Picked this up back in December (with ME:A) with the Visa checkout deal, so I was really hoping for positive scores. This is great.

Also, 100% agree with above; a 5/5 from Jeff is big. I know he comes across more as jaded sometimes than other outlets, but I appreciate his somewhat more critical attitude. If he thinks this highly, the game is likely going to be right up my alley.

Another long dev game turn out well 4/4 now.

GG has been working on this game since 2011.

And they squeezed every ounce out of that time. It is absolutely gobsmacking and dripping with details I have never even seen in a game before.

Horizon Zero Dawn is disappointing. It has a story that I struggled to care about (complete with massive expository dumps—yay), a bland protagonist, and overtly repetitive and constraining missions that worked against its open world sensibilities. When Horizon Zero Dawn hit its rare strides—from its gloomy Cauldrons to traveling across its sprawling vistas—it only made me wish the rest of the game were as worthwhile.

A week before release means the Dev are really confident in their game and seeing those scores the devs were right..

lol, oh wow, I predicated 88, although this isn’t done reviewing, doesn’t it usually tally off at 90-100 critic scores? I think it may bump back to 89 or drop to 87 when it’s all said and done. I think I’m going to lean higher and say final will be 89.

Now, I hope my Nier prediction comes through as well. 90 on meta! I think people are sleeping on how good it will be.

No matter how great a game is, it's never going to please everyone. There will always be a few outlier reviews.

No matter how great a game is, it's never going to please everyone. Even the greatest games are going to have a few outlier reviews.

I know. Haha. It's okay.

All that matters to me is that I love this game and I'm glad it exists!

It emphasizes to me that fresh ideas for stories in AAA games still can be great!

It's not even that Giant Bomb gave it a 5/5. I remember Dan Ryckert giving Stardew Valley a well-deserved 5/5 last year. It's that Jeff Gerstmann himself gave it a 5/5 that made me take notice. One of the advantages of listening to someone who is highly critical and difficult to impress is that you immediately take notice when they start gushing over a game. It's what happened with Doom and Hitman last year for me. They weren't even on my radar until Giant Bomb started talking about how amazing they were.

Yep, same thing happened with Colin. He's very jaded and admits it, as he states ”we all just love everything and I think quality and games that specifically speak to me are getting lost". He says Horizon has to be up there with TLOU as Sony's best first party franchise. High praise indeed. And seriously, Polygon's 9.5 is absolutely crazy, they have very very non-mainstream reivewers over there, and really love the game. I like the fact that the deeper you go into the quest and side story, the more impressive the lore gets, it's something that was good about Killzone, but never executed into the main narrative. GG has finally gotten both right.
