Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

If it is $399, than what he has been doing for the past few hours isn't journalism.

Sure it is. Journalism isn't about getting it right every single time. It's about reporting information to the general public that comes from credible sources.

Now, we don't know whether the statement is true or not as factors could still at this moment influence the outcome, but one thing's for sure.

We will find out soon enough.

They rehearsed the price at $499, hoping that the price would leak. Then, at the conferenace, they announce the price at $399 to everyone's surprise! *speculation*
Exactly. They're not going to be openly rehearsing it with the real price, surely.
Also, if Geoff was there why would he drop himself in it and leak the price? Makes no sense.

Can we get Geoff under oath that Scorpio will be $499?

Oh man, you are KILLING me on set.

He can't "confirm" it. He's not a Microsoft employee. Thus, it is rumor.

you don't call something a rumor when you're the one who reported it

it would be like finding out the price and then saying to a friend "hey, did you hear the rumor about it being $499?". like, is it a rumor, or are you telling me this is true?

prob just phrasing it that way to hype the show, but it's pretty weird to report something confidently and then immediately refer to it as a rumor

Yeah the fact that no one else has corroborated it basically kills the idea of a fake rehearsal price. Is this what the Acceptance stage looks like?
My head is saying $499 but my heart is still saying $399. Ah well, we'll find out soon enough!

Is it a surprise when the vast majority of people observing this are expecting precisely that? The "surprise" would be Geoff ruining his credibility for attention on Twitter.

For the people complaining about $499...

If $100 makes that much of a difference you probably shouldn't be buying the system in the first place.

MS is not stupid, they know that the Xbox one S will outsell the Scorpio in the first and second year because the XOne S is significantly cheaper ($200 right now) and it appeals to the bigger gaming market (causals).

The Scorpio is aimed at hardcore gamers right now and MS knows that crowd will not hesitant buying one if it has the right feature, even at $500.

People don't realize that the Xbox one failed at $500 at launch because they marketed the system poorly plus it was a weaker system compared to the PS4 which was also cheaper, that is not the case this time around.

There is absolutely no need to have the actual price when doing the rehearsal, especially if they want it to be a surprise.

I'm not much of a conspiracist but I thought about this too. The leak potential should be obvious to anyone. Naming a false price in order to being able to still do the full practise sessions doesn't seem so far-fetched but I wouldn't hold my breath. Saying the real price does seem a bit bizarre though all things considered.

Yep. Agreed. Just waiting to see all the people excitedly proclaiming all the crowd that needs to be eaten, when in reality they're just going to be hyping and screaming about it exactly as someone from marketing planned all along.

If it does end up being $499, my question is why the hell Microsoft is rehearsing with the actual price or any price at all. Seems like something you would intentionally leave out until it's showtime.

- $499 rehersed to throw people off just for them to surprise with cheaper price. MS comes out a winner.

- $499 turns out to be actial price. MS gets the price out early to get the negative shock reduced a bit.

- price is actually planned higher than that and Geoff is trying to sway thier announcement :p

This.

THIS IS ALL MISDIRECTION.

When Microsoft announce $399, they want us to be shocked. Most of us will be "okay". They have always been building up towards the general populace to expect a $499 tag and want the mic drop moment with $399. At this point, it feels tiring.

I can't tell if some of you are being serious or not at this point.

I really hope this is all a swerve by Microsoft to cause drama before the event. I really want them to succeed and at $499 this console is gonna be DOA. At $399 they can shake up the world.

I don't think any reasonable company would do that though.

They've already gotten a lot of (negative) coverage on this rumored price, turning off potential consumers over a fake price (some of whom might tune out of even watching the conference because of it) and creating lingering confusion, for what? An applause moment at a conference?

The "it's a deliberate misdirect" take isn't believable.

From a marketing standpoint any little pop you get from a "lol we trolled the hardcores" moment by announcing 399 after leaking 499 would be FAR outweighed by confusion you would subsequently create about the real price amongst the non-hardcore.

the launch price of the ps4 and the current price of the ps4 pro are $400 for a reason, its because that is the ceiling of what people are willing to pay. I cant believe microsoft fell into the same trap twice, once at launch and again with scorpio.
the lead sku for the 360 at launch was $400 too I swear its the magic number.

We don't know the circumstances in which they rehearsed or how Geoff got the info.

It makes little sense to rehearse with fake material. You are going to make special slides and such with different prices?

Still don't believe it. I can't believe any company would be dumb enough to do this after the PS3 debacle.

When adjusted for inflation the PS3's $499 price in Nov of 2006 comes to $606.75 today. I mean, minimum wage here in Illinois was $6.50 in 06' (it's $10 now!), hardly a comparable situation.

I Don't get why so many feel cheated by a $499 price tag, this is what i been feeling it would drop at, lowest $449 and that was with fingers crossed. Phil Spencer been saying for Months it will be an elite console with a premium price tag. He even called the Scorpio the Rolls Royce of the Xbox family, and also stated the price wouldn't fit everyone's budget. So not sure why everyone is so surprised?!

I'm sure the people impressed with the specs will have no problem paying this.

It's the people who wanted this to be the resurgence of Xbox to combat Sony that are disappointed.
