Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Money. Thats what he has to gain. Money, and he has been known to do stupid shit for it before.

Money from whom? Again, why would Microsoft PAY MONEY to a single person (how did they even land on Geoff, did they draw his name from a hat?) when they can just announce the $399 price at the conference and get the same positive reaction?

In order for $499 to be a decent price for Scorpio, it would need to include 2 out of 3 things below:

a) 2 TB HDD

b) bundled game, physical copy

c) 1-year sub to Xbox Live Gold.

My guess, it'll be $499 for 1tb and no game, MAYBE an XBL Gold voucher for 1 or 3 months, but the controller will be an Elite controller.

I recall a lot of people covering E3 in 2013 were certain PS4 would be $499 24 hours before it was surprisingly announced at $399. The euphoria over that price was significant. Curious if MS is trying to replicate that euphoria today or are prepping people so they aren't disappointed.

Thing is. There was months of speculation around that and with Sony having a history of pricing their console way too high.

This doesn't hold the same weight doing it just mere hours before the conference.

Most people were expecting between $400-$500 anyway.

Please be realistic.

Really intrigued about the MS conference now, if only to see if the leak is true

If they were going to price this through the roof, it wouldn't be the centerpiece of 2 E3 conferences in a row.

Worth it for the crowd reaction alone.

I'd love to see Spencer come out on stage at the beginning and dropping a $499 bomb. Entire conference would be soured.

I'd also love to see the 2017 remake of E3 2013's "Xbox One $499" at the end of the conference, as if seeing the games at 4K will really justify the $100 difference to the Pro.

Ah mistakes, never learn from them.

I still believe it's $399 but if it is only $499 then what was the point of this?

Except that narrative wasn't driven by specific media people. That's fucked up part...

I'm sorry but either your friend made this up, misheard it or the employees were making stuff up. There is absolutely no way that random Gamestops have received detailed information about Scorpio at this time.

Yeah if Gamestop had marketing materials, it would be all over the internet by now.

Conversely sometimes employees at Gamestop make shit up so they could have just been talking BS in the back.

Pfft it'll be $399. Otherwise the thing only really appeals to the hardest of the hardcore fans of the Xbox ecosystem.

$499 puts Scorpio in this weird value proposition no man's land where you're better off saving $100+ and getting a Pro, or adding a little more to the pot and building a PC.

499$ given how low Xbox One sales have sinked and given how the PS4 Pro has performed at 399$ sounds too high if they want the Scorpio to revitalize hardware sales in the Xbox business (and also considering that the Pro won't stay at 399$ this fall).
If instead they want to sell it just as a premium device to get the money of the same dedicated fans who bought the Xbox One at 500$ at launch then it's a perfect price.
In any case even at 399$ Scorpio won't be a mainstream device and it won't have the impact of the launch of an actual next gen console with exclusive games. This is something that some fans are trying hard to ignore.

About Geoff I don't know about his sources but yeah there's the possibility that he's being used with a controlled leak to either prepare people to the 499$ price or on the contrary to make the eventual 399$ announcement seem better than it actually is.

I don't know anyone who could look at the way Microsoft has been pricing it's premium products and think that 499 would be unreasonable.

They're selling to enthusiasts because the mass market has already been gobbled up. And that's okay with them - they're never going to catch the runaway Sony train, but they can put out a really great system at a reasonable price (even at 499) and set themselves up for success in the future.

At 499$ this console is dead in the water if they don't show some compelling software to match it. Crackdown 3 and Sea of Thieves is not enough to carry a console that's 100$ more than the PS4 Pro.

Have Goeff ever done something like this before? I feel like he got to many friends in the industry to piss off by leaking stuff. This feel fishy.

That was the most predicable price.

Premium product with premium price.

I've been saying that since forever. Guess the responses I got.
People always believe "winning the race" is more important than a healthy business, which is not the case. This gen's race is over. Sell subscriptions, sell your most dedicated fan base pricier-than-usual stuff (first the Elite Controller, now Scorpio) and move on.

That's a fine price for a luxury version of the Xbox One. I mean I wasn't going to buy it regardless so maybe I'm missing something.

It's possible. I figured it wasn't worth posting on here before but I if Keighley's doing it I may as well throw it out there. E3, etc

This definitely feels like a PR move. A $400 price point is good, but it's even better if people thought it was going to be $500.

Or, maybe it is a lot more powerful than we thought.

Why are people suddenly expecting it to be $399? They've been saying since the reveal that it will be a premium product with a premium price point, which actually makes $499 a surprisingly low price to me. I won't be buying one since I'm pretty much stuck on PlayStation as my primary system whether I like it or not and I already own an XB1S, but I don't think $499 is that unreasonable.

That said, I really hope MS aren't banking on this to get them out of their current predicament...

I doubt that Microsoft leaked it to Geoff in order to undercut it at the conference. This would hurt his credibility, and they don't do stuff like that, they are professionals. I think it's more likely that they leaked it to soften the blow of such an announcement, if they leaked it at all.

Man this place proves time and time again their expectations of price and value are completely out of whack with the real world. Just like that PS+ hypothetical thread and Switch reveal.

If that holds true, then it's the number I expected at the high end. I guess there's probably some kind of bling/added value feature besides the specs for the price.

I expect a $499 price tag but if they include a Elite which is likely that's a $150 controller which puts the console price itself way down.

It isn't a midgen refresh? Or if it is, every new MS console will be a midgen refresh. The jump to Scorpio 2 won't be bigger than the jump from XB1 to Scorpio.

How many times must MS reiterate this for people to understand?

Not often I disagree with my panda brethren, but you're wrong. The hardware that comes after Scorpio will have a decent GPU performance increase and a *massive* CPU increase, simply dictated by the possibilities given AMD's APU progress.

Because when you get someone who is known to do lots of E3 coverage like Geoff give him a number you know will disappoint many people, it creates a lift in the hype when its announced at a cheaper price. Its an age old marketing tactic. Being in his position and leaking shit that could cause issues between himself and MS is a beyond stupid idea.
