There's actually footage of Scalebound out there that looks really freaking good.

The last E3 demo was a total disaster, but this game certainly had potential.

People can blame Spencer all they want for this, but I think people just need to realize that this is just state of the Xbox brand right now.

as far as IP and future properties go it does look a bit bleak. But look at the situation. They aren't the market leader anymore and they aren't even leading in their key territory of NA. They clearly don't have unrelated access to the war chest anymore. They have no leverage when it comes to 3rd party deals or 3rd party exclusives.

Until they show otherwise expect MS to double down on their key franchises. I doubt they'll be taking risks.

More stuff has been closed down or canceled under Spencer than Mattrick lol.

This thread man.

One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other unless you can cite evidence proving otherwise.

The fear mongering and shit posting in this thread hurts my head.

Kamiya is taking time off due to mental issues and everyone's most thought provoking response is "thanks Spencer" or "rip Microsoft lol"

I actually think MS is throwing a signifant amount behind Scorpio and a lot new games will be released at launch or after, maybe not a lot but quite a few exclusives I think will appear in the scorpios first year.

Can MS make at least one new successful and well developed new IP this generation? The only one I really enjoyed was Sunset Overdrive but that is owned by Insomniac, everything else like Ryse or Quantum Break are meh to okay and we have been waiting for this project for years.

Should we be cautious about sea of thieves as well?

Man, I was never excited for it but this is pretty saddening all the same. Lots of work from Platinum and excitement from fans lost just like that.

Hopefully Jeff grills Phil at E3 2017 about this like he's done before

Halo is a shadow of itself, and this is due to the insane competition in FPS games and the crazy change in what people want from shooters--- hero shooters are the big thing, and Halo isn't it. Every single kind of shooter is represented and Halo seems to have a fanbase consisting of huge fans who were teenagers when Halo 2 released.

Kids aren't playing Halo and there's no base for this IP without the diehard fans who are surely in their late 20s or 30s. Gears seems like It just doesn't have the traction for MP, probably because its a TPS.

Forza Horizon is great though.

Is there any reason MS has never focused on single player games? Sony seems to be KILLING that area and it seems super important

In fact, Im surprised how much of a flip it has been from last gen when Sony was clamouring for a big MP exclusive. Now it seems Sony is THE console for single player games, whereas MP is being dominated by third parties.

July 2015: "Those shits at MS...are they fucking with me?"

So, let's set a timeline HEAVY with speculation. Game was announced at E3 2014 without much notice. It skipped E3 2015, but showed up at Gamescom that year in August with an announcement of four-player co-op, which was shown off with a much rougher game in E3 2016's conference. The game was then cancelled soon after.

My guess is that, in July, Kamiya was told he had to rejigger the game into a four-player co-op thing. There were never any hints he wanted to make the game a Monster Hunter-like, but I am guessing people in charge of money were expecting him to do so. It gets announced, shown off, and the response is tepid. Changing tides at Microsoft, a desire to free up the UE4 team they put together to work with Kamiya, and being unhappy with the state of the game lead to it being cancelled.

If my guess is correct, that's really sad.

Is there any way they could've saved the project by letting Platinum design it for 1 player again instead of 4 co-op?

I wonder.

For goodness sake Phil.

I'm a massive Microsoft fan and I really wanted this.
I've had it pre-ordered for about 2 years - I've never done that before.

In situations like this I'd really appreciate it if we even got just a demo released to say "Yeah this is what we had."

that's not how game development works

you can't just "release" something mid development lol

Oh man what a shame. I was in game in Liverpool today buying doom and on the tv they were showing scalebound and it looked brilliant.

Maybe this could be a result of platinum seeming to be developing so many games simultaneously

Its entirely possible that Microsoft fucked Platinum over and given platinum's track record and Microsofts I'm going to side with Platinum in this one.

Actually now that I've thought of it.
Below also wasn't mentioned either.

Wonder if that is canned as well, or just still in development hell. Although I guess that isn't triple A.
I keep forgetting SoD2 is triple A but I just can't take it out of my mind that it's an indie game.

Maybe SoD2 will be bigger than I think.
Below isn't Microsoft

Wait I might be thinking of a different game?

I'd at least expect them to not treat their cancellation announcement for an incredibly anticipated game like an advertisement for other games.

"We've got a game for people who don't get Scalebound, it's called Halo Wars 2"

It wasn't incredibly anticipated and it's best to divert attention to other titles.

Don't kid yourself. There won't be quite a few "exclusives" for Scorpio in the first year. Not even close. Unless Microsoft spends the entire year rereleasing existing titles and calling them "exclusives".

i was just thinking about it yesterday and how bad it looked but never i would have expected it to be cancelled, this stressed Kamiya news too... hope he gets better and his next project ends up being better.

So what is the appeal of Scorpio? 3rd Parties? Whats the point of having power if you got no games to showcase it. This is why Scorpio will do absolutely nothing to Sony and will be nothing more than an overhyped console with no games.

So at what point did Scalebound go from being a game about a guy and his dragon destroying stuff to a 4 player co-op game?

Could that have been the thing that caused development problems and lead to this end?

Whoa, sorry to hear that.

I'm glad I abandoned the sinking ship that is Xbox. Loved the 360 and owned the Xbox One (twice in fact) then realized I could just play any exclusive MS had left on PC and said F it. It's a shame really. What is Spencer doing over at MS?

What games do they even have left to release?

I don't think Kamiya is the easiest guy to work with. He's a rebel to the point of parody. He's made his thoughts about "the suits" and focus-tested game design clear numerous times.

If even a quarter of the things we hear about Microsoft's style are true, then I imagine their relationship was terrible. Hope Kamiya bounces back with all the fire he normally has, and hope that neither company is hit too hard.

They were given 3 years developement and weren't likely to hit this year and MS is to blame? I love Bayonetta as much as the next guy but I fail to see how this is on MS other than maybe showing the game too early.

I may be misremembering or mashing unrelated/unconfirmed things together, but I think I remember something along the lines of MS wanting to present Scalebound by having him go all the way to Gamescom just to say a few lines and introduce a video for the game, when he wanted to present actual, live gameplay, as played by himself. (The latter being what happened.)

I seem to remember him being upset at the idea of being on-stage as an MS prop.

I do know that he commented on Scalebound being the only game he worked on where he didn't choose the title. MS chose it. And he was also annoyed at the promo art for the game at E3 2014, which was also their decision. Beyond that we don't officially know how much MS got involved in the game creatively, but it sounds like they didn't have complete freedom at all times.
