Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

I think the problem is that they'd probably only have discounts/drops on the One S lineup. Has the PS4 Pro had any sort of widespread discount since its launch?

Don't think so, and there's no reason to believe it'll get one if this is true. Sony must be pretty happy.

Almost feel like he's trolling just so people are then surprised by the $399 price tag.

Don't mind if i'm wrong though.

Makes sense to me. What I figured all along.

Just hope it's as premium as they say. I want the best.

Ouch. This price is going to be terrible, especially for people in Canada.

I pray to god that this isn't the final price.

i was expecting $600-700.

To see people saying DOA at 499 confuses me.

This is a high end console with brand state of the art technology. If this thing costs 499 it`s a steal.
Nah it's not. It's been nearly 4 years since PS4 and Xbox One was released. Tech becomes cheaper it doesn't stagnate in price. It should've been $399 although I expected $499.

I think Microsoft leaked this on purpose to be honest. So the $399 price is a bigger mic drop moment.

No way after all those leaks they're gonna be $499. Why would they tease those images then? Who would buy a mid gen refresh for $499 man.
This makes a lot of sense if true.

And with the way they are marketing Scorpio, I find this very very plausible.

This is bad if true. If Sony cut the price of the Pro then it's going to be even worse. If it had its very own exclusive games, which really used all of that power, then they would have something to show that makes it obviously worth that extra cash.

However they're going to seriously struggle to convince people that native 4k is worth a difference of potentially over £100 when compared to 4k using checkerboarding. Unless games get given a monumental upgrade by developers, which seems unlikely unless MS have done a specific deal or it's a 1st party game, of which there aren't many, I predeict the difference between Pro titles and Scorpio titles to be relatively small in the eyes of most consumers. This means a price point which is potentially £100 more or even greater than PS4 pro is going to cause issues. If buying a brand new system they're gonna have 4 choices - a PS4 Slim or Xbox One S for essentially the same amount of money, a PS4 Pro for a bit more and some graphical boosts or a Scorpio for quite a lot more and some small graphical boosts over the Pro.

At this price I feel it's going to need exclusive games which can't be done on XB1 for people to think it's worth it. Trouble is, unless MS do a U turn, that isn't going to happen.

I can't believe it.

Maybe the the 2TB $499 SKU will ship first followed by the 1TB $399 SKU in a month.

This would be an insane decision to make.

It's got Jaguar and Polaris. There's nothing inside the Xbox One Scorpio that would justify a price that high.

I think most of us originally predicted that would be the case when Project Scorpio was announced last year (I know that I did), the closer we've been getting to E3, it really seemed like this thing was going to cost $399, though.

I don't believe this, personally. I'm still firmly in the $399 camp. If it does turn out to be $499... Enjoy third place, Microsoft.

I'm on team Don't Believe

Really random he would throw this out there (especially with the "unless something changes today) Seems like setting up for the megaton of matching the price of the competitor's worse device

This thing is DEAD in Canada.

Yep if 499 USD that's at least 599 CAD if not more.

The stupid thing is that Microsoft is the company that should be most easily able to absorb costs to cut the price down so if they don't it's completely on them if the price is really this bad.

Sony basically proved in 2013 and again in 2016 that $399 USD is the sweet spot.

How long are we away from another Xbox versus how much will that cost when it arrives? That's my concern. That's spending a couple hundred every 4 or so years for the same model, just to be outdated by a different model just a few years later.

I'd rather buy games than throw down $500 that I don't feel like I need to spend this far into the generation.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Sony goes for the jugular this holiday with a $50 price drop and a bundled copy of Horizon Zero Dawn and then another $50 off for the holiday months so the Pro is sitting around $300 from around Black Friday onwards and they will cut the legs out from MS if its $499.

If this is true then Sony should just put the final nail in the coffin and permanently price drop the PS4/PS4 Pro to $249/$349 respectively.

It will not do well at $499 without some sort of attractive trade in program.

They will need jaw dropping footage and new features to justify that cost stand alone.

On one hand. I want to think this is all some elaborate marketing stunt so we are all stunned when it's announced at $400.

That said. This is way too high imo.

Would not be surprised if that's what's happening. I feel like Geoff is too much of an industry insider to be stepping on the toes of MS and releasing their price earlier than they want.
