Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX) is an arcade action platformer set in the old times of chivalry adventures in Spain, spiced with a retro look. It has been recently launched on PC and Xbox One and it will be launched on PS4 in the near future.

Originally it was a freeware game but now it has been extended and improved.

I've followed this guy's work for many years now. He always had the most friendly policy about giving away his previous games for free.. but he's had such a good philosophy on retro revival game design that I always wish I could pay for a copy lol.

I'm glad to see this as a full release on consoles. I think he deserves to have a paid version. I'll buy it when it comes to PS4.

I'm not the biggest fan of 1:1 homages but then again nobody is doing anything remotely similar to GnG

Any reviews / impressions ? I couldn't even get past the first stage of gng so I doubt I'll be able to get into this

I loved the non Ex versión when I tried it a long time ago. Regarding difficulty I can say it seemed a lot easier than the G'nG PSP remake. Or at least a lot more playable ;) Not a pushover by any means though.

Homage or not, why would you make a 4:3 game. In 2016.

People still like to play pixel games on CRTs in 2016 and will for quite a while. 4:3 is fine.

Looks interesting, but is it as Nintendo Hard as the GnG games?

It's fair to say it's "arcade-worthy" difficulty but it's definitely easier and more forgiving than a GnG game.

I'm not the biggest fan of 1:1 homages but then again nobody is doing anything remotely similar to GnG

GnG is definitely the primary influence but it plays like an amalgam of a few different arcade games from that era, it's not a direct facsimile of any one game.

Saw this during the Halloween sale and it went right onto the wishlist. I'm a huge fan of G&G and this looks just like it.

Been playing this recently since I picked up a Xbone.

Game is amazing... and tough. I was a big fan of G&G on the Genesis back in the day, and played the shit out of it till I could get the real ending.

I'm not sure I have the patience or time to beat this though - but it's an amazing game! Managed to make it to stage 3 a couple of nights ago...that's where the difficulty seemed to really ramp up.

I'd buy it if had a 16:9 mode, but I guess it's hard to program that if it's designed for 4:3. Looks like there's just stretch options available.

Been playing the PC release for a while now and this game is criminally underrated. I'd put it up there with the likes of Shovel Knight with regards to how polished and faithful it is to the era of videogames it's paying tribute to, while still offering enough ideas of its own to differentiate itself from the source material. Maldita Castilla also successfully makes you feel like a bad-ass; your actions may appear simplistic, but due to the limitations imposed to the player combined with how precise the hit- and hurtboxes are, some of the pixel perfect clutch moments feel extremely gratifying once you (spontaneously or otherwise) pull them off.

These kind of situations - deliberate by the developer or otherwise - still end up posing a very fair challenge too, thanks to the snappy controls. If it wasn't for the aforementioned accuracy in hit detection in conjunction with all of your abilities feeling perfectly responsive, then the difficulty curve would've certainly been rubbish instead of the incredibly delicate balance that has been struck. Another element that's commendable about this game's design is how subtle it is in gradually teaching the player, to the point these are susceptible to being unnoticed. There's some easy-to-overlook signposting going on with the environment that can assist you in dealing with certain matters, such as for example inconspicuous landmarks that actually highlight 'ideal' positioning vs obstacles or an unobtrusive tutorial for a specific kind of secret you need to acquire. A lot of thought was put into Maldita Castilla, down to the smallest of details and it was absolutely needed given the intent of clearing this game with no continues (or a minimal amount of them anyways) if you want to squeeze the most out of it.

Bottom line: charming pixel art, catchy old-school soundtrack, sufficient replayability for completionists and just all-around stellar gameplay matched with strict yet reasonable hardships. Doesn't happen often either that I have the drive / motivation to attempt 1CC'ing or no-hitting a game, yet Maldita Castilla passes that 'test' with flying colors.

I've followed this guy's work for many years now. He always had the most friendly policy about giving away his previous games for free.. but he's had such a good philosophy on retro revival game design that I always wish I could pay for a copy lol.
Having checked out his prior work, I liken him to Spanish Konjak. Both of these developers have an incredibly keen eye for retro-style experiences and have a nice track record by now.

I don't see anything wrong with this. There's borders you can enable if you really need to fill up your 16:9 screen estate or (heaven forbid) the option to stretch out the entire thing. Total non-issue.

Can you write here the URL of the store of the Ps4 version, please?

I looked it up and it's not out yet, my bad. They announced it in between and then dropped the Steam version which messed me up.

Circle/Flyhigh is handling the PS4 version and it's getting a Japanese localisation so I guess it's behind schedule.

Wow, I'm wondering how I've never heard of this game before, yet it's been out since July on XB1.

Looking at the awesome gifs and the trailer, it definitely looks like something for me. Even better is reading up about how the dev is in this thread with giving games away for free, so I'll use some of the free credit I had waiting for Black Friday sales on him.

Gotta show support to great developers.

XB1 version came out in July, then Steam very recently. I thought the PS4 version was out but it ain't, oops.

Ah, knew I wasn't hallucinating.

Still want it. I've had the freeware version forever and was happy to see a proper console release. I guess since I don't have a date on Owlboy, I know where I'm going.

Bought this months ago and freaking love it. I've beaten the core game and got to the true final boss but couldn't beat that.

Looks fantastic - will buy on PS4.

I know I'm getting old, but when I saw the 4:3 I thought it looked great.

I've been following this game for a while now, excited for its PS4 release. Looks pretty neat, but man I hate timed exclusives, especially for indies (which I assume it's the reason it's taken so long).

The only thing I'm not sure about is if I'll be able to handle the difficulty... I love hard games, but GnG is precisely the one retro series I can't handle haha.

Don't worry about this, I never was able to enjoy any Makaimura, and I finished Maldita Castilla (with bad ending). It looks like the same, but it is different enough.

Guys this game is dope, Locomalito is an absolutely amazing dev. This game honestly surpasses the G&G games for me in most ways. Should check out Hydorah as well if you like horizontal shooters.

Maldita Castilla is significantly more fair about presenting its challenges, while still requiring diligence to overcome them. Certainly not borderline BS like the Ghosts and Goblins games are notorious for.

How are the mid air controls? I can't do the Volgarr controls.
You have to commit to jumps, but you have some slight air control. It also has a collectable ability to allow you to double jump albeit at the expense of other options.

Wonderful game, and an awesome dev. Bought it day one on Steam.

Check out his other games too, which are all free. Especially Hydorah!

Yeah, just to reiterate: anyone who's curious about Maldita Castilla EX can download the original release for free and try it for themselves: https://www.locomalito.com/maldita_castilla.php

The EX version has a couple new levels and other extras like a bestiary but it's largely the same game.

Good to know it's not as hard as the GnG games, thanks guys!

Awesome. I was wondering if there were any significant gameplay changes that made them different. I'll try this first then.

Being a huge G&G fan, I just had to get this game (btw the price is reduced for gold members on XB1, at least in the Swiss store). I've played it for an hour so far and the game does not disappoint. Excellent controls, a fair difficulty level that gradually gets harder in combination with the retro graphics / music make this a must buy for arcade / retro fans. And don't get scared by the comparisons with G&G - it is definitely directly inspired by the classic game, but is much easier (at least in the beginning levels). The only complaint I have is that the levels are more linear & the enemy behaviors less interesting / challenging, at least judging by the levels I have played so far.

Definitely will go for 1cc'ing this baby :)

Update after having gotten to the (bad) end, which took me around 2 hours & 22 credits: The later levels do indeed get less linear, which is great, plus there is still a bunch of stuff to explore / achieve. The game is definitely much more manageable than G&G and never feels unfair, while still keeping you at the edge of your seat. Looking forward to zipping through the levels again, looks like it's all about memorizing the patterns to master this game. I can't commend the game design of Maldita Castilla enough - they introduce the mechanics / challenges extremely well, I'm sure it's as enjoyable for more casual players as it is for hardcore gamers.

PS: Love the references to other classics such as Pang or Contra.

Maldita Castilla EX begins rolling out on PS4 today: it's already out in Japan and it's either out in NA now or will be very soon.

(The EU release was delayed until "early January" due to some unforeseen last-minute setback.)

NOOOOOO!

But yet, so happy to discover it's coming. Between this and Volgarr, it's gonna be an happy retro Xmas for lil old me.

This is the most underappreciated game of 2016. It is absolutely amazing. I just bought it on PS4 and I already own it on XB1. It's that good. If it comes to Switch next year, I'll buy it again.

Yup. Shame that it's one of those titles that went by unnoticed and was quickly forgotten about; Maldita's expertise in game design didn't deserve this.

"The grandson of Ghosts 'n Goblins"... I feel like this would have been a very different line if this game was made by a Chinese company!

Bought this in the Steam sale. Love it. I've played all his other freebies already. A superb developer, nice to see him finally make a little money.
