Just as expected, why put Neo at e3 when e3 should be all about games? Wasting 15 minutes showing a console is a waste of time when they can show us games for Ps4 wich is what and fans want, do Neo own event to talk with more detail and that´s it.

Amazing news lads, time to celebrate now!

At least we now know that console generations are not dead. Recently there has been so much depressing news and it seems traditional gaming was going.

Tinfoil hat time.

Did they get wind of Scorpio's specs and decide to make adjustments? Surely not.

Unlikely. E3 has changes to the last minute but hardware reveals aren't something you change your strategy on reaction.

Plus, insiders have said for a while now that Neo might not be at E3.

They do not need to show it at E3. They are not launching a new console platform. It is a more powerful box in the same echosystem, playing the same software.

Same goes for MSFT.

Man, some of you are just embarrassing.

Hey, there's actually some sense in here. Nice.

Imagine if they never said anything. People would be crying out for Sony's blood next week. A little disappointing, sure, but this at least helped to set expectations straight for the show and the audience.

But Sony doesn't have declining sales and flop system sis so truly they don't need to be dragged. Plus with the added benefit of having third parties including many first party titles themselves, they aren't on the brink of extinction and actually need to show this system, unlike Nintendo. Sad, because Zelda might be the only thing y'all get this year while the PS4 is still well supported until 2017 😂😂

Uh...I guess you didn't hear about the 2017 Zelda delay.

My Wii U is just for VC, Mario Kart, and back catalogue stuff at this point. Paper Mario and FE# are all that's left this year.

Not sure if already posted, but there is more in the article on the motivations for this, and the kind of model they seem to be projecting.

So the model may not be one of endless generations as much as revisions within generations at technological inflection points.

Also:

The investment required to develop the new PS4 is already accounted for in Sony’s latest financial results, he added./QUOTE]

Yes! Traditional console generation alive!

I love all the angry posts that are ambiguous about whether they're angry about the Neo existing or it not being at E3.

Good. more space for more games.

It would be interesting to see what the people who trashed Nintendo for this reason say about this now

oprah-shade-birthday.gif

Is this serious? Sony is doing z regular E3 and not showing just one game all day.

and that one game isn't even coming this year.

Well I am looking at buying another ps4, but I won't be buying anything until the new one comes out, knowing this is happening is going to kill sales for people that are on the fence or know what it is and wanted to get it over the current model.

As a company it would be strange not to react on your competitors though.

It's likely Sony already knew about Scorpio, and surmised the power difference of it potentially launching a year later. For context, MS pieced together the general performance the PS3 would have while working on the 360.

Sony might feel "OK" about the power difference, it might be a planned and acceptable trade-off for launching earlier without competition.

They should have a single Neo under a glass pyramid with 2 cops protecting it, like they did with the PS2 waaaay back in the day.

Now we are fully in the weird. The console won't be there, but will gameplay for future releases be based on the specs for PS4, or Neo?

Isn't it a bit early to start calling downgrades out ;)?

Seriously though, I do not think Sony is going to do that with E3 footage. Also, given what we know about PS4K Neo mode requirements (PS4K Neo Mode required to run games at >=30 FPS in 1080p mode and in 4K mode required to have the same framerate as in 1080p mode) if we were to see 4K footage it would be something very very close as it would look at 1080p on PS3.

That's a weird way to announce a console.

Its more an announcement of business strategy than a console.

Sony sez to business: Yes we are going the iterative route, but no we aren't phasing out PS4 prematurely, and both sku's are anticipated to coexist via a shared software ecosystem.

We're not throwing dates and figures out yet because that would potentially impede PS4 sales for this year, but we're copping to it being a real thing so as to undercut whatever MS have planned.

Besides, they have PSVR to launch, so why further inflate entry cost on that with the promise of another hardware launch too close.

This is your chance, Phil!

We're not getting any hardware at E3, are we?

At the very least we are getting an xbox slim...and probably xbox media/streaming boxes

It doesn't seem that sony is doing the endless generation model like microsoft...instead just two tiers of hardware

Is there any way to read the link without subbing?

GAF has you covered.

Sony is developing an upgraded version of its PlayStation 4 gaming console that will offer ultra-high definition 4K resolution and richer graphics, according to the unit’s chief executive, as the company strives to maintain its lead over rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

The plan marks the first time that Sony has improved the processing power of a PlayStation midway through the usual console cycle, as it looks to keep up with the more rapid pace of product launches in the smartphone and PC sectors.

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”

The new console, which is codenamed “Neo”, will target hardcore gamers, he said, as well as consumers with a 4K television set looking for more high-resolution content.

As well as new hardware, Sony is also seeking to broaden the appeal of the PS4 through new services such as its PS Vue internet TV and a PS Music partnership with Spotify, the streaming company.

Reports of the new console emerged in March on gaming news site Kotaku after Sony began talking to developers about creating games that were compatible with the improved hardware.

Anticipation intensified ahead of next week’s E3 gaming conference in Los Angeles, where Microsoft is also believed to be planning to launch an updated Xbox One console.

However, in a move that may disappoint some fans, Mr House said that Sony would not be unveiling its new console next week and refused to say when or at what price the unit would go on sale. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” he said.

Nonetheless, he downplayed concerns that the move would cause interoperability problems between the old and new PS4 hardware.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he said.

Both PS4 variants will also support its forthcoming virtual reality headset, which will go on sale later this year.

Developers should also see a “seamless” experience between the two versions, he said, requiring a “small but manageable” amount of extra work when creating a game for both.

Mr House did not go as far as Xbox chief Phil Spencer in saying that consoles would become more like PCs, seeing regular improvements to their components rather than jumping between generations as they have for the last 30 years, he saw an opportunity to deliver “some additional benefits” to both consumers and developers within what is usually a five to six year lifespan.

“The consumer is attuned to a different cadence of innovation in technology thanks in great part for the upgrades cadence on mobile phones or PCs,” Mr House said.

Despite a resurgence in PC gaming and the popularity of smartphone games such as Angry Birds and Candy Crush Saga, PlayStation 4 become Sony’s fastest-selling console yet, reaching cumulative sales of 40m last month — far ahead of its rivals. Analysts at IHS, a consultancy, estimate that Microsoft’s Xbox One had sold 21m units at the end of March, while sales of Nintendo’s Wii U have struggled.

Even as overall console sales growth in the US, the largest gaming market, slowed in May, according to market researcher NPD, PS4 continued to grow, boosted by the success of its new Uncharted 4 game, which is not available on other platforms.

As with the current PS4 and its forthcoming VR headset, the new console will be “standalone profitable at the time that we launch it”, Mr House said. In past generations, Sony subsidised the cost of the console in the hopes of turning a profit through software sales. The investment required to develop the new PS4 is already accounted for in Sony’s latest financial results, he added.

This would hardly have been the first time that new hardware was unveiled at E3

Tin foil hat mode:

Very interesting that they are revealing Ps4k to eurogamer, who has been having inside scoop for a while now.

Kinda makes you think it was all controlled leaks to try driving the scorpio out of the nest.

I know scorpions don't live in nests, but I couldn't miss the pun :p

Eurogamer?

The game industry is like the wrestling industry where you can never say never.

That being said, anyone who thinks that Microsoft are going to announce the scorpio in any sort of definitive way, other than maybe 'we have some surprises in the future we cant talk about') is delusional.

Their global sales are already terrible (contextually) so i dont think even the inevitable slim versions announcement will stop XBO console sales from tanking for a year due to people knowing something better is coming along.

Where is the guy who REFUSED to believe its existence in the original leak thread? :)

There were so many. And so many are going to go with PC builds now. This is just a natural transition for the iterative market. Good. I can't wait to see my steam friends list explode with all the new PC gaffers. I'm sure it will happen.

The difference is the WiiU is dead and buried, and it's expected that Nintendo would be smart enough to announce new hardware.

MS and Sony do not have to do this, as their sales are still going strong. It's not that complicated, and there's certainly no hypocrisy going on if that's what you're implying.

That comes with the argument that. Showing new hardware can cause Sony and MS to retink their decision and make adjustments to give their hardware the edge. So no matter how u spin it the guy is right. People are down playing nintendo but if Sony does it, The reaction is Luke warm

Guess Sony will be more VR focused at E3 If the neo is a no show

Bingo. They have another product that is more important than NEO and it has to do well. This E3 is going to be about new multi-plat and exclusive games and VR if it isn't about NEO and VR.

Why do so many people think Sony and MS react to each and every move the competition makes? Lol...this is delayed to combat scorpion? Doesn't make any sense

I'm excited for the Neo, but whether or not you are, you should be excited that they're not talking about it at E3. There will be some VR talk at the conference, sure, but they've already announced a lot this week. This is setting up nicely to be a great conference for games.

so it's basically a PS4. i'm thinking of the thing apple have going on with the iphones. they release the iphone 6 then later on the 6S which has updated internals capable of better performance but they are of course still part of the same generation. i think that is actually a smart idea. a lot of people just simply don't care if a game runs at 720/900/1080p or 30/60fps. the more "hardcore" people will so they will obviously go for the higher end model.

Does this mean it might be out next year then? Maybe they've heard word of MS plans and put it on hold lol. Either way I'm glad it's not at E3 I want to see games for the standard PS4.
