EA shuts down Visceral, moves Star Wars game to EA Vancouver/others

I don't buy that. I don't think traditional SP game is too expensive. It's that Gaas just makes more money.

Yes, and thus games that make less money are less cost-effective for the company. In the end these companies are publicly traded and even a profitable game that simply doesn't return enough profit can be an undesirable result for shareholders.

I'm good I left over 4 months ago. Thanks for the concern though!

I'm glad to hear you're alright. This is such a damn shame, though. I wish Visceral would've gotten the kind of latitude on an AAA licensed game that Rocksteady has, but I guess it's different since Rocksteady's outright owned by WB but Visceral isn't owned by Disney. Sigh.

Man what a bummer. Add another to EA's kill count.

Now I'm worried about Bioware, Respawn and Criterion. Although one could argue Criterion has been dead for a long time now.

Instead of killing Criterion they just turned it into a lifeless husk. Almost a fate worst than death in some ways; but at least it lets people keep a job.

The picture on the first few pages wasn't updated correctly. Here ya go :p

Online components =/= the game won't have a single-player mode.

Considering the wealth of games with large single-player modes that released this year, the need to panic, though typical of GAF, seems premature.

Single player games will still exist for sure. If they are open world, offer 50+ hours of content, and have MXT and loot Boxes in them.

Outside of 1st party and Indies what example is there in the market of AAA single player linear focused games succeeding? The only major 3rd part publisher still trying, Bethesda, has had 3 misses in a row all with good quality games.

The market does not any longer support linear story based games

Yeah. Look at Switch's lineup: Mario Kart, Arms, Splatoon. Nintendo is riding the GaaS train high, and will be even higher when they release Smash.

Sony is the only one left behind, and I'm afraid they are gonna pay for it.

I wouldn't say they're riding it more that they realize:
1. These games flourish through word of mouth, and for a new system that's crucial
2. I've said this before, but GaaS are the way multiplayer games should be. Nintendo's large multiplayer titles were already once a gen, so they were tailor made for this model

They aren't neglecting single player experiences. They did launch with a massive single player game (Zelda) and will be finishing off the year with more of the (DLC, Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2)

EA discussing Amy Hennig's "next move" very much sounds like that Star Wars game as it was is dead.
Mass market. Your average consumer is the reason why publisher are going with a GaaS model for theirl games.
Truth. My Brother primarily played Single Player games but got hooked on Destiny and barely played anything else. Games as a Service is the present and future.

Yup, I agree with most others in thinking that EA's press release is just corporate speak for, "We realized that we can't consistently monetize a true single-player experience, so we decided to redo the game, so Loot Boxes would make sense."

It looks like Sony will be the only one making AAA single player driven games right now. Unless that's going to change as well...

What a fucking bummer. Dead Space 1 and 2 were so good and then EA basically killed them with Dead Space 3 (a game that reeked of publisher influence) and the trash games they worked on afterwards (Battlefield Hardline, Army of Two).

gaas it up guys, we need more gaas

I wonder what happens when every single major game's gonna be a platform on its own... won't it hamper industry if people will latch on to 1 or 2 games max and stay with them omitting others?

Possibly. Only time will tell.

Fuck. Wasn't looking forward to this and wished it wouldn't happen. I really hoped they were going to use Visceral to make a dead space 4, But nope. Honestly killing everything they're involved with. Mass effect is on life support, BF2 may well be known as being p2w.

Honestly feel sorry for everyone at visceral and wish them the best of luck.
Poor Henning too, Moved over for star wars and this happens. Knowing EA though we should known this was always a risk.

And the statement worries me about the future of the game too. "Revamp" And they want to make it playable for a long time... Which definitely suggests it's moving away from an SP game into...something with a ton of updates and an economy around it probably.

Sad day. If visceral remnants want to go for something like a dead space spiritual successor, fully behind them.

That's pretty sad as I really liked their Dead Space IP and was really anticipating their take on Uncharted: Star Wars.

Oh well...in a couple years we will yearn the days with these high class SP-High-Budget games.

But hey, some will be probably left which we can buy in a sale so we can afterwards criticise the lack of said games.

Look at the thread titles:

Bethesda and 3 and a half under-performing games in a row
Gran Turismo Sport is extremely limited in offline mode (no saves, unlocks, etc..)
EA shuts down Visceral, moves Star Wars game to EA Vancouver/others
Resident Evil 7 Ships 4 Million Copies Worldwide (At 500K/2M FY goal by March 2018)

I think God is trying to tell us something today.

It sounds like its gone from being a linear experience like Uncharted and more towards an open world like Assassins Creed. Maybe they just didn't have a way to shoe horn loot boxes in so they had to start from scratch?

...and consumers are at least as much to blame for the impending death of single-player games as publishers are, thanks to their acceptance and normalization of GaaS.

Had they rejected it, as they did online passes, maybe things would be different. Unfortunately, they are far too willing to throw their money at publishers by the truckload for microtransactions, season passes, and DLC.

This is the industry that gaming consumers deserve.

But you're acting like consumers are upset with the current landscape. Many of them aren't. Like at all. And you see this with how much money is being spent.

My cousin who really doesn't have the income to spend on lots of games, has a family etc. He told me he needs the games he does buy to last a long time.

It's why he plays games like Destiny and Overwatch and various fighters.

But yea your average consumer is ok with it. They are the ones spending money and happily so. And it may not seem like it. But a lot of people on this very forum are indifferent to it as well.

I don't like a lot of EA games, but when I do (or more like did), it's from studios get that get shut down. Really fearing what the future EA is aiming for.

Am cry real bad. Dead Space 2 is like one of the best games I've ever experienced. I'll never forget Visceral for that amazing experience. The Whole Amy's Star Wars thing bums me out as well. Holy shit fuck EA like really. Fuck 'em.

I have no trust in EA doing the right thing here. Amy was pushed before. Perhaps she is being pushed again. That pure speculation, but you have to consider the past.

Perhaps EA said: “Amy, destiny makes bank, we need your creative direction to make bank like destiny”. And Amy said “go eat shit, you can’t make the kind of stories I tell in thst sort of game”. They are clearly trying to spin the closure of a studio into something that sound like a positive. But you can see that they are basically saying ‘we wanted to bend the initial idea and the current studio wasn’t playing ball’. And we know Amy won’t move when pushed like this...

Visceral is a strong studio and I’m sure it became even stronger with Amy. Don’t be surprised if we see a respawn style situation (without EA ovi).

The average consumer doesn't care about the sanctity of the gaming hobby or whatever. They view games as entertainment and the type of entertainment they enjoy is usually multiplayer-based with long lasting support from MTs. You might as well be bashing your head against the wall about this.
