NieR Automata PS4 demo available now

Is there a list of combos you can do somewhere? I liked the demo but felt like I was just mashing buttons. Would like to know more detailed things I can do.

Those cross over weapons with FFXV and Dragon Quest look cool but hope i don't actually have to own those games to get them in Nier.

Various combinations result in different movesets. Just experiment:

- Press the same button multiple times
- Use Heavy Attack after Light Attack
- Hold down the Attack button for Charge attacks
- Put Heavy Weapon on Light Attack slot
- Jump also has various moves if you time the attack button right after

And all of this is just with just two weapons. The full game will have lots more, plus loads more pod abilities.

Ew, this is why Bloodborne is the worst Souls game. You can basically beat the whole game by equipping the Hunter's axe and holding R2. All these great enemies with all their different attack patterns and you can just cheese your way through fights.
Not really. This technique only works on certain bosses. It doesn't help against Ludwig, Laurence, Rom etc.

Liked it a lot. Loved the camera stuff, played just as fun as it seemed like it would be in the videos. Lock on being a toggle threw me off, tried to find something in the options but didn't. Generally the combat feels and looks great, would like to see some combo variations but maybe that's where new swords come in, so i don't know. The music is ridiculously good, and the animations too, like, stupid good. Really like the character models too, MC has a nice air of elegance and directness that is very cool. Camera seems to veer off away from panty shots? Not sure. The run feels amazing too, movement in general feels nice. The slide felt a bit weighty? Not sure why, but the dodge was amazing, doing several dodges in a row looked really cool.

"No emotions allowed"... yeah i can totally see where this is going.

Only got to play it once last night, but the moveset was pretty straightforward.

You have a light attack string which you just hit square repeatedly to do. You can hit strong attack to do a finisher early (same finisher no matter the length). There's a strong attack string too. It looks like you can hold strong attack to charge it up too, but I don't remember playing with that much.

You can do a light attack string in midair. You can do a launcher by doing jump then strong attack while rising, if you hit strong attack after rising you do a drop or slam attack.

Beyond that, there's the dodge followups. The small sword does a launcher, large sword does a stab/stinger move.

Didn't find anything else and there doesn't appear to be any moves that require you to move in a certain direction or spin the stick or anything. Maybe the final game will add more moves though.

Oh god, the demo is not up for PS store for me. I don't see it anywhere. I don't even see a page for game. What's going on?

Soo...Platinum Games redeemed? Looks like they got a decent budget for this and the reception here is really good. Wish we got a PC demo :S

I downloaded the demo from either the Aussie or New Zealand PSN this morning (don't remember which one I made a while back) and played it on my US account

Some other stuff:

Jump + heavy attack is a launcher with each weapon if you aren't too far off the ground. Heavy while higher in air slams down.

Swapping the weapons gives them different movesets, and you can equip/use Fists in both slots.

If you shoot as a dodge followup it's a more powerful charge blast.

I feel like I'm the only one in the world having this issue, when i try to start the game in the title screen it just takes me back to the title screen again. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I can't find any help anywhere

Wow, I didn't intend to get the game as I am pretty horrible in these combo action games, but the demo was really good. Now I am nearly certain to get the game.

Nice controls, fun gameplay with a little bit of bullet hell und I like the heroine even though I don't know anything about her background yet.

For JP demo, Circle is accept and Cross is cancel. So, use Circle to select new game.

So... Am I the only one who didn't like it at all?

I feel like I've played this game before a thousand times. Same combat, same dodging, same boring boss fights that turn into a Shoot 'Em Up, with a boss that fights you with its upper body while you hit its arms when he attacks you...

Also, the game looks good from a technical point, but soo boring artistically, everything is brown and industrial, I'm so tired of pipes and brown post apocaliptic stuff in games. The robots look boring, the 2 characters we meet are the same anime cookie teenagers clones that don't know how to express feelings right...

Seriously, the only thing I liked is the music. I think I've played too many Platinum games and they won't make anything different or interesting now... Let's hope it was just a really bad demo I guess.

PS: I really, REALLY want to insist how tired I am of Japanese action games that just turn into shoot 'em ups for their boss battles, like they don't respect their combat mechanics enough to make bosses that just ask a lot of the skill you've built through the game. It may not have QTEs (hopefully), but this is worse for me.

oh my god if that's really issue here I'll kick myself haha I feel like I would've tried circle but I'll definitely double check. If it still doesn't work I'll be back but thanks :)

Does Platinum Games have a habit of releasing Definite/ GOTY versions of their games? I loved the demo but will be too busy in March to justify buying the Day One Edition and don't mind waiting longer if I can get all the DLC.

If not I'll be fine buying the base game in the summer, but I was just curious. Google hasn't given me anything and I know for a fact that Transformers Devastation received no such thing.

Are we expecting the same text/voice language options in the retail release?

Will the NA version have Japanese voiceover?

Will the JP version have English text?

Not really no. MGR only had a re-release in Japan but other than that they haven't had a whole lot of DLC attached to their games.

PSN is mad slow so I can't download this (or SFV update).

Wow, this really sucked. You could literally not get hit by the boss if you just mashed the R2 button. Pretty funny when Platinum can't even make gameplay that's better than Cavia's.

Loved the design and the soundtrack though, but damn that combat was terrible.

That's up to the publisher, in this case Sqaure Enix. I think the only time they ever have done that were late PC ports and Next-Gen remasters.

I can't remember such a thing ever happening. Closest thing is the PC version of Metal Gear Rising that had all the DLC as standard.

I did not spend too much time with the demo but what I can say is is that the combat is definitely simpler than MGR, Bayonetta is on a whole other level. Just don't expect a typical character action game and you won't be disappointed.

But in what sense? MGR had blade mode cancel and directional modifiers to the moves, which seem to be missing here, but it didn't have real time weapon switch, different movesets for mapping weapons to different buttons, actually efficient and usable at any time bare fist combat, shooting, lasers, witch time and whatever other fuckery we'll unlock in the final game.

It's a really unoptimized strategy, though. Boring and a waste of time. A Saw Cleaver is much more efficient with the right setup and attack patterns.

Hate to be that guy, but if you're not a fan of "games that turn into shoot 'em ups" you should probably pass on this game.

The first Nier was, at it's core, an action-RPG/Bullet-Hell hybrid.

Actually, the first Nier had optional bullet hell elements. In that game you could just hold the block button and you wouldn't have to deal with it, where as in this one there is no block button and the bullets move a lot faster. It felt like in the first Nier they just used it because it looked cool.

Just played through the demo and while I enjoyed it I felt it focused far too much on ranged combat as opposed to the more involved and fun close combat mechanics...

Far too many scenarios in the demo seem to be built around a bullet hell shooter feel and you are for the most part asked to simply hold down the fire button and run around as the simplest most effective solution. This in particular held true during the boss fight which I unfortunately felt was quite unengaging and lacking in terms of enjoyment.

On the plus side I enjoyed the close combat mechanics even if the enemies felt a bit stupid so never felt I really needed to use the block/parry system but when I did go out of my way to stand there in front of enemies in order to have them attack me and parry before counter attacking it definitely looked/felt great.

Hoping the full game provides more of a focus on close combat and more mobile and aggressive enemies, plus much better boss fights.

Gravity Rush 2 and Tales of Berseria in January,
Nioh in February,
NieR in March,
Persona 5 in April,
And Ni No Kuni 2, Zelda BotW, Dragon Quest 11, mayyybe FFVIIRemake.

This is literally the best time to be a fan of rpgs and japanese games in general.

Hell, GOTY 2017 is going to be a bloodbath.

You forgot kingdom hearts 2.8 in January too lol. Literally my work money is going to all these games.

So the combat is worse than Cavia's? How?

Crazy talk. Just by playing 2 minutes the combat was better than anything Cavia did IMO.
