In general all this hypothetical PEOPLE WILL BE SO MAD, just you see shit is really really dumb.

That's not true, a lot of it is fact, it's just that it leaves quite a few things open to imagination as well, which is a good thing.
