The Spoony Experiment

Yeah, it really is. His videos stood out among a sea of AVGN ripoffs that were around at the time.

Probably wouldn't have achieved anything, but I half wonder if he would have been better off had he never started posting on Twitter. I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that social media is decidedly bad for some people's mental health.

It can be, I'm much happier not going on Facebook

And here I was getting excited about the possibility of a return... It is a shame that is has now come down to this for the guy...

Y'know... Spoony once said in a con at TooManyGames 2014 that the reason he hadn't done the Sephiroth storyline yet was because it could've been the finale to the whole show.

I guess he might as well have just done it.

Saw the bump, saw his tweet, checked out his twitter account and he's back to posting about wrestling for hours. His girlfriend needs to delete the app and break his phone.

Side note, I saw his Tekken video a while back and noticed he'd call himself the Lord of Tekken, why is this? Not once I don't think he's ever:

Uploaded a video of him talking about Tekken or playing Tekken at a competent level
Given an impression he's aware of the lore and/or fighting game mechanics
Attend a tournament
Involved in the Tekken FGC in anyway
etc.

Always found that weird, it doesn't sound like he's saying it as a joke that's going right over my head...
There was an older review where he featured a commenter posting under the name Lord of Tekken talking shit at him and got a joke out of the thing.

This is why you don't opt for a day to day salary, only, at a creative level, without significant gains to future proof yourself. Creative juices can run out, or the market can shift, supplement your income with secondary scources.

What has always stunned me was for awhile Spoony at least had the decency to make vlog reviews of wrestling and movies and even that stopped. It's clear based upon his twitter he still watches every major ppv and sees a lot of the big films every year, how hard is it just to rant at the camera? Yeah it was lazy but it was still content that a good chunk of his fan base enjoyed.

And he still did the livewire stuff where he streams games but never comments over them and he does he's annoyed and threatening someone in chat like every other day.

Jesus, just saw the tweet posted here. He wasted his potential. Dude had supporters who believed in him for so long and he pissed it all away. Wish he got some help. Also, quit watching wrestling and get a full-time job.

I think he still has that potential. If he can put out consistent content, I think he'll be fine. But yeah, he hasn't done that for a long time now. However, I still think his talent is there.

I don't see him as a self employed creator. He could ask Angry Joe for a job.

Joe has enough people helping him out now that I doubt he would hire Spoony unless he's local. Maybe Spoony could move to where Doug lives and do some NC videos with him.

I really doubt that Channel Awesome wants his business, mainly from a what-went-on-in-the-past standpoint. I'm sure Doug is fine with Spoony, but you know...

I remember the look on AJ's face when Spoony pulled the "BETRAYALLLLL! BETRAYALLLLL!" stuff while he was with him. Dunno if they still talk?

It's the Star Trek Klingon: The game, which I think included that classic Klingon language learning program from which he made a video waaay long ago. This is the actual game part. I'm watching too, it's nice to see him active again.

donations were pretty consistent during his latest streams on youtube...most streamers and content creators would kill someone to have the kind of support that spoony gets

He's done a bunch of Steam games over the past 24 hours under a banner called Wheel of Steam. The most recent one looks to be the final one for now. I'm guessing he did this recent streak of streams to get a quick influx of cash, probably to pay his bills. Now I'm wondering, was this an act of desperation? Did he do this in order to get time to plan ahead? Will he do this every time he needs cash?

Hopefully he sets up a schedule. He should be like ENB. That guy is currently doing 2-4 hour streams everyday and he gets plenty of donations each time he does it.

I don't think he did a livestream simply to cash in. Who knows if people will even donate and how much? I think he and the viewers were simply happy to see him active again.

Maybe if he simply does 1-2 hours a day and plays what he enjoys, he can make money and also enjoy some games with viewers. Win-win.

if i understood correctly (since i entered the stream late), it's the user themselves that told spoony that there was a way to get donations through youtube (the so called superchat) and to activate it.

Does he use Twitch? I remember he streamed in Twitch or some other service years ago. I watched his X-COM one. He should consider Twitch for the whole subbing and donation aspects of it.

I feel like at this point he might as well port all of the content from his site onto YouTube. Seems pointless keeping that site up and paying for hosting if he's never going to update it.

Glad to see he's a little bit more active again.

It's kinda weird that now that he's finally posting content, though not really what people want, his patreon is still going down. After all those years of people supporting him for nothing too, guess it really is too little too late.

Well, he just started it recently. It's possible some of those patrons donated to his stream.

Has it come to the point where all Spoony has to do is show his face on a stream and people will forgive/forget all his previous broken promises that he used for patreon donations?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Spoony's streams suck really bad? In that they mostly have long periods of silence that he doesn't bother editing out when they go to youtube?

To be fair it's really hard to "acknowledge the chat" when you have loads of viewers and messages rolling a mile a minute. When there's a lull in the action, you can check out the comments every now and then. He did thank the donators pretty well, easier to see those messages with the coloured textbox too.

I will agree that some of his Live wires have been pretty awkward due to him getting angry at the game and/or at the chat, especially if/when there's someone clearly trolling him. But a lot of times they've been really entertaining, he's just not a kind of streamer that will talk with the chat most of the time, due to aforementioned chat speed and the fact that he will mostly do live riffing on the game he's playing.

And yes they are getting uploaded to Youtube as-is, I don't personally mind, and it would probably be a lot more work to do a "highlight reel" type of video.

I watched his stream. He said, that having all the people watching and commenting the stream, actually made him feel a little better. He seriously needs to give him self such small achievements and either start a new life or make new, independent videos. Hopefully this is wake up call.

Nah, he needs to kill himself for the earth-shattering crime against humanity that he has committed.

Jesus, you people. Dislike him or whatever, but hell hath no fury like an internet commentator scorned. You sound like the whiniest people on earth.

Guy is trying to come back to a crowd that lost their collective minds towards him, can you blame him for not coming right out and addressing it? The internet is the toughest crowdi n the world and it's virtually impossible to please everyone. As for the many people watching his stream (and donating), those people want to see his personality - that's what they paid him for in the first place. Not everyone has a vindictive soul.

So quit being a sad little man stick in the mud and get over your entitled self. It's one man who plays video games on the internet. He's not robbing Goodwill donations. God damn, man.

Will miss you "The thread got bumped, did spoony just post a new video or is it someone complaining about spoony not posting videos and oh damn it was just the second one" GAF.

Best GAF

Bump, but I feel like this is an important thing. After goading people out of money and putting low effort streams and still getting around $500 on month on Patreon, he had pretty much showed us that he was not a very nice guy.

But now it's been 6 months, the longest time frame without any content, even 3 minute content of him drinking a soda (yes he did that before) and he's basically went even deeper on twitter, only really posting about Trump and Tucker Carlson.

People are still delusional and holding out hope, as he still has around $500 coming in a month on Patreon, despite him not doing what his Patreon said. in fact, some people are trying to get him kicked off the platform.

It's a shame but the old Spoony is gone and has spend years fooling people and taking their money through Patreon or through stream donations.

I'm sure soon we will have another "I can't afford my house" or similar excuses we've been fed for nearly 5 years now. For shame Spoony, for shame. At least Phelous and Nostalgia Critic (regardless of what you think of him) are still doing SOMETHING.

This guy is such a waste of talent. He is one of the wittiest and funniest gaming Youtube personalities, such a shame he evolved the way he did :/

Used to enjoy me some Spoony back in the day. It's a real shame he turned out to be a lazy douchebag that rides his illnesses like a get out of work free card.
