Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

It is almost exactly what I expected it to be a year ago. Which is, a PS4 Pro + a year + $.

And that is exactly what everyone should have expected. No one should be disappointed here, MS has produced exactly the product they should and could have.

And, most importantly, said they were going to. People believing this was ever going to be more than what MS & Co. have continually insisted on were setting everyone up for disappointment.

If the tools remain easy to port games and enhance them, this will be a great addition to the competitive nature of the console market in general.

My opinion as an owner of all major consoles/PC:
With one of the best controllers in the market today, an OS that is constantly getting updated and faster, backwards compatibility built-in diversifying your library and what looks like now more impressive hardware to give developers a way to show off their games in remarkable/amazing ways, linked with cross-play games for consumers that use it for gaming across two different platforms - all this should build consumer confidence in the XBOX brand in general, which has been lacking since Don "I murder products" Mattrick almost buried it in the landfill with all the ET cartridges.

I'm very glad Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are each succeeding positively in different ways. Great for us, great for business and great for competition. E3 is going to be a blast either way you look at it.

Really surprised at the custom dx12 hardware accompanying the jaguar CPU though we really shouldn't be. The 360 showed how in dept MS can work with its partners when it comes to creating custom chip enhancements

Because it's one less reason to own an Xbox. I agree with you, but if I had a decent PC then I wouldn't need to own an Xbox, and in a console-reveal(ish) thread it's a pretty major talking point.
I'm hoping they don't abandon play anywhere. It's one of the best things MS has done. As it means we don't have to wait for patches, or remasters. We can eventually get a beefier pc, and play our favorite Xbox games at better quality.

DF clearly was very impressed and surprised with their findings but overall this is still kinda what we expected, is it not? I mean the power difference compared to PS4 Pro. Or have the expectations een exceeded? And of course it always remains to be seen how significant the differences are going to be between multiplats on both systems. Will it be a X1 versus PS4 situation or a bigger gap i wonder?

It is exactly as a reasonable person would have expected. We knew 90% of this going into today. This just filled in the CPU question and the specific enhancements that they added as per usual in the console hardware development.

I feel like just releasing specs was a bad idea. They should've held a mini conference and showed off some new titles that take advantage of Scopio.

Right now it's hard to excited about playing Forza/Gears/Halo at a higher resolution.

New game annoucments would have helped.
New game announcements is what E3 is for.

4k vs 4k checkerboard rendering is the 2018 sequel of 2014s 1080p vs 900p debate.

In computing, faking it is just as good as making it. Sometimes faking it is even better because you can use the resources elsewhere.

Sorry, this is nonsense. GAF leaned 360 and now it leans PS4. And that reflects the world outside of GAF. It isn't because of fanboys but due to Sony screwing up last gen and Microsoft screwing up this gen.
I respectfully disagree with your opinion. As stated, just read this thread. Better yet, read any thread with a positive MS topic.

But let's stay on topic in this thread. I started it so I'll get back on topic.

My problem is, will third parties take advantage of the boost.

Why the fuck do you want exclusives? Exclusives are bad.

I believe the point is that the poster wants to justify purchasing an Xbox console manufactured by MICROSOFT and would like them to publish their own games. Saying "not on PC or PS4 Pro" was redundant but it means the same thing.

The Jags we had were already customized.

Its a customised version of a customised version of the Jaguar.

And when the die shots come out, I can guarantee that they all look exactly the same....funny that isnt it.

Heavily customised is the new cloud PR term, Sony MS and Nintendo are all guilty.

Dont get me wrong,, Scorpio looks a great product and exactly what is possible with what is available today to console makers.

You all people worried about paying 499usd for a console and not batting an eye when getting a flagship phone for +699usd.

And don't get me started on those complaints "no ryzen no buy". OCed Jaguar is the only route.

Phones are much more integrated into our daily lives. And I find that as I get older, I tend to care more about my phone as I'm using it waaaay more often. Especially for the 2x 50 minute train rides to work and back. And taking pictures of my daughter and face-timing with her when I'm away. It also doubles as a mobile gaming machine. The list goes on and on.

So yeah, I would expect to pay more for a phone than a console at this stage in my life.

In the article, they state around the customisations around the core blocks and then say "this is without the fixed hardware for DX12". I'd argue that is, an actually customised CPU, rather than just a few tiny things and call it customised, but we'll wait and see.

I'd quote but blocked DF here.
Umm, ok. I was just saying the PS4 and XBO CPUs were also customized, when that poster claimed they weren't.

MS wants to hit around $399 but also as wants to net as much profit as is justifiable from consumers, so anything from $399-$499 wouldn't be a huge surprise to me with the MS tax. Depends on if they plan to be aggressive or to chip away.

MS has some obstacles including being late to the party and need to convince consumers with software/value if the price seems too high. I'm interested to see what their strategy is.

Obviously, Sony could counter by lowering PS4Pro if necessary, bundling, or standing pat depending on their strategy.

Dude, Gaf heavily leans Sony. No doubt about that. It's been said too many times. It's easy to see and read. Take this thread for instance.

GAF isn't 'Sonyland' - and the persecution complex some around here have is tiresome. Things seem more vocal when a company's product has sold (almost?) 60 million units and is outpacing the competition. It was the same when the 360 and Wii were kicking ass.

People that think folks are meh on this might not remember the Pro reveal/launch?

Pro got largely blasted on GAF. So it stands to reason that a mid-gen refresh that largely reflects specs a year later would be met with the same reception.

But no, that can't be it!

Yeah definitely. I don't have a gaming PC but I think it's a great initiative. It's just a shame for MS that it kinda undermines the Xbox at the same time.

Calculate everything. Speed too, not just the amount.

Oh ok. RAM speeds ain't gonna do much for game performances, might be wrong though. At least it didn't do anything for my PC when I upgraded from 667 MHZ to 2667 MHz.

That's not how math works. Scorpio has 50% more Ram. If you want to say 33%, then it's that the PS4 Pro has 33% less ram.

It's a 50% increase. This isn't difficult.

I see.

So the gap between the Scorpio and pro should be similar to the gap between ps4, and ps4 pro.
is that correct?

Hell no, it's a bit higher than the relative gap between current Xbox One and PS4.
Scorpio is what the PS4 Pro would have been with an extra year of technical advancements. That's not a big surprise considering that they're both systems made with AMD tech.
If you look at the specs most of the power delta is actually due to higher clocks and not to extra compute units.

It may be close, but we are no longer talking about 720p-900p vs 1080p with higher quality effects. Where talking native 4k vs check oats 4k. Maybe higher quality shadows vs ultra quality shadows. So while power maybe more, it not like the pro can't do basically a high quality version of everything the scropio can do.

The Mass effect comparisons with pro vs nvidia 1080 at 4k are good example of what to expect. It's going to be hard to see a difference.
Dude the Scorpio have an OCRX480... And Jag cores... Is better to be more realistic here.

I asked a few pages back but it got buried:

MS is saying this thing has FreeSync yet it's HDMI 2.0. Since when is 2.0 FreeSync capable? I thought that was the big addition coming in 2.1??

You must not have been around during the early PS3 days. :p

Yes and that was what, almost 9 years ago? Anyway I'd say gaf isn't Sony centric as much as it is Japan centric. Saying gaf is Sony land ignores the vast swath of Nintendo fans here. Xbox and by some extension PC fans here are definitely in the minority.

$499 is a perfectly reasonable price for hardware like this, but it won't turn any heads at that price. The core Xbox fans will buy it all day long but that's about it. If they want to pick up any fence sitters it needs to be $399. The build cost shouldn't be hugely different than the launch XB1 so I don't think it's impossible. It's just 4 more RAM modules and a few other bits, nothing major. Probably roughly break even at that price which is not ideal, but hey that's consoles and the audience for you.

If it is $499 then I think it needs a sweetener, like an Elite controller packed in or something like that.

The Jags we had were already customized.

And jags aren't even suppose to get to 2.3ghz

It's not a simple jaguar cores in this. They clearly said they spent a lot of time customizing the CPU with AMD. Or else not much work needed if just using Pro CPU

If the PS4 Pro has 8 GB RAM and Scorpio has 12 GB RAM, isn't it more like 33% more RAM?

If it's $400, I'll definitely debate getting one pending GameStop trade-in values for my OG Xbox One.

But I'm still more excited for Volta cards at this point.

The bigger difference will be what Scorpio can do IN ADDITION to resolution. The RAM, memory bandwidth, and CPU power should make the gap even bigger than what we saw between XB1 and PS4.

XB1 had a better CPU than PS4 but PS4 had a considerable GPU boost. However, both consoles had the same RAM amount and similar memory speeds (although XB1's ESRAM kinda hurt it there).

This will be a big advantage for the Scorpio across the board. CPU, GPU, and memory.

His point is custom Jags as a concept isn't new. This has been the case since OG PS4/Xbox.

They have games coming. No need to start this shit again.

I dont get why people want this. That the games are coming on PC is great for overall gaming.

Some of you REALLY want to cut Mcicrosft games out of the PC for some reason...

Um... I feel that I was misunderstood.

I much prefer for games to be on all platforms that it can be. I've got quantum break and gears of war on pc. I dont want them to take them away. All I'm saying is that the only way I'll buy one is IF they have an exclusive I can't get anywhere else.

So agro, folks.

If you care about MS franchises (specifically multiplayer) then an xbox is totally worth it even if you have a PC.

Why the fuck would I want to play gears 4 on PC with no online population?

Devs will still have to make games with Xbox One in mind, so PS4 Pro, and Scorpio will add their touches to them. 4k, and added effects maybe, smoother framerate.

I expected this thing would be better on specs. It looks very close to PSPro and not over into next gen territory like some people assumed it could be. This is definitely current gen, and not a sneaky next gen step.
