Blaster Master Zero - Switch (debut trailer)

I loved Blaster Master!

I even had that Nintendo story book with it.

This looks so good. Bit amazed Sunsoft still exist.

Few franchises get me hyped like Blaster Master, which is ironic because most of the games in the series aren't worth talking about (I _WILL_ defend Blasting Again for the PS1, if just for the music). I used to have dreams that there was a new Blaster Master for the DS and it looked a lot like what Zero is turning out to me, it's really messing with me. I would pay double the price to have it right now.

(Port beggers to the back of the bus)

what's the story with the vehicle, who's the real owner of it?

In the US version of the original, it was never explained. The Worlds of Power novelization gave it to Eve. Since they're keeping some ideas from that continuity, it'll probably be the same but... who knows?

Isn't Milestone Inc. closed (according to Wikipedia)?

Grrr, you're right. Shoulda remembered there not being a different MS shooter announced every month for years now. Shot down.

I remember there being another Compile spin-off company being talked about recently, Masamitsu Niitani's Compile-O, but I think they're small and will only make puzzlers.

Either way, nobody I know if is in the TGL business these days.

(I _WILL_ defend Blasting Again for the PS1, if just for the music).

Just for the music is just fine.

Holy Shit, did not know this game existed as I was a huge fan of the original game on the NES, now I'm seriously considering the Switch. If I can find one.

Ooh, I will definitely pick this up for the 3DS. I don't hear the iconic music; did they not get the rights?

How was the Wiiware Blaster Master?

Fun but very low-budget and the sideways-wiimote control scheme is cumbersome.

I will be getting this as soon as it is released. I am also hearing it has co-op? I wonder if that is online co-op. Anyone know?

It's local co-op, only on Switch. The second player interacts by moving a reticle around the screen, similar to the co-op mode in Super Mario Galaxy.

I'm mostly sure 3DS version won't be full 3D (maybe just some menus and UI stuff) which is extremely disappointing and lame, when they first announced the game they made sure not to mention it - and Inti Creates other 3DS game (volt or whatever) only does it that way sadly. I'll be holding out hope and likely buy it anyway as well but sigh.. they can't all be M2

The issue with stereo 3D in a game like this is that the sprite-based overhead perspective is drawn in a lot of odd ways to imply 3D depth that look really unnatural when you add actual 3D.

*RANT/SIDE-NOTE*
Indies have tried a few times to do The Guardian Legend (and WayForward once tried to make a game influenced by TGL) and all have failed to bring the Guardian back.

Not sure if there's a license/rights issue or if the brand holders just aren't interested, but it'd make me so happy if Compile's shooter brands some day made a return the way say River City/Kunio-kun has blissfully been resurrected.

Tragic. Guardian Legend is absolutely my favorite game ever, but it's never been rescued/remade. Apparently Milestone Inc. holds some the remnants of the SHMUP side of TGL developer Compile (every game made by the other Compile offshoot, Compile Heart, breaks my spirits a little bit), but they've never really made a Guardian Legend / Aleste / MUSHA / ZANAC type of shooter to my knowledge. (I'm mostly familiar with MileStone for its bullet-hell games, which are interesting as SHMUPs but the Compile-style of challenge and enemy design was special and I really wish they could explore it some time, if not fully invest in a shooter/adventure game again some day to rival/revive The Guardian Legend.

Blaster Master gives us all hope.

The closest direct successor to Compile when it comes to shmups was Raizing/8ing--a lot of the people behind the later Aleste and Spriggan games went there and their Mahou Daisakusen series is very much in the vein of those games.

The team that became Milestone was mostly newer Compile people, but that team is also dead--the company died, their IP and dev team were acquired by another company and were later shut down after not doing a whole lot.

The Guardian Legend is the murkiest of Compile's old shmups, rights-wise: it was never published by Compile and had a different publisher in every region (including Nintendo in Europe) so nobody wants to open that can of worms.

The Aleste series is slowly but surely being consolidated.

One of my earliest NES memories was Christmas and I was like 6 getting Blaster Master so no doubt a 100% purchase for me!

Might need to stop sniffing glue
Now if we could only revive some old school game names like TMNT (8-bit), Ninja Gaiden (8-bit), Contra, Double Dragon.. etc.

Sold me on switch as soon as I saw the trailer today.

So many memories... I will be buying this ASAP when I get my hands on one.

On the Wii, I bought the Opera Browser when it was available for sale. Then Nintendo made Opera free and offered everyone who bought it a free NES game. I wasn't sure what game to get (I played a lot of the NES library already) but ultimately decided to go for Blaster Master, a game I never played but always heard so much about.

Turned out to be a very good choice - I loved Blaster Master. I didn't quite beat it because I got to my last continue and didn't want to lose all my hard-earned progress, but it was such an amazing game. It held up over the years extremely well, much more so than I would have expected for a game from that era.

As a result, this new game is an easy Day 1 purchase for me. (But to be honest, I love Inti and might have picked it up regardless of if I played the original, lol.)

I'm going to buy this and I hope it's good, but I don't really trust Inti-Creates much anymore. They went from MMZ games and MM9-10, which were really tight and fun, to stuff like MM ZX and Advent which were messy and kinda lame, to Gun Volt which was just awful, and then that weird creeper shooter game with high school girls, and then MN9 disappointed everyone, and Gun Volt 2 was more lame Gun Volt... I dunno about this dev anymore.

Just received confirmation from Matt Papa that both the US and Japanese releases have language selection options. So even though there is not much of a wait between the JP release on March 3 and the US one the following week, those who simply can't wait will have the full experience right on launch day.

I am cautiously optimistic as well. I will probably wait for reviews before grabbing it.

Actually, there was a game like it on the Genesis. I don't remember the name, but it used the 6-button controller. Like, the top three were for your guy, the bottom 3 were for your tank. Anyone remember the name of that game? It was really fun.

Yeah, while I'm definitely buying this, I'm very, very skeptical.

the MMZ games are nowhere near the quality of the MMX games. MM 9&10 are exceptional.

Isn't that some mutant lab experiment? Who cares what it looks like. It's still not as offense to the senses.

Depends on which MMX

MMX1 is easily better. X2, Z2, and Z3 are probably all on par with each other (though I might give the edge to Z2 and 3). X3, 4, 5, and 8 are better than the other two Zs, which are better than X6.

Weird how Capcom didn't make an X7.

Ha, I loved Blaster Master back in the day. Hard as hell, don't think I ever beat it legitimately. Will get this since the price is right.

Part of the reason I loved the game so much was because of this bad boy right here:

As a kid I loved this book. Also really enjoyed the Metal Gear one a lot.

There was a contra last gen and double dragon iv last month...

There were two retro-style Contras last gen; Contra 4 for DS and Contra Rebirth for WiiWare. There was also Hard Corps Uprising for XBLA/PSN which is a mega-anime prequel to Contra Hard Corps.

I owned this book. You just brought back a memory that had been lost for decades. Wow. Very cool!

Okay, I will disagree with these opinions. ZX Advent is one of my favorite Mega Man games, and I really enjoyed Gunvolt. It has a few problems, but Gunvolt is really fun to control.

You also messed up your chronology: MM 9 and 10 were made after ZX and ZX Advent. Mighty No 9 was a disappointment, sure, but I think Comcept deserves a huge chunk of the blame on that one.
