I've been mulling over this the past few days, but I've officially decided that I am done, and I need to trade the game in asap for credit before the value goes down even further.

Time to watch that segment of the Angry Joe video I skipped over... and other "reactions" to reaching center.

I know what happens, it is just time to see it. Doing the Atlas Path was enough for me. Warp > Warp > Warp > Black Hole > Warp > Warp > etc grind is simply not fun.

Atlas path was kinda fun.

Upgrading my inventory to 36 or so slots by finding a rich cave and making quick $$ was kinda fun.

Reaching the center is not.

Even finding / trading ships feels like much more work than it is worth... ugh...

I got the game a week after release after reading all the complaints and impressions, I just wanted to be part of this slice of gaming history I guess. Seeing 30-40 or so planets provided 2 or 3 that ended up "wow"ing me in some way... but I've seen it all. I know it.

To be honest, I like the game, but I have no idea why they're still using the 2013 trailer on their Steam page. Use the 4 pillars trailer or something. Makes no sense.

Plus they still have screenshots of a working portal, a migrating herd of creatures, and a crashed capital ship on their official web site. It's baffling that they're still promoting features and content that are no longer in the game. They need some PR help.

You might as well wait to trade in at this point until a few content updates come out, which will hopefully improve the reputation of the game.

Is there any sort of strategy to finding the last animal you need? I need the first one on the list and I can't find it for the life of me.

Also, is there a definitive list as to the order the animals go as far as: land, sea, air, water, underground goes?

The way people reacted didn't really surprise me. This is what happens when you literally don't try to do damage control at all. The game also had a lot of detractors even before it's release.

There is a lot of outrage over the missing features. But truth to be told. Most people didn't even knew those features were ever promised in the first place until they played the game and didn't end up enjoying and/or it didn't meet their expectations.

For me I already would have been happy if it had been a walking simulator with a lot of variety on the planets. But as I played and explored and then read about all the missing features, even though I was enjoying my time. I couldn't help but feel deeply dissapointed of what could have been. The content update has to be rather substantial for people to regain some trust.

the ASA thing is totally fair and to me just feels like neglect on HG's part rather then malice. They never ever were timely with their online stuff. Even after the date had passed the game's PC release date was still unchanged on their own site I believe.
How can you possibly claim to know what most buyers knew about what the game was marketed to be?

Land Predators are usually at the top. Most planets tend to have at least one, although that isn't always the case. It's usually one at the top that I find last as well. They are often found near a cave entrance or in the midst of a bunch of non violent creatures. Sometimes they may only come out at night as well.

Typically I just walk a few minutes away from my ship and it pops up when I'm among other animals. Often times I don't notice it until being attacked.

Thanks for the info. I wish there was an upgrade to the visor that made seeking them out easier.

I'm convinced the creature spawning is bugged. I have spent over 40 hours now on the same planet trying to find the last creature. There are no caves and no water so the places it could be are really limited. But I can't find it anywhere. I just can't drag myself away now until it somehow magically appears.

I wish they would improve the scanning for creatures. You can scan for all sorts of crap for miles around. Yet creatures only appear as tiny white dots until you are on top of the bastards.

Yeah, the scanning isn't great. The worst is finding a red dot but it's a variation of an already discovered species.

I actually just got the 10 planet achievement finally. I have been to hundreds of planets but would only look for all of them if I was finding quite a few quickly after landing. A few planets I did leave though with one or two left undiscovered. If I didn't find the last one or two in 30 minutes, I bailed. Wasn't going to stress over it and figured I would have better luck next time.

I also typically ignore trying on planets where fauna is labeled uncommon or rare. Especially if it's a bunch of species on the planet. It hard enough sometimes when it's labeled an average number or higher.

My 10th planet only had 6 species and I found them all within 5 minutes. Not surprisingly, not a single predator on the planet which made it much quicker.

There seem to be two kinds of birds as well (not including the flying "eel" creatures).

- Ones that fly in a circle and take a while to disappear
- Migrating birds (normally larger) that tend to fly in one direction and are easy to miss! Keep an eye out for shadows.

This has alerted me to what I've been missing so many times.

Also, there can be migrating flying creatures that are nocturnal. I've come across maybe 3 or 4 of them in my travels, but they definitely exist. They usually are pretty big too.

I stopped playing not because of the bad reputation but because of the crash everytime I went to light-speed.

Im waiting for some free update to come out.

I heard going to the center of the universe is disapointing.

I haven't heard of constant crashing, like what you're mentioning, after the most recent round of patches (v1.09?), but yeah I'd wait until they put out some additional features or content before you dive back in.

As for the center, getting there ought to be something that self-motivated; there's no real narrative reason to do-- no story payoff-- so I'd say as long as the exploration aspect of NMS, and your desire to check out some of the worlds it throws at you, is the motivator, then yeah, take your time and make your way towards the center at your own pace. If you're itching for some kind of payoff other than self-satisfaction however, I'd say it's probably not worth it.

Thanks yeah im too used to play story games that I forgot some games are mean to be played for the sake of the journey and exploration and not the ending.

My game has locked up more in the latest update than even with the day-1 patch. It's getting frustrating now, so I might take a break until the next patch.

I can see myself getting heavily into this again once more content is added. But I've definitely gotten my money's worth already!

Same here. I have to be honest and say I'm a little bored with it at the moment but after 200 hours I'd be surprised if I wasn't. I'm keeping myself interested by doing small tasks. I've just amassed 150m just in case base building costs money, and now I'm searching for my perfect star ship. Once I've done that then I'll be looking for an Earth like planet for when the new content drops.

I've only got about 69 million... still holding out for that perfect ship!

But yeah I must be approaching 200 hours. Worth every penny.

40M at the moment, and i've parked at Hirk's Treasury, just in case that i'll need more money when the content update comes.

I really hope that some day we'll get to play the game that was on the trailers. The funny thing is that (to my knowledge) none of those trailer where pre-rendered or something like that. The famous Oria V trailer was playable, planets covered with snow were playable, and maybe many many more. Maybe those thing were possible on PC, but not on PS4 because of the weak CPU, and so they scaled down their game in order to meet Sony guidelines or something like that.

I've seen many snowy planets, could you describe what the trailer show that aren't in the game?
I've seen at least two lush red grassed planets too like in the Oria V trailer and I've seen creatures big enough to run in circles around their legs below their belly. I'm not saying that I've seen everything from the trailers but I think many complaints comes from those that believe they've seen it all after visiting 10 planets or whatever.
What I haven't seen from the trailers is the huge sand worm and working portals. The UI looks different too.

You can disregard the freighter, just look at those planets, i landed on cold planets, but nothing like this.

I have visited hundreds of planets , and i never came across a planet with the density, variety, and creatures of Oria V.

Barring the giant freighter (which I hope they add back in with a content update) I've seen snowy planets like that.

I never came across something like this, the Arctic barren world with no vegetation (like Hoth from Star Wars). All the cold planets i've been to, always had trees and vegetation.

This is actually true and to me a slight disappointment. I'd also like to see a planet with nothing but meadows or swamps or marshes or desserts. It's not as if it's beyond what the procedural generation can do but they're not there. Perhaps the next update will offer more variety in this regard.

I had at least one cold (ice/snow) planet with no vegetation. Wasn't that amazing to look at though and I would say it still looks more snowy in the trailer.

I've definitely seen planets like that. There are a lot of repeated themes you'll see, like a certain few plants that you always see together on the same type of planet, and I can understand why that would make people believe they've seen it all. Even still, I occasionally run into something I haven't seen, and it's wonderful.

Right now, I'm on an icy planet where the conditions are "whiteout" so it's basically always a snow storm. On this planet, there are floating bacteria tendril things, and at least four different dangerous animal species. I'll fly over a ridge and my scanner will pick up like 30 crab-like things below, just waiting to swarm anything that runs out of juice mid-flight. There are also triceratops-like animals on this planet, which is the first time I've run into those in the game.

Just recently, I witnessed a hunter animal take out another animal. I thought I had seen it before, but wasn't completely sure because there were bushes and rocks in the way. But this time, it was in an open area, and this hunter ran up and pounced on a grazing creature. It just stood over the dead body for a while, then wandered off.

I love the idea that you can't possibly see everything in the game. I mean, there's probably enough in the way of ship/creature/plant components to have near-infinite combinations, but it's also possible that you might never even see some of those base components used in any combination. It's just a matter of getting a good roll.

Whatever opinions I have this for this game, they not overly positive in all honesty, the soundtrack is one of my favourite gaming soundtracks of all time. Fucking brilliant.

Many times, yes, snowy planets is not at all uncommon from my experience. The green lush ones are extremely rare though, but like I said I've seen at least two planets with dense red grass just like in the Oria V trailer, maybe not with that amount of creatures though. I might be wrong here but going by my experience I think the redish and greenish suns holds bigger planet variety than the white ones, so go for those if you're exploring to find different type of planets and creatures.

I hate those! Those evil crab/spider things has been on some of my planets too, attacking instantly and like you say often found in big swarms too, they're tiny too so if the grass is higher you might not even see them unless you use the scanner. :S

Checked my screenshots of that planet and while it's indeed barren, the snow looks more like a 1 cm thick white film covering the normal rock texture instead of the ice/snow looking surface in that trailer.

btw I just visited my first 300+ °C planet (basically 3x the "normal" extreme hot planet temperature). I was surprised it didn't eat through my protection faster TBH.

Yeah, the 'look' of the snow isn't as good. But I've found blizzard worlds with no flora and extreme cold, even bits that look like ice.

I need to get the hundreds of screenshots i have off my PS4.

Yeah, snow planets (really, most planets) don't look great without vegetation because the ground textures are pretty low-res. I don't know why that is and hope Hello can improve them. The snow textures are probably the worst of the bunch.

The trailer shot looks like an extreme cold planet. I've seen snowy winds and whiteout haze when flying on those. I don't think I've ever seen white-colored grass like in the freighter shot though.

I've seen that colour grass before but not on a snowy planet. Don't think I've come across any grass on a slowly planet yet.

Most cold planets I have visited seem to have vegetation. Always seems to have that leafless tree.

The most ridiculous are water worlds with temps -75C. Islands are snow covered but water everywhere. Shame ice isn't in the game.

I really wish the sky became overcast during storms. Having the sun out while in an extreme storm is a tad disappointing. Actually, I hope they also change up the clouds in general. I think all planets have the same cloud formation directly over the players head. Which looks like some puny cirrus clouds.

Funny people bring up the crabs. I'm wondering if Sean Murray has some hatred or phobia about crabs, because killer crabs seem to be everywhere in this Universe.

I thought I already found all the blueprints apart from atlas pass 2 and 3, but I randomly just got the one for the unstable plasma.... which is very useless as a consumable lol

Edit: uhm... I need far less resources to charge the plasma launcher than crafting the unstable plasma.

I must say there's only few items, elements etc in this game and yet so many of them are useless or feel balanced for some other version of the game :/
You would think that level of complexity should take one guy one working day to figure it out.

Why? It's an alien world, who knows what's in that water keeping it from freezing! But yeah they should add ice at some point.

Pretty sure an update to the cloud generation is coming in content update one. Whenever that comes!

There really should be less crabs/more variation. I've started thinking they're actually the supreme overlords of the universe.

Yeah one of the first creatures I spotted was the migrating bird. It was a right pain in the arse to scan so ended up shooting one down.

Now well over 45 hours...I suspect closer to 50, and still no sign of the elusive last creature. Several times I have noticed a white dot indicating something, but there is nothing there, just a white dot a few feet off the ground. I'm convinced this is the game bugging out on drawing it properly.

So I ended up buying Elite + the season pass on sale, and it's almost everything that I wanted NMS to be. The sheer variety of things to do is actually a bit intimidating as a n00b. The combat is miles better, but a lot of the other mechanics would have been trivial to include in NMS and it's a real shame Hello didn't. The one thing NMS does do a lot better are the planet surfaces, I can't help but wish there was a hybrid game so I could have the best of both worlds.
