Lionhead Studios and Press Play closed. Fable legends cancelled.

Wonder if they'll refocus Fable to what people seemed to be wanting? Canceling Legends is just....so harsh, since it felt so near to being done.

Well since the game is dead then the NDA is up so...

The visuals were really good - UE4 is a beauty at 1080/60 but unfortunately there was some hitching and shit like that because of the lack of exclusive fullscreen.
As for gameplay - mediocre, needless to say. The prettiest graphics in the world couldn't get me to log in on a regular basis (or god forbid spend my real money).
They actually pushed an update last week that added daily challenges, but alas...

Edit: I forgot to mention I also really liked the characters they were coming up with.

I think it's hugely disappointing. Fable Legends looked awesome, even if it was quite a bit different than the original Fable game. I'm still waiting on a game like the original Fable was supposed to be. The original Xbox was so great for (W)RPGs. XBOne won't be continuing that legacy, apparently.

But man some people in this thread are overreacting. It's not some death knell for XBO or MS.

Isn't Sea of Thieves an online only f2p multiplayer game? Just like Fable Legends?

well... at least rare made profitable kinect games and avatars, hopefully sea of thieves does well for them
Stunning news. Is this part of a bigger picture?
chadskin's op had the title
Development of Fable Legends ceased, more changes at Xbox Europe
though reading the xbox page I don't see anything suggesting more changes of such kind (closure/restructuring of studios)

Sad news and unexpected as it looked like Legends would atleast be released soon.

Guess I'll check out my copy of Anniversary soon.

They only really exist for their name as is. When Sea of Thieves predictably doesn't live up to the Rare legacy (particularly due to taking part in a genre outside of the studios' experience) I'd expect a closure of the studio not long after.

Would not shock anyone, tbqh. They are arguably one of the highest visibility studios in the world and dubiously one of the few studios whose drop in quality of work can be measured and objectively agreed upon. They have yet to remind anyone why they were worth buying and after being relegated to Kinect junkware, I'm surprised they're still around. Maybe their brand name really is enough to keep them open. I suppose closing them would be the ultimate statement of Microsoft's failure.

This is an absolute disgrace. I loved every main series Fable game despite Peter Molyneux's silliness. They were charming, extremely British and funny games that were enjoyable to play (even though the sequels did lack in overall quality a bit).

Did this come as a surprise to the team? :/

This tweet could have come from external marketing and waaaay down the chain.

No clue on Knoxville but I was playing Fable Legends every couple of days and really liked it. Seemed odd that they never pushed it live after a ton of updates, maybe should have seen the writing on the wall from that.

Holy crap, that Fable Legends game must have been really bad, when they figured out that they cannot give it away for free.
What a debacle that IP has become, a huge downfall from a brilliant Fable 2.

Disgraceful waste of talent really. Fable was not a universe I cared enough to try. But you can bet I would have been interested in any new IP from Lionhead.

On the plus side maybe we'll get some new grass roots studios like Media Molecule and Hello Games.

What have been the last few games Lionhead of released? The last one I saw was the Fable on the rails game that looked like shit.

WTF? Is this legit? I've been in the closed beta for a months now and it's honestly been the only game I've been regularly playing since I kicked the Destiny habit (temporarily). I've been enjoying it a lot. Hell, they just pushed a decent sized update not more than a week or two ago. This blows.

Well, MS is makkng trmselves feel like all they care is about FPS now. Fable Legends would've been mixed sales, but thats no reason of closing Lionhead Studios. Guess MS got tired waiting on Peter Molyneaux to mKe another hit. Now watch MS attempt to buy another RPG studio to fill in that genre gap.

black and white wasn't an incredible game but god if i don't remember it as one of the most magical gaming experiences of my life. everything about it was pure class, right from that lionhead logo that appeared out of all of the little points of light.

Same, to this day is has an endearing quality to it that keeps it playable, a combination of art style, humour and jank folded into a molyneux bundle. We shall never see it's like again.

Btw - title is misleading. Lionhead is not closed just yet. They are still discussing this.

Well that's...

Something...

Fucking hell though, Legends was shaping up really well :/

Why cancel it now, of all times? At least get the thing out the door, it seemed like it was pretty close.

This is sad, but I guess I can understand not releasing the game even if it's almost finished since it will be F2P, you can't have a F2P game without an studio doing constant updates.

That Tweet...the higher ups must have known too. Man, that's real unfortunate. Gaming industry though, right guys!? hah...ha...ha...:(

Fuck...

The original Fable was the sole reason I got into the Xbox as a console. It was a franchise that had so much more potential. Legends wasn't the direction I wanted, but I held out hope they would have returned to a proper Fable entry.

Sucks to hear about the studio, but Fable Legends is one of the few games I uninstalled after a couple hours of playing. It was so unbelievably boring and the combat seemed like a joke. You just spammed the A button wave after wave of the same enemies over and over and over again. And that was it.

Microsoft have been so headless this gen. Bizarre decisions left, right, center and you can tell there isn't much thought process going into these decisions besides poor sales figures.

Was Fable Legends really looking that bad that they couldn't see it through to completion after all this time? It would have given the XB1 another console exclusive title, and an rpg at that, a gamer demographic they have not catered to very well this generation.

It's so, so sad.
Fable Legends wasn't really an RPG. It was more of a multiplayer action game.

There's a reason why so many people wanted LH to announce Fable IV.

Man Im sad about Lionhead, while I havent enjoyed their output for a while some of their earlier stuff was more charming than it should be. This should be big news knowing their pedigree/history...

Guess MS are looking to streamline anything gaming while they decide where they are going with that...

Molyneux hasn't been with Lionhead for a few years now.

Also there's more on MS's lineup then shooters and cars, Sea of Thieves is also a product they are making.

Isn't the IP Co-Owned by MS/Topps like Shadowrun is?

Video game rights are owned by Microsoft and are currently licensing them out to Piranha Games Interactive for Mechwarrior: Online.

Book rights are owned by Roc Publishing.

Physical model rights mostly lie with Iron Wind Metals.

Overall lore, tabletop game, and most everything else are property of Topps Games (which acquired WizKids in 2003) and they license most of it to Catalyst Games Labs, who produce BattleTech and BattleTech:AlphaStrike.

no - its a legal formality in the UK. They'll still close it. Slightly better than the US market where you can literally get your marching orders the same day, but in the end its just one extra months salary.

I mean I assume the most costly development time is the final months so maybe what they had already done + projected > what they thought they could make with their marketing budget,

Does suggest MS is trying to reduce the costs in the Xbox business. To me this is a mistake when Nintendo is going to be coming back into the gen again plus when it comes to Xbox Two, their going to be a studio down (further worsening their post 360 positions. Not that Fable was likely to do much but still has an impact.

With the money swarming around some sections of PC now and its increasing importance of gaming to consumer PC retail, I wonder if MS is going to look to get behind that more?

Wow, I was not expecting this. Losing a studio is never good news and the project did look interesting and it seemed it was coming along really well.

Hopefully everyone that worked there lands on their feet.
