Valkyria Chronicles Remaster |OT| One more time: You can do this. Trust in yourself!

Game was so frikin amazing that I platinumed it, bought VC2 on Vita and currently now playing through VC3 with the fan translation patch on the PSP.

I have to say, the original was so good that I didn't even think that the formula could be improved, but VC3 has somehow managed to improve nearly every mechanic introduced in the original. The story and characters are also amazing. I'm at one of the early chapters
(so not really spoilers) where I cross paths with the characters from the original game and man does it feel so nostalgic seeing Welkin talk about beetles and Alicia trying to get him back to Earth.
Great stuff.

Oh my god I *JUST* found out that you can save mid-battle?! After googling for some tips. Yeah I feel dumb now. I just assumed it was like FF Tactics where you can't. Whelp, that's what I get for assuming. I could have saved myself so many hours already. Seems easy to exploit.

This game is so addicting. It's totally scratching my lack-of-new-FFT games itch. Will be playing the whole series after this.

Unlocking someone's hidden potential is easy:
-skirmish 1 easy
-kill one of your own teammates (have Rosie empty a clip on a sniper)
-have the person who's potential you wanna unlock revive them
-clear level and go to Ellet so she mentions the rising stars of squad 7

Will use this, thanks

That is actually very bad advice. Your allies are programmed to have a 90% dodge rate against friendly fire.

The best way to unlock hidden potentials is just to play through NG+ with characters you didn't use before, since you need to beat NG+ to unlock an achievement anyway.

That's why you do it from behind. Dodges can still happen but I can only think of like 3 while getting the potentials for the remainder of mu squad this way near the end of my first playthrough. Especially since I wanted to unlock Lynn early, and got that other sniper at the same time, while also perma killing a unit who had theirs unlocked so I could get Audrey sooner.

Huh, that's true... if you really wanted to get those hidden units as quickly as possible.

All right friendly fire away everyone. lol

Not sure how many people here are interested in things like collectibles, figures and statues, but there's currently a post on First 4 Figures' Collector's Club drumming up support for an Edelweiss figure/statue.

Not only that, but it's actually getting good traction.

The group is pretty quick at letting people in, so if you'd like to one day be able to purchase a pre-painted Edelweiss polystone figure/statue, make sure you stop by and drop a like/comment - let them know you're interested.

Similar Pieces by F4F: (12" Long, 17" Tall, and 18" wide respectively.)

... I may or may not really want one.

(Two months isn't that bad of a necrobump, right?)

I found the EU edition for around ~10€, should I get it? Is it a good game and how hard/long it is? I don't have a particular experience with the genre, other than the Fire Emblem games.

You're probably not going to find many people objecting to buying it in the OT. :p

I'd say sure, there are no other games like it, on the PS4 especially.

True that, I'm more interested in the other questions. I searched the thread a bit and I read some reviews and they're surprisingly positive, and I've already ordered it on that price anyway.

This game is hard, my teammates keep dying. Im on i think Chapter 3? Where the main guy gets the tank for the first time. I finally completed this mission, maybe im doing something wrong

In my honest opinion, Valkyria Chronicles is a classic JRPG with pick up and play strategy elements and a great mission based progression that's not overwhelming.

It is one of the stronger exclusives on PS4 (console) which is a testament to the quality of the game since it was released as a PS3 title like 10 years ago.

If you think the game is hard during what is still essentially the tutorial phase, you're are almost certainly doing something wrong, but without any specifics, giving any sort of advice is kind of difficult. Have you read all the hints that are either right in the OP or linked there?

The first real difficulty bump in the game is chapter 7.

Definitely a good game. The story is a good combination of the tragedies of war and some warm fuzzies, the music is good and the main cast is likeable. The difficulty generally ramps up at a decent pace, but there are some missions that are clearly more difficult than the ones before or even the few ones after it, with chapter 7 being the first, and generally the most infamous, real kind of "puzzle" mission where a first time blind completion is more or less impossible.

With all the DLC being available from the get-go and grinding being always an option to increase your chances, actually being stonewalled in the game isn't all that likely.

I just beat chapter 6, I think I like the game overall. I feel like it can become kind of unfair though. For instance, in the desert of ch. 6, I spent a lot of turns trying to take out the tanks in order to progress to the camp without getting KO'd. I cleared the lower area, I stationed several lancers and I drove the tank all the way to a place that I could launch attacks easily. When I progressed after a certain spot, the game notified me that there are sandstorms that make my troops harder to notice... It's a bit annoying that I died 4-5 times in order to make the planning perfect and then I realize there's something that would make everything easier...

Generally, it's a fun game though. I really like how unique the gameplay. It's pretty easy to understand and yet there are so many things you have to take into account. The positions, the surroundings, the personality quirks and so on. It's actually fun when I start a mission and then I realize I made mistakes and I can make an even better setup or I could prioritize different things and finish faster. There's a pretty surprising strategic depth to the game.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game.

I agree that it is a bit frustrating when new mechanics and stuff are introduced with very little introduction. I internally debate whether or not that's fun game design or not, and I think it's a bit back and forth. I can tell the developers didn't want the game to be purely mechanical, so they added unknowns into the fray for each mission. But it can be pretty frustrating when you lose a lot of time due to a misinterpretation.

When does the man in the cemetery teach Orders? I got one early in the game, but he doesn't let me learn anything now.

Also, Chapter 7 was... something. My first attempt was a massacre, people dying here and there and I had to give up near the end, but by the third attempt it was a piece of cake, there were even several turns with nothing to do with my troops, just waiting the huge tank to advance.

It's random when he decides to teach, and what he teaches you. As you beat missions his pool of random orders increases.

Don't worry too much about it; only Retreat and Awaken Potential are really useful, and even then they're not even close to necessary to win. Recon Request is only learnable in NG+.

You know what's bad, is that I sucked so bad that I couldn't beat the stage with the tank intro...

I would get wrecked each time and there was no way to hide my soldiers enough to get the tank over there to help.

That was a few months ago and I haven't bothered to try again since....

Wait, what? The one where you first encounter the Light imperial tank? But that phase of the chapter takes literally 2 or 3 moves to finish....

Or the one where Edelweiss rolls in for the first time? Cuz there the thing is to first move Alicia and the guards each once on the first turn, maybe shoot at some of the imps but more importantly, placing soldiers facing the enemy and taking cover behind the sandbags + Alicia up on the tower facing the enemy. That way they will intercept fire more or less everything minus the tank and you can skip turn 2 entirely, therefore saving enough CP to rolfstomp everything that is left with the Edelweiss when it arrives.

Get your game on, Cornito. I know you will love the story. 100% guaranteed.

Yeah, this one...

Oh, I can climb the tower? Damn, I kept trying to hide her behind the building, lying down and all over the place, but kept dying.... I might have to turn it back on and try that tonight, but I'm about 50 hours into Tales of Xillia 2 now, lol.

I'm currently on Ch. 14, the story had some interesting developments.
Not Isara, damn it. :( RIP.

After Ch. 6 and 7, I haven't found any mission that gave me trouble, I suppose that's a good thing. I think I've found a balance between grinding and progressing the story.

After 7 it was pretty much all downhill from there for me difficulty wise. But I had come across a few upgrades that made things much easier.

Go to the ladder on the tower, there should be a prompt to climb. Though if there's someone up there blocking the entrance, you'll have to get them out of the way first.

So I decided to try this out after buying it on Steam ages ago.

I was enjoying it, but got so frustrated at one op in particular
(the one where maximillian's tank is going through the desert and you have to shoot the vents. I spent like an hour on this one mission, the tank had one hit to go and managed to destroy my last base, while the woman with the laser lance wrecked my other troops.)
that I ended up hard quitting. Uninstalled and everything.

Probably worth noting I did the exact same thing with XCOM 2 earlier this year, hard quit, uninstalled. Basically I think it comes down to the RNG and the overall feeling of not knowing why I suck. With XCOM I just felt like I was always on the backfoot and couldn't get enough resources to upgrade my dudes so I was just always losing. Couple that with what felt like consistent bad luck and I was done. I wasn't having fun and there was no point continuing.

With Valkyria however, it felt like the game design was getting in the way too. Literally. Like I would take a shot at one of these exhaust thingies and it just didn't connect for no apparent reason. There was a brief cutscene where they mention the ladders you need to climb and as far as I could tell there was no reason to do that? Probably missed something there.

I guess I'm just venting, I don't often give up on games but I make exceptions when I feel like the fun to challenge ratio is off. Perhaps one day I'll come back to both games and finish them.

You can use
grenades to blow up the radiators in one shot.
There, now go back and enjoy a truly fantastic game. :p

Haha I should've known it was an infamously tricky chapter. Now I feel silly for not looking it up beforehand. New PS + games have just come in so those will probably keep me distracted for a bit...

Thanks though!

This game is one of those beautiful "thinking outside the box with your toybox of fun" games. Only once is it not be completely awesome freedom.

Finished the game earlier today. That was great. It's one of those games I, somehow, never heard but it was right up my alley. Surprisingly good and fun gameplay, decent story and a lot of content. Maybe I'll try to gather a few easy trophies I'm missing but I think I'm mostly done with it.

I found it funny that I only used Rosie to beat Maximilian. lol

Edit: Hmm, how do I play the DLC missions? Seems I have missed them...

You can play DLC missions anytime. You can hit up a button (I believe TAB?) to bring up the chapter select and you should be able to choose the Edy Squad missions. If you're talking about Hard EX, those are just picking the Skirmishes in question and selecting Expert.

If you're talking about the Selvaria missions, make sure you make a separate save before you launch it. It has to be launched from the main menu and if you save over your original save you lose everything.

Yes, the Selvaria missions. And thanks for the warning.

So I'm on my second playthrough and I noticed that 3 trophies I earned didn't pop. The Fouzan battle, killing 250/500 enemies. I got the 1000 one, so I'm guessing I didn't go see the queen right away or restarted the game after going to see her or something I dunno what happened, seems kinda impossible, but I have the medals in game, but not the trophies to back them up.

Anyone know how to fix this? Will they pop for example if I get 1250 and 1500 kills? It seems like I'll have to start all the way over, just to get those trophies which feels annoying as hell.

If I have the steam release is there any reason to really get the PS4 release? Is it significantly better? I started playing this a year ago and put it down halfway thru for reasons I can't understand and now I want to do a full play through.

I'm not big into emulators but how is PSP emulation doing today? I think is the only way I can play VC3.

Currently I'm 22 hours into first Valkyria on PS4 and the game is getting better and better. So charming and fun

Last I checked there are 2 maps with a Skybox issue in VC2&3 on PPSSPP, but other than that I played them just fine to completion, even utilizing a 60FPS hack.

You can buy or use a PSP with custom firmware and purchase VC3 off PSN and play it the the English patch. That's how I played it.

Played it about 2 years ago on PPSSPP, worked fine for me and I played through the entire campaign and of the extra stuff in the E2 version.

I haven't even finished a single play through yet because I got stuck, but I'm going to have to fix that soon, lol.

So I got the PS4 steelbook on eBay today. Probably will play this while I wait for SE to fix XV, if at all. I haven't played the PS3 version, so extra yay for me. How is the story? I hear good/bad things about it on the internet.

I even found out this thing has an anime, hows that?

I'll just quote myself earlier from the thread.
Yes, the story is good. Not amazing, but it is not completely black and white, there are some twists to it, the characters are heartfelt and the story handles the war theme pretty well in general. There are some decidedly 'anime' moments to the game and the cheery little victory poses your troops do after mowing down enemies can be slightly jarring, but that is more about the dreaded ludonarrative dissonance than going against the story in general.

You can easily get the feels multiple times during the story, and the Behind Her Blue flame side story bit, if you have a tendency for feels.

As for the anime, its just not worth it. It isn't completely without merit, but I'd still call it just plain bad in general.

Thanks. I should like it. Its kinda weird though, a jrpg with this type of setting.

Also this is getting a spiritual successor too in 2017. New everything.
