Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Review Thread

The reviews seem pretty much about what I expected after playing the beta, especially considering how the original reviewed.

If you loved the original Mirror’s Edge, you will likely love Catalyst as well.
Yep, after playing the beta that was my feeling. Even if it doesn't end up being one of the best games of this generation (like the original Mirror's Edge was for the previous gen) it will still be a lot of fun, even if just for the awesome parkour gameplay.

Still Day 1 (like it's been for the past 8 years)

Only reason I'm disappointed by the reviews is it means more people might not give it a chance, unless EA makes a major marketing push.

Worth noting the original's metacritic score was only 78-79% and it was close to my Game of Gen 7, so I'm honestly not worried about the scores. I love their movement system, and I can't imagine the combat being any worse than the first game :b

EDIT: ^Beaten like a rented mule

Yeah loved the first one myself

My main gripe here is not open world but the reports of texture pop in, muddy textures which I noticed in the beta. The first game was absolutely gorgeous so to see complaints about the visuals here is disappointing considering how lovely the art style is.

The open world sounds like the best thing here.

But even then its extraneous and filled with collectibles to net you XP for another extraneous progression system.

Funny thing about the progression system is the reviews I've read make it sound like you unlock everything you need in a hour

Like they just needed to hit every box on the western AAA check list to make sure this game was a success.

People hated on Thief being too AAA and streamlined and whatnot, and as a fan since Thief 1 I still loved it. I'm sure Mirrors Edge will be no different, at least for me.

So people are going apeshit over the 7's it's getting? Dat metacritic scale huh?

So it won't be GOTY but it'll probably still be a good game if you like that sort of thing (I don't, myself, but come on guys, some of those reactions are laughable).

The horror!

It's pretty ridiculous. Bet the same people complain about the 7-10 "scale".

I've enjoyed what I've played of this.

Got it pre-loaded at home, waiting for it to unlock.

Not surprised by the reviews, though.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
Hmm looks like very mixed, scores all over the place. Looks like a disappointment, not surprised I don't trust a factory like EA to get what would make Mirrors edge great.

Quality 12-year-old posting right here.

EA only published, DICE put in good work and polished up what made ME1 novel.

We got exactly what we asked for.

Mixed opinions are just that, opinions.

A stack of accolades means very little to a niche game.

Seems to be reviewing a lot better than I was expecting based on some of the negative impressions in the Early Access thread.

Eh I really enjoyed the Beta, and my copy just shipped. I'm not surprised by the scores at all and I'm still really looking forward to it.

Anyone mocking the people "going apeshit" over the scores (which no one is, but whatever) should think about why some people are having the reaction they are.

It seems that the disappointment here is that many reviews and scores seem to indicate the game is either similar in quality, or worse to its predecessor.

A shame really, this series has so much fucking potential. Still a fresh concept even nowadays, even indies aren't making loads of games in this style, let alone the AAA space where there's nothing else like it.

This is actually pretty good, better than I feared it would be even though I've loved it so far in the beta and trial.

It really reeks of EA executive meddling if we are being completely honest. As you said, they went down the AAA checklist and added a whole bunch of shit that doesn't necessarily improve or fit within the Mirrors Edge game framework (in some cases actually diluting the experience).

When they really should have just doubled down on the existing game and improved on the things that needed to be improved.

Doesn't seem too bad, but my Heart is with Iron this month followed by me living in a House of a Dying Sun. So it will have to wait a while.

Reviews look to be about what I expected. The first game received decent reviews but was ultimately a fairly niche game as far the AAA space goes. The main changes from the first to the second didn't seem like anything that would expand the audience or improve review scores, so fairly mixed reception was what I saw coming.

I'll pick it up soon once I look into a few specific things I needed answered after my beta experience.

Reviews seem good to me. But, once again the "open world" trend is hurting another game. Now just gotta wait on digital foundry and see how it compares on consoles.

I agree - I've said in threads previously that i don't agree with the decision to prioritize 60fps at the cost of cleanliness of the visuals compared to 1080p with razor sharp IQ and buttersmooth 30fps. And despite those who telling me that I'm "playing it wrong," I stand by that.

Having said that, I need to play the game before I decide. And i loved the first one so much there was never a world in which I was not going to support DICE for developing this, or EA for publishing.

Nothing buttersmooth about 30 fps tho.

It can be though, as you see (or feel, rather) in Destiny, DriveClub, and others.

I think 30fps would have been a better target here, considering the open world and how visually striking the first game was.

Still might bite the bullet on this one, but its a damn shame to see the design-by-numbers ideas at work here. Maybe they just didn't manage to realize their ambitions in the time frame and budget they had to work with (like say, the enemy AI and combat flow among others), and we ended up with XP systems to try and pad things out?

Expected reviews. That Giantbomb quicklook made it fucking terrible. It's fallen out of my gamefly queue entirely now, which was already a pretty low bar.

30fps destroys any sort of "razorsharp"IQ as it turns the entire screen into a blurry mess as soon as anything is moving. They probably could've hidden a lot of stuff that way but that's not what IQ is about.

While I can see you not liking this, I always have to say that Giantbomb quicklooks are a poor way to judge any game that requires any significant amount of player input.

I can't see this selling enough to justify another Mirror's Edge game after, so it's sad to see that AAA open-world feature bloat has gotten in the way of the game's strengths. I really wish DICE had been able to develop this as a smaller digital title instead.

I would have preferred they kept it 60 fps, but instead limited the scope of the world... as I really did not feel like the open-worldness enhanced the experience from what I played of it.

Then again, I hated Burnout Paradise and loved Burnout Takedown/Revenge.

I actually enjoyed the beta and the Giant Bomb quick look, so I might be buying this.

I've noticed this new review scale; can't wait till 10/10 is the minimum acceptable score!

Doesn't seem too bad, but my Heart is with Iron this month followed by me living in a House of a Dying Sun. So it will have to wait a while.

Well, you tried.

I've watched a few, but do any specifically mention PS4 visuals? I can get it on PC, but I wanted to get it on console because I may be traveling a lot this summer, so I can bring my PS4 with me. But I don't want to get it there if it's super bad looking.

Lost any interest I had in this game after finding out it would be open world.
And these reviews aren't making me want to check out the game (mabye after a few price drops or a sale)

As I understand it, DICE thinks the process of actively choosing to unlock a thing, encourages better awareness and usage of it.

From what I played of the beta, the controls feel great, it was immediately noticeable. Jumping, wall running and so on felt smooth, lot smoother than the original

Combat sounded ok at first, when they were only talking about how they were integrating momentum and you'd dodge bullets by maintaining speed and could pull off special attacks on the run and keep moving.

But then there were open combat arenas for some reason.

It seems like they were aware that that was kind of rubbish, as they didn't talk about that at all. "There's these dumb combat arenas where you awkwardly dodge around and whittle down health bars." Don't recall hearing any of that.

Oh well, reportedly those parts are rare, so that's good. Why are they there at all though? Don't understand what happened there.

I would honestly greatly prefer no to little story rather than an aggressively bad and annoying story.

Just go the Dark Souls/Hyper Light Drifter route if you can't be bothered to write halfway decent dialogue and story scenarios.

Sounds like a good game with some flaws.

I'd buy it at launch if not for the stupid typical EA shenanigans due to which my regional version on Origin does not include english language.

Seems like the definition of mixed reviews. Although a lot of the more negative ones seem to belabor the combat which I found to be pretty fun in the beta. I can't really afford to buy any games right now, but I'll pick this up sometime over the summer.

I never finished the first game but the idea of an open world ME didn't seem very interesting to me. It seems like it wasn't the best choice for the game. Shame.
