When do we normally find out about Nintendo's E3 plans, was it in May last year we got told?

Depends. Sometimes we hear by the end of April, sometimes early May.

Two recent examples being the Mega 64 videos for Nintendo. 2014 was April 29th, and their 2015 video was May 13th.

Yep. Was heavily rumoured as StarCube in the build up. Allegedly Yamauchi loved the name but everyone else convinced him it was terrible (especially for Western markets) so it was changed.

It was never officially confirmed as StarCube at any point, however.

Dolphin was just the internal codename for the project. Much like Cafe for WiiU or Revolution for Wii. StarCube was being considered as the actual product name until fairly late in the process.

Both are true. It was indeed only ever officially referred to by its codename of Dolphin--hell, one of its chips is named based on it.

But one of the heavily rumored final names for the console at the time was StarCube. Nintendo even had registered trademarks for it

Ah, that makes a lot of sense.

A detail I love about Nintendo hardware is that many of the pieces of hardware (ie accessories) have product names referring back to the codename. Stuff like NTR for the DS/Nitro, DOL for the GC/Dolphin, RVL for the Wii/Revolution, etc.

More here.

I just can't believe it has nearly been a year already since THAT E3 presentation. Where does the time go?

I remember sitting there so excitedly thinking to myself, 'at last! We might get to see the new Mario, some new Zelda footage, maybe the new Retro game, a new Animal Crossing, a new Metroid"

And then.. Yeah, it happened.

Some of us were pretty comfortable and settled with what we'de get at that e3 before the presentation. It was a stopgap year and pretty obviously so - we knew we wouldn't get NX news, but we also knew that the NX would be presented in 2016 and so clearly most of the internal resources at Nintendo would be dedicated to it. So anyone hoping for big stuff at E3 were willingly setting themselves up for disappointment.

Since I'm bored, here's a guess of what they will do at E3 this year:

Late May/Early June: The Wii U/3DS Pre-E3 Direct. At this point Nintendo has already announced some details about the new system and we know E3 is going to be all about that. So this Direct is to give spotlight to some of the upcoming games left for the old systems, including Paper Mario, Pokémon Sun and Moon, Monster Hunter Generations and Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE.

June 12: Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, live at the Dolby Theatre. 1+ hour of Zelda music goodness to celebrate 30 years of Zelda. Features some new music and footage from the upcoming game. The timing is perfect, since they are actually already scheduled for a concert the day after at the Dolby Theatre. Coincidence? I think not.

June 14: The Nintendo Digital Event. As mentioned I believe a lot about the hardware and concept will be known before E3, and they will not have a stage show. The Nintendo Digital Event will focus solely on new games for NX and how its new features can be incorporated into gameplay.

During the course of the show more about the nitty-gritty of the hardware, the OS and other stuff through stuff like Treehouse Live and closed press events. Also playable NX at Nintendo NY and select retail stores in the US.

Will they reveal their E3 plans with Mega64 again? I hope so I want to see Reggie Fils A Mech!

Also, does anybody else go back and watch previous E3 conferences when E3 is coming? I like to watch the Big 3s previous conferences/digital event.

Nah, I'd made my peace with the facts that the Wii U was on its way out and that Nintendo's internal teams weren't in a position to be pumping out a range of heavy hitters long before that E3.

Admittedly I wasn't expecting it to be quite so dispiriting, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to be good.

I really can't wait for E3 this year. I would say at a realisticish guess, surely we can expect these to be shown;

Zelda U/NX
Paper Mario
Pokemon Sun/Moon
Pikmin 4
New Retro game
New 3d Mario
Possibly Luigi's Mansion 3
Maybe Beyond Good and Evil 2

I mean, that's actually a god like line up, so much so I'll probably have to cut it in two to be realistic.

One of the articles, this one from 2014 April.

Wonder if they already planned it foe the NX. If so, did they already know the power the nx console?

There are allot of other articles confirming that other mario is in the make.

Mostly hinted to mario galaxy 3.

There was one article after previous e3 that they are working on more mario games. One 2d and two 3d versions if I did remember it richt. Ofcourse paper mario could be one of them.

Well if Paper Mario is one of them the other one could've been Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam which already came out... Although I doubt it could be Galaxy 3 either way, perhaps something in the vein of the Galaxy games but not Galaxy 3.

The incredible thing about last years E3 was that we actually did get: A new Zelda, A new Metroid, a new Star Fox, a new Animal Crossing, a new Mario RPG and a new Mario sports title.

But if course, the reality was nowhere near as exciting. At least the Mario RPG and Zelda turned out fine, as will the new Star Fox hopefully.

I was so expecting E3 last year to be mediocre at best. With all the news about NX, no Zelda and looking at Nintendo's schedule I knew full well we'd get a transitional year.

What? Oh, that.
How can such a line-up be so disappointing? Nintendo overdid themselves there.

At least this year can't be worse.

I am doing it right now, altough I'm only wathing Nintendo-stuff. I'm watching Treehouse Streams too, so I'll have much to see again. This was also my first time I have watched Smash Bros. Invitational. I''ll also watch all the 2015 stuff after this, so yeah. Hopefully we'll get plans from Nintendo soon, I still want treehouse streams for 3 days.

It's incredible isn't it? If I put such a list down and said: this is gonna be at E3, everyone would be relatively excited.

But there you are.

I don't know if nx info is supposed to come in time with the meeting, but wait for e3 is precisely what won't happen according to Orgen.

I wonder if Luigi's Mansion 3 could look like this:

That look is the kind of games i want. Not the realistic ones.

I remember the wiiu zelda tech demo, but I think nx could even put much better gfx with vulcano than the tech demo did.

Just don't ruin what makes Splatoon what it is Nintendo. Splatoon is your FUTURE!

EDIT: I don't think this is my idea but Splatoon 2: Splatopia as an open-world game for campaign could be super sick, lots of potential. Just make sure it has good competitive multiplayer in similar style to the first.

Crossing my fingers it doesn't have a ridiculous name.

Although, when I heard Xbox and 360 the first time I found it extremely stupid, but it eventually grew on me. And yeah, I know most system names sound stupid if you really analyze them, but there are some names that just don't entice ridicule like NES, Playstation, DS, and the such.

So yeah, hopefully it doesn't have a mockable name.

Personally I would love them to go back to NES/SNES style naming. It would be great if it was called like Nintendo Entertainment eXperience or NEX.

Kimishima will be like "no NX information will be adressed this meeting".

Unless it's launching in Holiday 2017, they have to give a forecast (and if they don't... well, Team 2017 was right all along) and will likely at least confirm if it's a console or not.

They need to at least give a name, say what it is, and allow third-parties to make announcements. CoD being announced without a Nintendo logo yet again is going to hurt.

Huh, TIL that the New 3DS codename is the German word for "control".

I agree. NEX would be awesome, although the X wouldn't make much sense. eXperience would be a stretch.

Edit: I also like XNES a lot.
