Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

This isn't going to be running new AAA games at native 4k 60fps.

Maybe first party games tho.

I mean.... when people quote their PC performance, they're always talking about ultra(ish) settings. Consoles do not run games at those settings though. They're always turned down quite a bit.

XBox One game are already running at settings lower than PS4 most of the time. At those settings + 6TF.... I dunno. Maybe I can see 4K\60 happening in recent titles. Maybe.

The GRASS WARS: PART DEUX will start with Red Dead Redemption 2 as lines will be drawn in the sand, the battle will be waged as Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Pro face off against PC. Which version will have more bushes, will there be a discernible difference? Tune in to find out more.

When it comes down to it this is all pretty much how it should have been expected. The PS4 Pro and Scropio arnt machines designed to tempt one side to the other but for the enthusiast gamers of each respective platform to get a more powerful version of.

You like Xbox but want 4k and better performance you get scorpio.

You like Playstions platform but want 4k and better performance you get PS4 Pro.

Its good both options will exist. Whats really intersting is what happens in 3 years or so. Another mid jump or a brand new gen? Was this simply to help with the rise of 4k or is this a plan going forwards? Thats whats interesting to me.

If I had gone with xbox this gen like I did last I would be absolutely getting this. However I went sony so I got a Pro. Tech wise this was interesting but I wont be getting one. Pretty sure most people wont be able to notice much difference between PS4 Pro and Scorpio versions of games in the same way I bet most people dont notice the difference between Xbox One and PS4 games. The difference will be there but without having it pointed out I will be surprise if its remotely obvious. However a 4k solution with other improvements on both sides of the fence is great.

DF clearly was very impressed and surprised with their findings but overall this is still kinda what we expected, is it not? I mean the power difference compared to PS4 Pro. Or have the expectations een exceeded? And of course it always remains to be seen how significant the differences are going to be between multiplats on both systems. Will it be a X1 versus PS4 situation or a bigger gap i wonder?

But with $499 being the suggested price is too high for me (college student and all that). But this line from the Xbox team gives me a little hope for $399

So we'll see but I'm not hopeful. I'll probably end up waiting for 2018 and picking one up before Halo 6. Also might be a good graduation present to myself lol

Reminder that the X1 launched at $499, so MS clearly think it's a consumer-friendly price.

Basically an Xbox One.5 as most of us expected. Totally down for that just as long as they keep the price reasonable.

$400 or below would be ideal to at least compete with the PS4 Pro, but I have a feeling it may be higher than that.

How in the hell are people expecting this to retail at 499? It's pretty much exactly aligning with the predictions made beforehand.

They are hitting 399, don't be silly. There's a reason Jaguar/Polaris is in there.
Absolutely. But judging by some posts in this thread, it seem that people want to spend more money on this console which is strange af lol.

MS knows what they're doing with the Scorpio. They'll price it to sell.

GAF is decidedly Sonyland.

With everything accounted for, it's a 50% increase over the PS4 Pro.

Its a 10 % increase, 2.1 to 2.3 is what exactly ?

4K is nice, I have a pro and 4K set, but I would of killed for a console that could do 1080p60 on Witcher 3 for example.

LOL at few posts above.... the grass will look nicer LMAO

Roll on 2018.....

As expected the PS fans in here with XBOX has no games and PCGAF in here like locusts evangelizing their rigs.

Can't we have anything nice? LOL

Only slight more powerful!! After that impressive video thats what they took away from it? And even that is utterly false.

Its a significant leap - DF have said that this level of craftsmanship has put them firmly back as the leaders of hardware, and that doesnt mean building with more powerful parts.

The dedicated DX12 hardware seems fishy to me. What extra overhead did the DX12 API have before adding dedicated hardware?

The console seems to be pretty much what I expected in terms of specs, but how Microsoft delivered it is pretty surprising.

I'm very curious about how many titles can actually achieve native 4K at a stable 60fps . 4K30fps I have no problem seeing though.

The DX12 piece seems like marketing speak to me. As in "supercharged PC architecture" and "power of the cloud".

People read the specs and had been hoping for:

In reading the specs, I read cooler, better clocks, more mhz, more RAM and think, yeah, that should be a pretty decent difference, but not the monster people envisioned. it will be an impressive console for sure. People need video proof of games in motion in 4K before they ooh and ahhh. It's a HUGE improvement over the Xbox One S. it's a good improvement over the competition. 1 Year later and at unknown price difference.

Obviously it was an unrealistic expectation, but part of me was hoping Microsoft would brute force performance improvements with new tech and not by Macgyvering existing. So my main disappointment is with the CPU, the 60fps dream is in jeopardy as it sounds like the improvements are restricted to DX12 enabled titles.

I guess ultimately, we'll just have to see how effective the secret sauce is.

Sounds like an awesome piece of hardware. Just give me games I can't play on my PC or PS4 PRO and you've got my money, Microsoft.

How accurate is it to say Scorpio > Pro is roughly equivalent to OG PS4 > OG XB1?

pretty accurate since it's about 40% better in both cases.

Just look at the visual differences between og ps4 and xbo then you'll see the same differences on the Scorpio/Pro.

The part about the settings is not even true. The vast vast majority of multi plays is running the same quality just with the Xbox running at a lower resolution.

Thread is huge so no idea what the overall impressions here are, but just watched the video and good lord. This thing sounds amazing. Day freaking 1

It looks like a fantastic, well thought out Xbox One. All my old peripherals work and games work the same or better. I don't have to worry about downgraded visuals or performance compared to even the base PS4 if I choose to go with an Xbox version of a multi-platform game. I'm satisfied with that.

I think if people weren't satisfied by this, their expectations were not in line with the 6TF machine Microsoft said it would be, and/or never were interested to begin with.

Damn it, for the first time ever I went down to a single console (Sold WiiU and XB1) and settled with the PS4 Pro content in that I finally shed myself of the need to own every condole.

Day 1, looks amazing

Sounds very impressive. A bit of a non-factor for me though, since I'll probably just ride out the PS4 Pro era and stop gaming soon enough. Still curious to see what kind of games will be released on this and properly take advantage of the system.

The meh isn't because of hardware. It's due to Xbox's recent software output.

While I probably wont get one because I dislike the break in the console cycles and officially wait for the next generation to start what worries me is Micrsofts in relation to software. A few of their new franchises are dead in the water, and I am just wondering whats a new IP that could drive me to get one. Halo and Gears just doesnt do it for me anymore.

Will all their games look pretty sure, but I need some killer IP's

Seems powerful. Unfortunately, games like Nier, Nioh, Persona 5, and Horizon don't exist on XO, so it's hard to get excited. Also there's no evidence they'll start getting that type of game.

I also have a PC.

I'm surprised that there is good amount of "meh" in this thread. This console has the best spec to date and very impressive, and as gamers, this should be exciting news.

I can imagine that has to do with the fact that for a significant amount of people, they already have the capability to play xbox one in 4K. I mean, if you have a high-end PC, then the scorpio hardly offers something to be really excited about.

.

Where in the hell are you getting a 10% increase.

4.2 TF GPU to 6 TF. 8GB RAM to 12GB RAM. Faster RAM speeds. Improved CPU

I mean, Scorpio is significantly more powerful than the Pro is. That's just the truth of the matter.

If RDR2 is anywhere near the environmental complexity of GTAV, there's no way that Scorpio will run it at native 4k without significant compromise in other areas of visual fidelity. .

If it runs I an Xbox One at 900/1080p then it will able be 4K native on Scorpio. That's the whole point.

I'm pretty sure I don't need one,but if I have a launch Xbox one and PC 6700k/1070 I'm good right? Looks interesting for sure..Prbly still end up with one.
