iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

6S still getting warm as hell 3 days later with normal use. Wasn’t acting like that on iOS 10. Battery still shittier too, but I’m being patient.

Performance on my 6S Plus is dire. Going to try an iTunes back up and then restore it to see if it helps.

Apple's battery stats are terrible.
  1. Those times at the bottom are since "last full charge" - so if you pulled the cable at 99% then they could be continuing from a previous day, which would explain the 7 hours usage and 7 hours standby.

  1. You may be right. Pulled the plug at 96% yesterday. However, the day before it was charged fully overnight and it gave me the same issue. Could Hey Siri affect it? Thinking of a process that could run continuously even when on sleep.

Charged it again overnight, see how it goes. iOS 10 and even the betas prior to the GM always gave me somewhat accurate battery usage.

Is the backup a necessity? if you were using iCloud features you could just restore the phone and still have your photos, contacts, etc.
And you could install the apps you actually needed on a per-app basis. restore your phone's former state from the bottom up, so to speak.

the phone getting WARM means it's actively doing something. What do battery usage stats say?

  2. The displayed stats are a percentage of usage, not the percentage of battery drain. So in the last 24 hours Safari was 19% of the apps you used, it did not drain 19% of your battery in 14 minutes even though that's what it appears to show.
The stats for “Time since last full recharge” typically resets around 90% unless Apple has changed that.

It’s measurement is very unreliable unless you charge to 100% and leave it in the charger for another 10-15mins or so. Before iOS 10 you could use the Coconut battery app to see that when you reached 100%, the charge was actually only around 95-96%.

Can someone please explain to me why handoff doesn’t work for my mom with her 2017 Ipad 9’7" and IPhone 6S plus while it works for me with my old iPad Pro and iPhone 7 Plus?

6S Plus with around 4 hours of internet browsing and twitter, only 25% battery left.

How do you reconcile this with the claimed wifi browsing time benchmarks published upon release of every variant? That's 5 hours, and you are done.

Are there two kinds of people, those who browse like a benchmark, and those that have OCD and never stop scrolling and clicking and chew up power at twice the rate?

I apologize if this has already been asked - I haven’t read the entire thread. But is Apple Maps the only GPS app that works cohesively with Do Not Disturb While Driving? To my knowledge, it’s the only GPS that will still show from the lock screen. I tried using it yesterday, and it completely missed three traffic circles and thought I was off-road. It’ll be unfortunate if I can only use Apple Maps with it, because then I’d just be inclined to not use it.

Whoa what the hell, just noticed some weird activity with the brightness changing on its own. I saw a few times now the screen on my ipad has dimmed or gotten brighter on its own, seemingly randomly. Welll, I caught it doing this again just now and pulled up my control center and I actually was able to watch it as the brightness bar raised and lowered on its own. I wasn’t touching the screen at all either. Is this a new setting or something or a bug?

IOS11 enables auto brightness. I had to look up a guide online to disable it because it’s hidden in some accessibility menu. Good luck, may the force be with you.

Apple enables auto brightness as default in iOS11 (upgrade old phone or get new phone)

Ask Siri to turn off auto brightness
Lol Siri says it can't change auto brightness and then it opens up the wrong Settings page. Using search in Settings app doesn't open up the exact page either. Apple is really trying hard to bury this setting. I wonder why?

So what seems to be the general consensus on iOS 11? I have a 2017 iPad 9.7 and am wondering if it's safe for me to upgrade. I really want to try out the dock and the new slide over features, but it sounds like some people are having issues.

Probably to combat iPhone X OLED burn-in? Considering all future iPhones are probably going to use the screen tech, I guess it makes sense to just flip it on by default heh

After that YouTube incident my battery life is back to normal. That was very weird, never had an app gobble up battery life in the background like that since I started using iPhones.

And my iPad just locked me out for 15 minutes. I was trying to register my left thumbprint, but it wasn't working properly. So I rebooted, and was locked out after I powered it back on. Is that by design?

I’ve an issue with the Apple TV 4, if you turn reduce motion on in accessibility settings, the multi-tasking window icons don’t fade away.

Hey guys, I have a possibly silly question.

So I was on iOS 11 beta basically all throughout the beta period. I updated my phone to the GM release. So let's say I backed it up and everything went fine, and I wanna upgrade to the 8 or X. Will I be able to use that backup? I ask because in the past I couldn't use a backup on my new phone because I was using beta software on the old one and on the backup. But, now that I'm on GM release, I should be fine right?

Basically: I was in iOS 11 beta. Updated to GM release when it was available. Did a backup. If I get a new phone, will it be able to use that backup on the new phone?

Thanks!

GM is the same build as the public release version. Your new iPhone should restore from that backup fine.

I quite like the new iOS on Ipad (Air 2). The dock is pretty useful and as someone who uses his ipad to work when on a train or something, the documents feature comes in handy.

Two things I don't like:

the new full screen video player has the timeline on the bottom now, which sometimes pops up the dock when I want to scroll trough the video.

The other thing is the multitask-screens. I love this feature, but when I want to close one of the two screens, I struggle with the touch and swipe-away. I usually have to resort to pressing the homebutton and relaunching apps.

Ok cool. I figured that was the case but I've had weird issues restoring from backups in the past when running beta and getting a new phone. Since this was the GM release I figured it would be just the same.

Thanks!

I'm having a super weird issue with siri on my iPhone 8. She can't understand me at all when I'm talking to her "on the phone" but when I'm using a headset it works fine. I tested calling a friend and he said the microphone worked fine. Super weird. Yes, I tried rebooting the phone.

I've only had this once on my Apple Watch and turns out there was some water stuck in one of the holes afte cleaning it (presumably the mic). Perhaps not the problem when your friend said you sound fine (maybe take a voice memo and play it back to check for yourself?) but thought I'd put it out there.

Tried checking in Voice Memo and mic sounds fine there too...

In the files app, how do I undownload a file? If I tap a Dropbox photo it downloads it but I see no way of deleting the local copy.

Getting pretty atrocious battery life on my 6s for sure. Only been using it an hour and 6 minutes with standby for 2 hours and down to 63%. Will be draining to zero for a few times. Really like the quickness of this update though. Everything seems snappier. Even battery drain lol.

Not sure if this is an iOS 11-specific bug, but I'm not able to add any of my songs I've purchased through iTunes to my iPhone. Every time I drag-and-drop them onto my iPhone, they are just greyed out with the dashed circle.

Not sure about what is the issue. >_>

Can't understand meaning she hears you but can't work out what you say? Or she doesn't hear anything?

There are a few mics on the phone. My main phonecall mic is broken, but if I switch to speakerphone I can talk to people. Siri works for me, Voice Memos doesn't.

(Not an iOS issue for me: the mic is broken and has been for months.)

She hears something but it's absolutely not what I'm saying. The bar thing seems to respond to my voice but the interpreter works for maybe the first word or two then breaks down. I can barely explain it because its so weird.

EDIT: found the error, I haven't got a real screen protector yet so I left the front part of the plastic on. Siri uses the microphone that's on top of the screen in the slit which was covered by the plastic. Mystery solved.

Folks, I don’t know if it’s a placebo thing, but I feel like iOS11 is draining my battery faster on my 7+. Also some of the animations are framier than I’d like.

OK I've given new Siri a long trial and I hate her voice. It's shrill, annoying, high pitched and cromulent. I'm going to switch British or Aussie for keeps.

I've a lot of apps we use at work that doesn't have data backed up to icloud. And I cba going back through all the mobile iron enrolment and installing of certificates. I thought a clean wipe and then iTunes restore would help alleviate my performance issues. iCloud also doesn't have enough room to backup this phone with the photos without paying either.

Apparently Touch ID isn’t working when my iPad Air 2 is plugged in to the charger.

British Siri is the best, that is until apple adds southern Siri to the mix.

I’ve found sometimes you need to refresh logins and authentication with handoff and continuity for them to work properly.

Is it not possible to pop out a video from the YouTube app or website, so the video is floating above everything else?
Only through third-party apps.

What I meant is that it’s been getting warm even if I’m only doing normal browsing on Safari, which wasn’t happening before. I’m still hopeful that the phone is still working out kinks under the hood and that it will stabilize though. It isn’t getting warm by itself when I leave it aside, thankfully.

I'm getting my 8+ on monday, upgrading from my 7. What's the best way to do this transfer? I kind of want to update my 8+ to 11 before putting my stuff on it.

Is it better to just start fresh? Or does restoring from an iCloud backup work really well? I just don't want to carry over any potential issues from my 7.

Restoring from iCloud is near-perfect. It restores all your settings like permissions, wallpaper, app placement, etc, and it starts downloading all the apps you have. The redownloaded apps will retain their data.

To be safe, you might want upload any game saves you have to iCloud if they support it.

Sometimes 2-factor authentication apps aren't happy after a restore, so if you use any, be sure you have their recovery keys handy. Also, it's rare, but if any apps you own aren't on the store anymore, they won't be restored.

If your phone does start getting funky for whatever reason, Reset All Settings (not Erase) is usually a good way to get it fresh without losing data.

Not sure I follow, you mean bookmarking each Youtube video then doing what? I usually use Youplayer when I want to watch Youtube on PiP.

Nah, something like this. Which seems to work pretty well. I havent used it too much though since I'll prob stick with Protube until its completely broken.

Ohh, that’s pretty awesome. I knew it was theoretically possible since you can do PiP normally on macOS, but yeah, I wasn’t aware of that solution on iOS.

Had enough of the Podcast app since the update, switched over to Overcast and love it so far. For those that don't like the changes I highly recommend.

Just a heads up, but you can use this on the Mac and iOS, and it works for other videos that don’t natively support picture in picture.

With how all-encompassing the settings search is it’s kind of irrelevant where each setting is imo.
