Firewatch Review Thread

Mitch from IGN said the review from The Guardian is full of spoilers, so it might be best to avoid reading that.

Ars

The good

Stunning scenery that makes great use of natural light
Excellent writing and vocal performances between the two main characters
Finding comfort in mundanity of remote isolation
The building tension as a mysterious conspiracy unfolds around you
The bad

Main storyline doesn't come to a very satisfying conclusion
The game ends just as you are really settling in to its world
The Ugly

Frequent animation stuttering on the PS4 version
Verdict: Buy it if you want to take a relaxing trip to the great outdoors without ever leaving your home.

The Verge

Didn't read much of this one as it seemed like it was going to reveal some spoilers.

Firewatch is a rare and beautiful creation, that expands the possibilities for how a narrative game can be presented, without bombast or gimmick. It’s delicate, lovely, melancholy and wistful. And very, very funny. A masterful and entrancing experience.

I heard the game doesn't run well on PS4, anyone can share some more details?

I reviewed on PS4. Had some serious stutter when wandering the world--objects loading in would stop things for half a second, pretty frequently. Conversation triggers would also stutter the game. Also froze three different times on loading screens and had to close the game and reload.

Sounds like a patch should be in order. That souds like a combination of bugs and streaming issues.

Must say, game does have performance issues on the PS4.

Sounds like I am going to skip this until it gets fixed.

That's...disappointing. :/

Totally picking this up on PC. Should be a good compliment and change of pace from Xcom2 relentless and merciless gameplay.

My review seems to be at the very low end, but hopefully you find some value in the criticism - even if you don't agree.

Firewatch has the embers of a great narrative-driven game, but it fails to ever ignite into a furnace. Unforgivable performance issues detract from the otherwise outstanding art direction, but it's the abrupt story and unconvincing characters that really douse the hype here. Campo Santo's inaugural outing starts incredibly strongly, but your alarm bells will be ringing long before it burns out without ever really sparking into life.

Gonna hold fire until there's more reports on this. That sounds like more than slight issues.

Sucks but not surprised. Unity is always a bit of a mess for anything remotely complex. Ill be surprised if the PC version doesnt have its own issues as well.

I am interested in it but I will wait and see if they can fix it.

Ouch :(

Hope it can be fixed....might have to wait till I hear some of these have been worked on.

Unity Engine, performance was bound to be inconsistent. And this is after the game running at medium and high mixture on PS4.

Hope Unity either fixes this or indie developers move towards using Unreal Engine 4.

Push Square....

The problem is that the game, in its pre-release state at least, has some of the worst performance issues that we've seen on the PlayStation 4 to date. The framerate chugs like a teenager at a house party, stuttering to auto-save and plunging into the low teens as it streams in new environmental data. Granted, this is not a title that ever requires flawless controller response, but the constant juddering is still jarring regardless.

Sounds similar to SOMA.

I'd be in the dick
The performance issue comments are really killing my excitement for this game. One of my most anticipated of the year too :(

The stutter on PS4 might be dismissable if the majority of the game involved anything other than just walking and looking at things (thus drawing your focus elsewhere), the problem is when I'm staring at a tree line for several minutes and it stutters every ten seconds or so, it breaks the immersion really quickly.

Reviews make me want to pick this up day 1 but the performance issues are putting me off. Shame I can only play it on PS4 too. I'll likely pick this up in the next few days but hopefully there will be some sort of patch incoming.

Also, there is an amazing (at least to me) videogame related easter egg

Posting pic with spoiler tag if you want to know about it

That is awesome.

Looking forward to playing it tomorrow, I didn't need to wait for reviews to know I'll enjoy it.
I don't really mind those technical problems, it's not something that bothers me in any game. As long as the story is great (and it seems it is), I am in.

No plat = no buy
lol

But I do wonder if the game would've scored differently with more "distracting, extrinsic" trophies...
