So, what do you DO in No Man's Sky?

If you have played Terraria, Starbound, Edge of Space, and other games like them you should have an idea of what you do in NMS.

The problem with comparisons to Minecraft is that Minecraft lets you build without objective.

The only thing you can seemingly do in No Man's Sky without an objective is scan planets and look at stuff.

No Man's Sky = Aquairum/Zoo.

Minecraft = unlimited Lego Set.

Minecraft never really gets boring because of it's unlimited scope of user creation. No Man's Sky is already "built." All we're doing is flying through it on our way to something in the middle of the galaxy.

But how many times do people go back to the Aquarium/Zoo just to look around at variations of the same wildlife?

Again, you're missing the point of the Minecraft comparisons. I even mentioned people being caught up in the building aspect in the post you quoted. There's more to do in Minecraft besides building. When my friends and I play we generally focus on exploring once we have our home base built. That became the game for us, with building as a secondary focus. If you read the Game Informer articles that have been posted in this thread (or in the OP) you can see that there is more to do besides flying around and looking at the scenery.

It's like people don't even read the OP.

Dude, we should be told directly what to do. The creator of this space walking simulator should have had multiple gameplay related interviews by now as well as a minimum 10 page spread in a popular magazine spelling out what you can DO in this game.

But nooooooooo .....

Wait what? He has done all those things? Well fuck that, sounds exhausting

No, there's a single predetermined universe seed that's on everyone's disc/download. From this seed everything is generated pseudo-randomly (as in seemingly random, but the same every time) through a series of mathematical functions.
A minor note of interest; Random number generators, even pseudo-random, make for a very bad basis for procedural content. What you want are coherent functions, meaning functions that, given small changes in inputs, give small changes in output (which is the exact opposite of what you want in a good PRNG).

I just saw this in the concluding paragraph of a Game Informer article/interview with Sean Murray:

Um... Not exactly shaking my pom-poms over that...

Gather resources, upgrade your ship/suit, get to the center of the galaxy. This is exactly what they've been saying the core mechanic of the game is from the very beginning.

Nothing has changed. I'm still excited for this game.

Haven't seen this one answered yet:

If a player makes changes to a planet (say they destroy something there), is that change reflected for the next player who lands on that planet?

even destruction?

if i fly through an asteroid belt and destroy parts of an asteroid to resemble a giant penis, this will forever be known as the boner-belt?

Might be pushing it with persistent asteroids, but that would be pretty damn cool. Your question leads me to another question, will asteroids ever impact planets?

We don't know yet, but it's unlikely. I'd say that "major events" are only being recorded, changes to parameters they deem important. Stripping the planet of resources, discovering or taking an artifact, killing off a species, the "one bit thing" you can do in every system etc. will be saved for all players. Drilling a hole through an asteroid, killing 10 rabbits or one guardian robot etc. probably won't be saved.

Storing all of that small data for every hole, killed creature or ounce of mineral would stack up very fast for every player and every planet so it's not a really sensible thing to do.

Sean has said that small changes won't be recorded. I believe his example was if you kill a bird, it won't record it, but if you wipe out an entire species of bird, it will

Something like that.

I also remember him saying that deciding on what circumstances a permanent change happens was a really hard task, because it changes a variable in the equation for that planet.

don't recall seeing this one before:

I haven't read the entire thread so someone correct me if I'm wrong / redundant, but isn't the center of a galaxy a black hole? Could there be some Interstellar level stuff for the end game?

yep, you're correct about the black hole. nothing concrete past that though. funny enough that sean murray said he hadn't seen Interstellar in the one interview i read.

What if... when you reach the centre of the universe you get to become a god and they give you some dev tools which let you create your own galaxy seed to your own specification

(It'll be an achievement and a new skin for your ship)

There's a new Gameinformer 40 minute video - Managing the Hype of No Man's Sky - Extended Interview. I think it's a really good insight into how Hello Games are thinking, having no real PR plan, no additional funding or anything like that, working with a small team etc.

Nice to hear they don't read message boards :) Hearing people call it a "walking simulator" and "boring" would probably get to them. It's clear they have a vision for the game and I don't want random posters online influencing it.

THIS!!!

I've been saying it quite a few times:

1. They're making this game with a certain demographic in mind, as in this game is only going to appeal to certain players - i.e., Minecraft

2. The fact that this little team is sharing/showcasing this game on a AAA stage (minus the fluff) has got people skeptical about Hello Games positive, yet optimistic outlook....it's a paradox that only time can solve.

Another Game Informer article: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2014/12/19/the-secret-story-behind-no-man-s-sky.aspx

This one covers Hello Games and how No Man's Sky came to be. No new info about the game but it was a great read regardless and gives a good insight into the indie development process.

Next update is on the 22nd.

That bit about them having a one way mirror is funny. Some of the other members of the team that weren't working on NMS could get glimpses of what's inside that room if the lights were dimmed enough, or someone saw a book cover with an airship so they started making all kinds of wrong conclusions about what those four were actually making. :)

Two more videos are out (YouTube links):
- The Story Behind No Man's Sky Concert At PSX (8:59)
- Creating No Man's Sky Infinite Soundtrack (24:11)

The infinite soundtrack video has some interesting bits, they talk about trying to create memorable key moments with the music as an influential tool, so the first time you enter your ship, leave a planet, dock at a station, discover various important things on various planets or reach the center of the galaxy, you will hear an accompanying variation of the soundtrack that's designated for those key moments, and hopefully every player will have it sound a bit differently, depending on various factors. Sounds like a really interesting take on doing sound design.

Since the PSX concert and actually listening to 65daysofstatic the stuff going on with the soundtrack is another one of the things I'm super hyped for.

New info gleaned from the above: gathering resources will be a lot more interesting than in most other games and Sean Murray will have PETA on his case any minute.

Nice! So blowing holes in asteroids doesn't stop there, you can apparently do the same kind of damage to terrain, hell yeah.

"So, a thing that we haven't really shown off yet is resources. We're not generally showing this - and it will look better in the finished game - but you can scan by pressing [the square button], and you can 'see' certain resources... You can look around..."

As Sean scans the environment, cubes of collectible materials are outlined against the terrain. He then fires projectiles towards them, destroying great chunks of the scenery with a shimmery sci-fi sound effect.

"You can see the terrain is destructible, which is something we haven't shown people before..."

So you can terraform?

"We're not sure how much we want to say because I don't want it to become the thing. Even showing this I'm nervous, because people will think, 'Oh, right - it's like Minecraft', and then it becomes that. 'It's the Minecraft in space game!'

"Resource gathering in every game is normally super boring, and people purposely make it like a chore. And we want it to be fun. It's something we're still playing about with. It's quite fun to be able to do it from a distance, and we also have this grenade thing. Now this isn't how it will look - it will be like plasma ball - you'll just have to trust me. And that blows holes in the terrain. And if you're really good... [Sean expertly levels the surrounding scenery]

"I find myself just doing this, being on a mountain and scanning and then just destroying everything around me. Doing the usual stupid things of drilling a hole and having an animal fall into it. Stuff like that keeps me amused. And when people are like, 'What do you do [in No Man's Sky]?', the reality is, for some people just that, and that's fine.

Sounds like resource gathering incorporates terrain destruction. Man, if gathering resources requires you to crumble shit into pieces similar to Red Faction Guerrilla then it sounds like a grindy action such as this might just become the most fun part of the game.

Sounds like Murray is going to go into hiding until the game is released. More power to ya. I am def. on blackout from this title. Hoepfully I can stick to it unlike Bloodborne.

The game will be about discovery and exploration and the unknown so I don't want everything spoiled. Good to know he will just be focusing 100% on the game and getting it finished in 2015.

since that interview the whole team watched the movie, they said it was "not realistic", but of course did not spoil what their centre of the galaxuy will do...although when asked if there were black holes he did confirm that yes there are "space structures" foufn in relality besides just planets and stars.

B-b-b-bump!

Why? Well it seems literally the day before NMS was released Sean Murray linked to this 2 year old thread on the official website as a primo example as to what you can do in NMS.

http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/what-do-you-do-in-no-mans-sky/

- Escort and Defend (escort ships on their journey, defend them from enemy attacks)
- Destroy Ships (destroy trader ships, lone or groups of traveler NPCs, choose sides in huge fleet battles or evade them altogether, kill the local police)

Participating in conflict between factions will win favors with one over the other, meaning one faction will give you wingmen for support or trader discounts while the other will actively attack you if you're in bad relations with them

Boy I'd sure like to play that game.

I quite like that the official NMS website links here, really. In fairness, other than the 3 quoted things the rest is in there.

*shrug* thought it'd be interesting to note that right up until the day of release Murray was actively advertising things in the game that weren't there with added GAF involvement.
