Nintendo Direct announced for Sept 14, 2017 (midnight CEST)

I'm excited, but at the same time I'm not expecting anything specific. So at worst, I'll be slightly underwhelmed. I think the Direct will at least be decent, though.

Yeah that's my thinking too, we'll get another great Mario trailer and the rest of the 2017 lineup will get time in the spotlight with release dates and we may see a several surprise reveals, from first or third party. If it's the bare minimum that could be expected out of a 45 minute Direct at this moment? I see no reason to be anything more than underwhelmed.

I'd like to see Retro's game as soon as possible but in the grand scheme of things what's the rush? They'll announce it when it's good and ready so whatever really.

For me, it was just less interesting than the original. I liked the idea of a mansion where all of these humans lived and interacted with each other before they became ghosts. Neville and his family lived in the west wing. There was a creepy butler who loved a girl named Melody. A fortune teller who now wants to atone for her sins in life took up residence in that house. And you can go into the Gameboy Horror and read bios on all these people. Much more appealing to me than missions, generic looking ghosts, and spiders and stairs as bosses.

Also you could probe every freaking corner for tons of secret money. That was half the fun.

I mean Mario, Pokemon (doubt it will show up tho), FE:W, and XB2 are all pretty big games that could take up 45 minutes together. Add in some low key type announcements and I think that's about it. Of course most Direct do announce or show new shit so expect maybe one but that's all I expect.

real talk tho Mario is all I need right now

Just remember this isn't E3. Super Smash Bros for instance is unlikely.
I would be more inclined to agree if it were to be a totally new Smash, but a port is of less pedigree.

Not saying I necessarily expect Smash tomorrow, but before next E3? Sure, assuming the port is real.

Can we get a "You can download this software right after this direct" moment pls. Those help me cope with the after-direct hype/frustration by keeping my mind busy. :p

Hoping for a Mario Odyssey curveball tomorrow since apparently there's an embargo. Could you imagine if the map we saw so far was still somehow just one hemisphere of the planet? <3

Cooking Mama Redux: Mama's F*cking Pissed
Platinum x Taito x Retro: Cooking WOAH Mama

It'll be Xenoblade 2 and people will still doubt that it makes 2017

Kinda agree, but mostly because imo they need a "new" multiplayer game to release close to the moment when you'll have to start paying for online. Smash is a nice candidate.

Unless they just don't bother and assume people will just pay kindly once they take away their ability to enjoy splatoon and mario kart

I fully agree. Luigi's Mansion 2 was one of my biggest disappointment of the recent years, but I put the blame on the 3DS. I hope if they do a Switch game it will be more akin to the first one.

I'd reeeeeeeeally like to see DQ Heroes I and II hit for the holiday but not sure if they would with Fire Emblem Warriors coming too.

One that I thought was hilarious was the pokemon direct back in June. It wasn't bad but made people were unhappy.
If the eurogamer Stars rumor didn't exist I feel like people would've been more ok with it but there was just a massive expectation that Stars was happening

Oh yeah! People had their hopes reaaally high for that one. I don't blame them but it was pretty wild seeing the backlash happen live. I don't think anyone anticipated people would be so ready to move on from the 3DS as much as they were. The Pokemon "direct" that was just a 2-minute Sun and Moon teaser with only a couple seconds of footage was pretty weird too.

Nintendo's general Directs though, those have a pretty good track record.

P much.

What was Bill's big troll for E3? I don't remember...

He tweeted shortly before how it will be only about Holiday 2017 titles.

Hype reached subzero levels.

After the show he followed up with a "Only? I meant mostly. I hate it when I mix up words" or something along those lines.

Beating a dead horse for a millionth of time, but it wasn't just Eurogamer.

I'm cool with US/UM in theory but I feel like we still barely know much about it. It's an alternate storyline yeah, but what's that mean? Same characters? Different events? How different? Some kind of funky spin? I hope we get more info.

Yeah, I can't believe they're this (relatively) close to release and we still don't know what the heck they are. I would love for it to be a sequel like B2W2 were. If they're not and are just a third version*, though, I don't see a reason to buy on launch.

*a third version sans Battle Frontier, I would legitimately buy a new Pokemon just for a Battle Frontier

From what I've seen, DirectGAF either gets their hopes up too high or (on occasion) sets their expectations to a minimum. It's looking like we're flying towards the sun & opting for the former.
Primarily they are every 3 months about releases for the next 3 months. Usually I just expect that stuff to be covered but it's always nice when they throw in a surprise or two that's not their January direct or E3. Those two usually tend to have the bigger announcements.

My predictions:

**10-15 minutes on Super Mario Odyssey
**Dragon Quest Builders 2
**Xenoblade Chronicles 2
**Yokai Watch 2: Psychic Specters
**Lola Pop for ARMS
**Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC
**Skyrim
**Fire Emblem Warriors
**Bayonetta 1/2
**Wonderful 101 remaster
**Resident Evil Revelations Collection

I agree and concur on Luigi's Mansion 2 disappointment, and even write something about it on a official survey.
Plus the first game's music was better, too.

Have we ever figured out what games Tantalus are working on? MPT HD might be a reasonable title to fill that role.

That's a hell of a long time on one game, even if it's their main game. I'd expect more like 6-7 minutes max.

Probably not going to happen, but I want GBA VC to come to 3DS, though they might be completely finished with 3DS VC after G/S comes out.

I'm so happy that post direct threads from now on should finally end the "where is metroid?! it's dead! *insert game* took its place!" in favour of "where's our Prime 4 footage?!"

I love Metroid but man that recurring trend got old like three years ago.

Have we been talking about this in here? because I was just the other day thinking about how Luigi's Mansion 2 took the concept my younger self had hoped for a sequel (multiple locations escalating in size) but ultimately kneecapped itself in various ways.

I can't believe the negativity toward Luigi's Mansion 2 on GAF. That game was sublime.

It's alright, but it has nowhere near the vibes Luigi's Mansion 1 had, and the vibes were basically the only thing Luigi's Mansion had going for it. It's a pretty solid low-B tier 3DS game like Hey! Pikmin or Mario Golf.

I didn't like the mission based structure of the game. I'd rather it was a connected village with five mansions that needed explored. It feels less like an adventure when broken into levels.

Yeah, it was awesome and the pacing was great for a handheld game. The online Scarescraper mode was an amazing addition as well. Whatever the next iteration is like, I hope they keep that mode.

Mario Golf or Luigi's Mansion are hardly B-tier.

It just doesn't follow the format set by the original game. That doesn't mean it's not good, but a lot of fans of the original wanted something different.

Imagine Resident Evil comes out for the first time. People love it for its characters and the big explorable campus of the Spencer Mansion.

Now imagine Resident Evil 2 has five mansions and its mission based and there are no characters. It can still be a great game, with every other element of its predessecor, but those two things people most are still missing.

(Obviously this is a fictional version of RE1 and 2 - I'm just trying to stretch a comparison.)

My favorite part of Luigi's Mansion was the portrait ghosts - the bosses. The game was structured around finding and solving the riddles of these bosses, not unlike Shadow of the Colossus. And as you progressed, you uncovered more secrets of mansion and overcame a previously hostile environment, like Metroid.

Dark Moon just doesn't do that the same way. It lacks... intimacy. Which is okay! It's just a big departure from the original adventure.

I don't think anyone anticipated people would be so ready to move on from the 3DS as much as they were.

Im not sure why though. The switch is basically 2 generations ahead of the 3DS. Not only that but it's a fantastic piece of HW which the 3DS never was. That plus you get to play your games on your TV or on the go. The switch is just such a monumental leap over the 3DS. I don't think it's surprising at all that people were ready to move on immediately.

It's mostly because of the design philosophy of Nintendo at the time, where handheld games called for quicker experiences, turning Luigi's Mansion into a more arcade-like experience. Which I personally loved, but can understand why some fans wouldn't mesh with it.

That said I can't say the Resident Evil 2 hypothetical exactly matches this.

I admit it was a forced comparison. I'm not comparing it to the ACTUAL Resident Evil 1 + 2. I'm creating a fictional hypothetical. I was just going for another frame of reference about a mansion with memorable characters.

The mansion from...Luigi's Mansion is one of Nintendo's most underrated game worlds, between the portrait ghosts, the secrets, the art style, the room variety and such it really gives off character.

It's not quite Spencer Mansion level of eerie exploration thrills but it's not nearly mentioned enough. (despite turning up in smash and multiple mario kart titles in a kinda generic way)
Also the way the music meshed with the light/dark and Luigi's remaining health, sublime!

Going back to 2, even with the mission structure presented as a handheld boon, it never quite nailed that approach to me, some missions still felt like they went on a bit (were there mid mission saves?) and the lack of flow between things (being forcibly booted out after reaching a new area, collectables being kinda inconsistent thus, never really getting an open exploration of the locales.
It's a game I appreciate but not one I've ever gone back to.

funny someone should mention its arcade stylings though, because those assets made for a surprisingly competent arcade light gun esque version of the game, those 3DS visuals held up when being puffed up.

I'm going to keep my expectations low

Final Fantasy VI Remake
Chrono Trigger 2
Breath of Wild 7
Grand Theft Auto: Mushroom Kingdom
Portal 3
Left for Dead 3
Agent
Scalebound
Super Mario RPG 2
Resident Evil 8
Warcraft 4
Half Life 2 Episode 3
Mother 4
F-Zero NX
Star Wars 1313

I think that these are all reasonable.

Half Life 2 episode 3 is dead, let it go. It will be HL3

I actually agree, I just don't think Nintendo, Game Freak, Tpci etc. were prepared for just how instantaneous the transition would be. They underestimated how thirsty people were for new hardware. It's a lot like how the PS4/Xbox One transition caught a lot of companies off guard. So many crossgen games that dried up after barely a year.

Yeah, I figured it'd be the other way around. As much personality as the first one had, having to slowly go through the mansion from one end to the other and catching all of those Boos was one of the most painful things I've ever had to do in any game. Much preferred the more arcade like nature, better pacing, and varied locations of the second one

But Imagine if 3 is exactly like that. Oh my god. I want it now.

For 3 they should just do some fast travelling through spooky mirrors or something. Because the atmosphere suffered from the arcade style level select. What was worse was the enemy design though. The bosses in 1 were so much better and less generic.
