Games you hated but completed nonetheless

Racking my brain to think of one, I don't do do stupid shit like beat games I don't like... closest might be Devil May Cry 2, which I played through and beat because of its pedigree. But the game wasn't bad enough for me to regret it.

Half Life 2
I hate it because it isn't Half Life 1.5. Problem is, I keep coming back to the damn game too.

Oh, and Halo ODST. That game was just boring.

Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword

Beat it 3 times, then got stuck in Master Ninja in Ch 9 I think. I probably wouldn't have hated it if I only had finished it once. Stupid me.

what's the point? beating a game that's not fun equates to wasting your time. i usually just quit and move on.

Hey, I can't hate on the game unless I finish it. However, FFXIII made me break that rule, I couldn't force myself through it this time. I also believed SE still had some magic left, but it was all lies. So many crappy FF's in a row has made me finally see the light.

While I certainly didn't hate all of it, there few a few parts in Alpha Protocol that I absolutely despised and I was dangerously close to giving up but I decided to soldier through anyway.

The annoying thing is that the worst parts of the game are in the second half, so basically I got to the point where I had invested enough time in it that I felt it would have been a waste if I didn't finish it.

Really, really did not like Alan Wake. Stupid story, horrible gameplay, lame design, everything sucked except for how it looked. It's so bad that I track the name of people on gaf who liked the game so I can always overlook their opinion on anything else.

Final Fantasy XII, Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, Resident Evil 5, Earthbound (not full on hate though).

There's probably more than I don't remember well enough to name.

Hate is a strong word, but I really struggled to finish Metal Gears Solid 2.
I loved the first game so much (one of my all time favourites), and I bought a PS2 and ZOE just so I could play the demo (which I also loved), but about 6 hours into MGS2 I couldn't believe how much I was disliking it.

I forced myself on out of pure love for the original, but my opinion of the series has never been the same since. The last 2 or 3 hours of the game/awful movie were horrible.

As far as I'm concerned Metal Gear Solid ended with 1, and 2/4 (3 doesn’t count since it's a prequel) are just some awful fan fiction that never actually happened lol.
I didn't make the same mistake with 4 and gave up after about 3 hours :lol

Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3. Currently playing Halo: Reach. I don't hate Reach as much as the other games though :D Abusive relationship. I even bought the cat helmet :(

Are you guys a bunch of masochists? Games are meant to be fun so if I dont like it, I dont play it.

Seriously, whats the reason for playing a game you dont like?

Well I tried Earthbound for the first time in 2006 and kept getting bored so I stopped. Picked it up and dropped it like 10 more times before finally forcing myself to finish it earlier this year. I just really don't like games with first person battle systems. Loved the music though.

Ico and SOTC just bored the hell out of me. Clunky controls and an art style that didn't appeal to me just made it hard for me to enjoy it.

FFXII was pretty terrible for me because it ended up being a total genre shift while I was expecting it to be a return to form after XI. Instead, I got a pseudo offline MMO with a boring story, crappy characters and annoying dialogue all done by my least favorite major Square employee at the time. It was so bad that I was in denial, not wanting to believe that FF was no longer for me. I forced myself to play it for more than 100 hours which only made my opinion of it and Square worse. Fortunately, they have been able to salvage their reputation for me with XIII but I'm still very disappointed in them.

I normally put aside the games I don't like. Even the ones I do like get boring after a few hours, and they're either put aside or traded in. So up until today, I've never felt compelled to finish a game I didn't like, such as ODST.

that's why I made this thread. I wanted to know "whyyyyy??". For me it was sort of irrational impulse, so I wanted to know other people's motivation to do such stupid thing.

Borderlands, I found it boring and repetitive but not so bad until I finished the game... then it was just "That's all?! Man fuck this shit."

Halo 3 singleplayer

The trailers had me hyped, I expected an epic game... but it was such a boring drag from start to finish. With Reach they finally managed to create a great experience and ODST was pretty good as well.

Sonic and the Black Knight

NEVER AGAIN

I could dig up a bunch more but I don't think I want to. Also some games are just forgettable, I finished the Battlefield BC2 campaign and I have a hard time remembering what the game was about. :lol

Super Paper Mario... ah shit here we go again

Normally it's "Well I bought/rent/borrowed it so I might as well finish it while I have it."

Halo 3 for me.
Played through on Heroic solo.
On about the 3rd mission, I got stuck for a long ass time... but I somehow went back and finished the game.

If I ever finish Mercenaries 2, you can add it to this list.

FFXIII, ICO(I liked SotC mind you), ZOE1(played it because I thought it would be like ZOE2), ODST(was able to complete it because of co-op). The Last Remnant PC(For some reason I really wanted to see the ending).

Saga Frontier and Suikoden 4.

Saga Frontier - This game came out in the period when almost everything Squaresoft in the US was gold. I kept playing it in the vain hope that the game was going to suddenly turn awesome :lol . Also, I was not an adult at the time, so I couldn't afford to buy many games each year, so I had to make do with what I had.

Suikoden 4 - Because I was a fan of the series and wanted to see whether the events had any bearing on the rest of the game world. Also the Ted cameo. It wasn't worth it.

I couldn't play a game all the way through if I hated it but there are plenty of times where I wanted a game to end before it actually did. Bioshock and God of War come to mind. They blew their load early, so to speak.

Far Cry 2

I kept on playing because I was expecting that money shot that unfortunately never came
I'm convinced that recommending Far Cry 2 is a form of hazing.

ODST. Half of my hatred is probably at how short and devoid of content it was though.
Fallout 3. Actually have played through this twice trying to figure out what people see in it.

Rogue Galaxy. Such an unbalanced and generally unfun game.

  • Shallow combat system where you can potion spam yourself out of any situation
  • Far too long dungeons with bland and repetitive level design
  • Atrocious storyline
I learned my lesson though. I am never touching a Level 5 RPG again.

I just like to think there is a better game I should be playing and not to waste my time.

Normally when I'm finished playing a game I don't often go back (only in a few cases, Okami, SoTC/ICO, Xenosaga...etc) but like Mass Effect, once I was done everything I wanted to do I shelved it. So when I get a new game that's generally the only one I'm going to play, aside from a few MP games that I only play with friends like CoD or Halo.

Exactly :(

I enjoyed the post-end content more than rest of the game though. Kind of felt like beating the game wasn't a total waste. Can't see myself playing the sequel though.

RoboPlato

I'd be in the dick
Mirror's Edge for me as well.

I have never been so frustrated with a game on normal difficulty as that one. It had brief moments of greatness so I finished it to see if it those would become more common but I was angry most of the time. I couldn't play for too long in one sitting so it took me two weeks to finish the four hour long game.

I loved Fallout 3 and still haven't played through it twice... That game is at least 50+ hours long!! I don't understand you at all.
