I never finished MGS4. Got to some bit where I was following some guy and just said "Naaah".

Might give it another go now.

Thanks. I played through in release order last time around but this time I really, finally want to make sense of the full story so fancy a chronological run through.
Yes I already know I'll fail and following the whole story is impossible, but I need to try damn it!

Haha ahh right, got ya! Good luck :p

The thing I love/hate about Metal Gear's storyline is that they always do something that sort of makes sense, and is a kinda cool way of tying stuff in the series together... but then they add an extra twist that sends it back into batshit. Off the top of my head (there's probably loads more):

- In MGS3, you have to rescue Sokolov, the designer of the Shagohod, an early prototype for what would become Metal Gear! ...Except the Shagohod doesn't actually have anything to do with Metal Gears, which are a whole seperate project, helmed by a different guy.

- The events of MGS2 are similar to MGS1 on purpose! The whole thing was a set-up to see if a soldier could be molded into a guy like Solid Snake! ...Except it wasn't, that's just what the Patriots wanted Solidus to think.

- After losing his arm in MGS1, Ocelot, son of spirit medium The Sorrow, slowly becomes consumed by the spirit of Liquid Snake! ...Except he wasn't really, he was faking it with nanomachines to trick everyone. Also he replaced Liquid's arm with a robot one, because why the hell not.

In my head, my own private canon is always the twist before the final, second twist. The series makes more sense that way.

I have to agree. But I think the reason Kojima does it is -
because he hates us. =p

That's one of my favorite arcs for some reason, I think it's because it really feels like he is a detective
plus the fact that you have young snake mask at that moment, such a tease

Why is this not on the PS Store as a digital download? Is there a reason after all these years? Has it ever been brought up in an interview?

I can't believe I just installed a FULL INSTALL for MGS4 in 2012. I never thought this day would be here. Can't start my replay right now, but I'm hype.

I think my favorite thing added to this game is the rolling sideways on the floor. It's very useful getting around quietly quickly and remaining low profile.

Yeah the movement and gameplay options in this are impressive and VERY underrated. I hope MGS5 expands it even more and gives us more time with the mechanics. More than any other in the series, I thought MGS4 was in desperate need of VR missions.

Ok this is one part that everyone seems to say it went like this but this is how I understood it: Ocelot indeed was posessed by Liquid in MGS2 by the hand and maybe because of The Sorrow stuff. At some point before MGS4 he cut off the hand and replaced it with a robotic arm so he wouldn't be posessed by Liquid anymore. Then he used whatever the fuck it was to make it seem like he still was Liquid to fool Patriots and Snake or something. Why else would he remove the hand.

I hope MGS5 makes the codec more like 2 and 3 and less like 4. I miss just listening to funny stories and characters just talking for hours it seems anytime you wanted. MGS4 did away with secret codec calls and all that.

That's one thing I'm actually really glad they took out. We already have been blessed with 20 minute cutscenes. I don't need 20 minute in depth secret Codec calls from Otacon just so he can talk to me about the type of toilet paper he uses to wipe his ass with.

This is correct. Part of it happens between games which confuses people a bit I think.

Hey guys, say I have 10 rations right, and I give all 10 to one dude and then die, reload the area and repeat. After 5 cycles, is that going to earn me the emblem for giving 50 rations to friendlies? Thanks

A lot of it was optional (especially in MGS3) so you wouldn't hear it unless you called various ppl of your own accord.

I hope he brings this aspect back as well.

All those tapes in Peace Walker were glorious.

I think you still get it as they try to provide you with all the options to take people down. It may not be given to you, but if not there is one you can pick up. I remember my harder runs and I still had the tranq option. I think there is a tranq sniper somewhere; I don't know how I would have beaten Wolf without it. I think the stun knife is a good option too.

Do weapons carry over to new game? I guess not. I have that stun knife, very cool. :p

Man, playing with the headset for the short codec calls is awesome! It feels like I am more in the game. I remember hearing that there were unique ones that only appeared if you were using a headset. Was that just BS or true?

I posted in the other thread by mistake, but was writing about how insane Konami is for not taking our money, MGS 4 is a DLC goldmine for single player.
New 5-6 hours campaign mission with either post-MGS 2 Snake or Raiden, new gameplay segments added to the main game, VR Missions. There's a bunch of possibilities.

If you haven't already done so I highly recommend downloading the podcasts for the ipod. Something to listen to while attempting the chicken emblem.

The patch came out four years after I played the game, how fitting.

Edit: Got my years mixed up, it's actually been three years. :x

Are trophy's that big of a deal?

Even after having my ps3 for a few years I still don't get this trophy hype.

Only note worthy thing I see here is being able to install your game, now you don't need to go the kitchen and make a dozen sandwiches after the end of each chapter.

Don't forget to download the 13 ingame podcasts, too!

They are basically the audio commentary to the game, during (a second) playthrough.
Here's a list that also has the recommended listening locations:
http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/IPod#Podcasts

btw, who here is truly hardcore and listens to the Codec messages via a headset? ;D

Yea I recommend those podcasts, it was worth it doing another playthrough to hear, lots of cool information. There are also videos on youtube with the podcasts running.

For me it's not the trophies that matter. I can now play the game without having the installs between arcs, which kinda bothered me tbh. Also, I have the Sony 7.1 headset and the dualshock 3 now, so it'll be nice listening to the amazing soundtrack and have rumble. Small and silly things, I know, but they make it so it isn't exactly the same experience as it was when I first played it in 2008.

Call Para Medic before and after you eat the glowing mushroom. The best.

My favourite was when you're wearing your Raiden disguise.

"You're starting to irritate me already."
"Really? I thought this look would make me more popular."
"I doubt it."

I really wished they would've added a series of VR missions along with this update. I think it would've been great to have a mode where you can cut loose with all your weapons, since the main game penalizes you for doing so.

Agreed. Mechanically, the game is awesome. So many different weapons, so many different ways to tackle situations, VR missions would have been amazing.

Hey, I loved doing that too! It was an awesome addition to the gameplay!

No fucking way... this was possible?

Yep. The game is so awesomely filled with little minute details that would otherwise be left unoticed.

like the CQC knee kick, which i only found out existed by visiting this thread.

BWAHAHAHA.. Goddam this is why i love kojima.

the lack of codec calls was one of my biggest complaints about the game.

This is exactly why I love the codec, years later and I'm still hearing new conversations even though I've beaten the game countless times since release.

Yeah same here, I literally discover something new every time I play the game, it's insane how much stuff they put in there!

<3 MGS.

I love how they pretty much call Snake a dumbass even though he can hear them.

The best is probably Sigint's convo where he recalls dreaming about killer shit. Or the naked camo. Or the cardboard box one.

Yeah, it's a lot more awesome than that lame sweep kick he normally does. Almost makes up for the loss of that awesome MGS2 roundhouse ;_;

I'm slightly annoyed. MGS4 is the only MGS I dont own a guide for.

Ebay has 2 guides listed for Aus, but theyre from UK, and its like $30 =\

Forgot to ask: is it good? is it worth owning?

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
But does it work? You could do that pre-patch as well, but you needed to wear the Corpse camo for AI soldiers to actually consider you dead. Without the Corpse camo they would check you and realize you are not actually dead.

I don't think it's changed but I haven't done it simply because I'm doing grinding for the emblems right now.

I started a new game and while I love this game I'm not sure if I have the heart to do it. Chicken emblem seems more frustrating and daunting the BBE. I've done BBE, it's simple because you KNOW if you're not getting it...

I wish you could track your stats in this game =/

Kinda lame trophies IMO, my brother got the highest rank (hardest difficulty, under 5 hours, zero alerts, zero kills, buncha other crap, needless to say its freaking hard) in the game before, and was looking forward to doing it again with a trophy to prove it.
But nope, you don't even get a trophy for playing it on the hardest difficulty.

You still need the BBE to get all the trophies...

Anyone who gets this Plat has proof that not only are they skilled gamers, they fucking love MGS4 and were willing to play it many, many times
