Iwata Asks unreleased interviews translated

Matt Walker ( @gypsyOtoko on Twitter ) is translating all previously unreleased Iwata Asks and will be gradually releasing them in conjunction with Nintendo World Report, first translated interview is from 2008 for Animal Crossing (according to the interview AC started in concept as a dungeon crawler). Very awesome of him to do this for fans to conmemorate Iwata's passing a year ago, will update thread as more interviews are added;

That was really fascinating from a number of perspectives. You had the seminar setting, the origins of Animal Crossing, and, in retrospect, how Iwata publicly commented on the disappointing reception to City Folk some years afterwards.

Looking forward to the rest.

About Animal Crossing; I never knew the idea for it grew from one Nintendo developer's feeling a bit down because he was busy and couldn't find time to game with his kids, but it makes me smile (and I have to say it doesn't really surprise me).

Nice!

It was great to hear how Animal Crossing came to life.

The comment about there being too many items to collect is funny since I know some people who actually got (or rather catalogued) everything in New Leaf.

I'm also suddenly reminded of my efforts to obtain every seasonal/limited edition item that you can't buy from stores. I think I was just missing a handful before I stopped...

There's a Iwata Asks for both Metroid Prime 3 AND Pandora's Tower but both weren't translated? WHAT!?

Pandora's Tower was translated of course, how did you miss this?

Still waiting on Nintendo to release a beautiful, hardcover book containing all of the Iwata Asks interviews. Maybe a portion of the proceeds can go to cancer research so that it doesn't seem like they're trying to profit off Iwata's death.

They're just such fantastic interviews, I'd love to have a legit hardcopy of them.

I want to live in a world where Animal Crossing was a dungeon crawler.

I want both of these.

I still feel like the original animal crossing, especially E+ on gamecube, have way more work put into them than new leaf. The amount of removed ideas from E+ to new leaf is shitty.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I'd buy a Nintendo-published book of these interviews immediately.

So many people have said and wanted this for years. I'd want this more than official Mother 3 EN release lol.

Hey everybody,

First off I'd like to give a huge thanks to Agent Unknown for making a thread and sharing these with everyone! I'm just a fan like everyone else, and always being interested in what things are like behind the scenes, adored Iwata Asks.

Next up I want to thank everyone who has any interest in them! I hope you all enjoy reading these as much as I did. Also, if you feel like anything was poorly worded or doesn't make sense please feel free to let me know - I'm only human, and translated all of these after a full day of work and childcare so they're not reflective of my best work...

Just to give you guys some background on how this came up - like some of you, I always wanted Nintendo to make a book with all of the Iwata Asks that I'd be there to purchase, day one. It occurred to me when Iwata-san died that there was always the possibility that Nintendo might remove those from the web, and so I always wanted to archive all of them as a collection of PDFs just in case.

Fast forward to a month ago - I finally realized I could save HTML files to my Dropbox from my iPhone, and archived all of them in English. Given the timing, I though it would be great if we could put all of them together to offer as a mega-PDF to share with everyone for archival purposes.

When looking into that I found that list on Wikipedia that indicated not all of them had been translated into English - so I immediately archived those files in Japanese as PDFs, and decided it would be amazing if we could get all of those into English, then offer those along with the officially translated ones as a free, comprehensive Iwata Asks PDF Collection. Doing it in conjunction with Nintendo World Report would mean we'd actually have people to edit my translations into something readable and maybe even have someone that could arrange the content into a nice PDF.

We're still working on that, but for now I thought it would be nice if we could start posting the translated ones on NWR to commemorate Iwata-san. I've already translated about 1/3 of the content based on what I found on that Wikipedia page (all of the "Other" and "Wii U" columns), and just started on "Kikitrick" last night.

Looking at the comments, I was unaware until now that at least some of them were already posted on nintendo.co.uk - I should go through those and see what else has already been translated.

I unfortunately don't get much time to read Gaf, but if anyone has any comments or requests please feel free to leave them here - I'll do what I can to address them. If you like what you've read please feel free to tell someone at Nintendo, like Bill Trinnen, that you're enjoying them! ^_~

Cheers,

The work is much appreciated!

I feel this is the place to point out that we never got a full translation of this December 2014 4gamer interview with Iwata. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=959746

If anybody knows someone with the time and knowledge to take care of that... :D

Hey TheMoon- thanks for the reply. That's a great idea! Since it turns out a couple I thought I'd have to translate were up on the UK website, I could look into translating that 4Gamer interview instead. I really enjoyed that one.

If you guys haven't checked them out, I highly recommend reading the ones on 1101.com- Itoi-san's website.

I know there's at least an English version of the latest one with Sakamoto-San for Miitomo- but my favorite is the one with Miyamoto-San right after Iwata-San died where they talk about Mario Maker.

I can't wait for the Rhythm Heaven Megamix one to get translated! Unfortunately, Iwata passed before that game was announced for a North American release, so the Iwata Asks never got an official English release. (It's also not listed on the that Wikipedia article listing all the Iwata Asks, for some reason.) Kudos to Matt and NWR for helping right this wrong!

You should see if you could find other interviews outside Iwata Asks that included Iwata. Like the translated Earthbound interview Iwata and Itoi had in Hobonichi before its release in the Japanese Wii U VC.

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to let you know the next one has gone up:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/...-in-commemoration-part-2-tomodachi-collection

I translated the Rhythm Heaven Megamix interview yesterday, and since a couple people have indicated interest maybe we'll put that one up next.

I'm also keeping note of all the other interviews people are mentioning in the thread. Hopefully I'll get some time to move on to those after finishing this series!

Cheers,

M

Okay, so, this is a personal and somewhat complex web of nonsense involving a highly unstable individual I was friends and briefly FWBs with, but I can only assume there will be a never-ending clusterfuck on gaf now until the end of time, which inevitably involves you guys and gals on the mod team in some way, so I'm an open book here. The woman in question ended up being completely psychotic and held a grudge against me after a bizarre love triangle situation developed a few years ago between me, her, and another girl (the other girl I ended up in a long-term relationship with shortly thereafter). This NOLA story she apparently just put up on social media is a delusion of a deeply disturbed person who had a total psychological breakdown as a result of me and the other girl getting together, because she (phew, yeah...) became obsessively infatuated with the other girl (she's bi) on sight when the three of us met up. I wanted to just stay friends with the girl making the accusation and made it super super clear ahead of time that me and the other girl were interested in each other romantically and that could play out as such when we met up. Supposedly this was not a problem for her from accusation, but in reality she uhhh wanted me to die painfully after seeing me and the other girl interact. Plus she became infatuated with the other girl simultaneously to this (she's bi), which created the aforementioned bizarre love triangle that ended up causing her to implode and have an apparently very intense and long-lasting grudge. The whole story about how that love triangle thing played out is, frankly, nuts and scary, and involves this girl bringing us to a compound of dangerous scientology spinoff cultists on that same trip, who roofied us, attempted to recruit/scam me and attempted to abduct/rape the girl I ended up dating, in what was a fucking scary situation that resulted in me and the other girl and the rest of my friend circle never speaking to this girl from the accusation again.

Is there a file share link to PDF versions? I was thinking of compiling, but would hate to go through all of that if it's already been done.

@Kagoshima_Luke

I have PDFs of all of the official English ones in my Dropbox, and I've started going through the Japanese ones, only to realize there's actually quite a bit on that Wikipedia page that isn't clearly listed as not translated.... I'm still going through to figure out what still needs to get done.

I could share all the English PDFs with everyone - what would be the best way to do that? Would Dropbox hold up with lots of people connecting to it, or is there a better alternative?
