Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots 2.0 |OT| Kept you waiting, huh?

Fun to see the wellspring of MGS4 love in this thread. I remember checking GAF a few months after launch and being surprised at the outpouring of hate. Sure, the game's got problems, but I think it's a sum of its parts, and some of the parts are undeniably incredible.

Haha, yeah, lots of stories. One thing I recall was all the PS3 vs. 360 controversy at the time. (If you recall, it was much worse than it is now. I clearly remember having my family threatened by a fan when he became convinced that we were prepping a 360 version.) We had fun with it all though and put in a few easter eggs to stoke that fire, but I'm not sure anybody noticed...

As you all can see, Act III had the most problems. Credits goes to Shinta Nojiri for coming in at the very last minute and greatly improving it. He practically lived at the office for the final 60 days.

Overall, I remember being really worried about the game upon ship because of the cutscene-to-gameplay time ratio. I wanted the entire game to be like Act I & II, but I think the desire for a lot of special case fan-service stuff won out. I'm still really proud of the game and the controls, actually (they were drastically improved over what was originally intended to ship). Still don't have the urge to play it again though. Maybe on its 10 year anniversary?

The first two acts are so close to perfection. Some of the finest moments and enjoyable sections in gaming ever. And yeah, it's hard to go back to the older MGS games because of the vastly improved controls in MGS4. Still don't like the cover system though. :p

Anyway, I wasn't a member on here when MGS4 first released so I never got to express my appreciation for the work you put in; you and the team did a fine job sir. *Salute*

God damn it, it's like pouring salt in my wounds.

I was thinking about this and I think I prefer what we got.

Act 1 in particular was amazing, location and feel were so damn good. I would have loved to have more of it but not at the expense of what we did get.

If the rest the of the game was like the first two acts and then you told me later that what was actually planned, but didn't come to be, was a full on tailing mission and chase, a return to Shadow Moses, fight between Rex and Ray and a final showdown on a navy ship somewhere, I would definitely have been pretty disappointed.

In the end I'm really happy with the variety of gameplay we got to experience from chapter to chapter.

Can you confirm if Act 3 was initially planned to be a lot more complicated? All that cityspace just to follow a guy around seems a little strange.

That's some saddening stalker shit. It's exclusivity was certainly the most unusual thing about the project, at the time it was announced, PS3 had lots of third party exclusives, it's just that over time, while every one of them eventually went multiplatform, MGS4 didn't.

I remember the 'insert disc 2' thing leaked a few days before release, and everyone presumed it was a slight at the 360, in context it's not, but I can't think of any other potential easter eggs. Other than any 'proxy war' style subtext about console wars.

Act 3 really is pretty bad. It also feels like a huge waste of assets, there's that whole water way and stuff which 99% of people would never see. It almost feels like war should break out over night, and you'd get to see it all in the day, open war style.

It is more movie than game, but I think everyone expected that. In fact, there are areas that feel distinctly lacking in terms of video, things like the B&Bs backstories just being described by Drebin, it could have been great to see those stories played out visually in some way. Although I don't like it in the context of PO/PW, Ashley Wood style could have been great. A Tarantinoesque shift in presentation.

I think the fan service was important, every act parallels a Kojima game (or with the first act, a planned one we didn't get), it feels like an appropriate culmination to a series with the history it has, it's just a shame there's very little of the stealth action after the first boss, unless you're going for a no alerts run anyway. I think it controls great, the CQC is fumbling, but it was in 3 too. There's some animation priority that's a little extreme, but you can make it a lot snappier in the options.

I can't imagine how long you'd have to leave it to get any sort of fresh impression, but it is much nicer not to have to deal with the installs. When you do get around to it, it's better than it was when you shipped it.
Weird question, does anyone notice little squares on the screen during cutscenes? (not present for me during regular gameplay, and I tried two HDMI cables to be sure)

It looks like aritfacting (albeit they're larger than those though) that you would see during compressed cutscenes, but that's not something possible in this game, so i'm trying to figure out what it is.
It's some bizarre colour grading effect. The scene on the Volta with Ocelot's gun fingers, and the AI graveyard are the only prerendered cutscenes I believe.

Who directed the action for the Raiden cutscenes? This is more impressive than the stuff I see in movies. I had forgotten how much I loved them.

Ahh, ok. Thanks.

I was almost beginning to wonder if it's because I was playing on a 1080p TV or not lol

She would have died when Snake did the thing at the end anyway, she's an attention whore.

Watching the CQC videos reminded me of how deep the CQC system actually is. This is why I prefer it over other action games such as Uncharted, there are so many ways to take on enemies - I love it.

Favourite move has to be the ground choke. There's something immensely satisfying about sneaking up on someone from behind, taking them down and laying on their back, while they shake uncontrollably underneath me.

...What?

Currently timing my install, really missing the Snake screens though. No progress bar on the initial loading is a bit archaic.

I wish this game had more customization options. Ability to disable the threat ring, button-mapping, stuff like that.
Eh, I get the feeling that Raiden only leaves the cockpit to get his arms cut. I don't think I heard any explanation for it.

Edit, wait, how do I scream at Liquid?

Button mapping is strange, you have auto-aim on Square, a function I don't think anyone ever uses, but you have crouch/roll/prone all on Cross? Horrible decision.

I use it often. Makes life much easier for the chase scene and for holding people up.

How long does this thing take to load? After the patch you get the old 'Blah blah don't reset. Saves often etcetera etcetera Press X to Continue'. I started timing from there on my stopwatch and gave up after 25 mins. Just been and deleted all my previous old data just incase. Does the game really sit on the black screen with the little loading thing in the bottom corner during the install with no progression bar or am I having some troubles?

No, that shouldn't happen at all.

The full install is the normal Snake smoking install screen.

Auto-Aim shouldn't have been in the game. The only time it is remotely useful is during the bike chase, and that's only to see cool camera angles.

It was put in because Kojima thinks Japanese gamers suck with dual-analog controls, when in reality, it's probably just him. :p

Waste of a button.

Its so good playing a MGS again, going through for a no alert no kill run, having to sneak around scratches that stealth game itch that you rarely get these days really, the only ones in recent memory were Deus Ex: HR and the Co-Op part of Splinter Cell Conviction.

I hope we get a new MGS within the next few years, it would be great to play a whole new game with more modern refinements.

With how the controls changed, what could they have mapped to Square that isn't already handled by the other buttons?

That being said, I thought it was really smart that PW mapped rolling to R, as that helped out a ton in combat situations. A shame the console version put that back on X.

This could have been a great looking game, but they ruined it with those awful; shitty yellow, green and blue filters. This game needs an ENB mod asap!

Still a fun game, really enjoying it!

Oh my, yes. Couldn't agree more. There's something really refreshing and satisfying about trying to stay hidden especially during a time where every game is getting a bit shooty-shooty and confrontation happy.

Also RE: the auto-aim function. It's a waste. It only served it's purpose during the bike chase sequence.

I think it's a beautiful looking game. Snake's character model is amazing and I love that it hasn't got that ridiculously OTT plastic look to it that lots of current gen games have.

No dice. My game gets stuck on the loading screen for 20+ minutes after installing the update. Lame. :/

So I'm playing this for the first time on my new 55 LED and I seem to remember some Gaffers hating on the graphics for this game.

SERIOUSLY?? Shut up. This game is gorgeous. /rant

After playing through it yesterday and today, I do find that a lot of the environmental texture work to be on the bland side; not offensively bad or anything, but nothing to write home about, either. The strength of the visuals are definitely in the character models and the incidental details, on top of the typically excellent art direction.

On the plus side, the game sounds even better than I remembered it. KojiPro did a bang-up job with the audio in the game, that's for sure.

Audio is indeed incredible. It seems like such a step from recent games I've played from an audio perspective, even though this game is somewhat old now. :)

I think that's what I love the most. And the little small details. I love being able to read the writing on everything, no matter how small, for instance. It's just really well designed.

I think the game is beautiful, visually it's so well crafted, so meticulous, so polished, but on a technical level, I don't think it competes with the top PS3 exclusives. Certainly something like Uncharted 2 is way way beyond.

EDIT: Although by that point, devs had a little more memory to work with.

An example of how incredibly consistent MGS4 is, the under water swimming effect is the best I've ever seen on consoles, and yet you can very easily finish that game many times without ever knowing you can even swim.

I would have loved to see what MGS 4 would end up looking like if KP developed the FOX Engine before starting the development of MGS 4. Or did both alongside each other.
Technically, it's a mess, but the craftsmanship is so good that it makes people forget about that.

I think a lot of my technical complaints would go away if they would have found a way to get the whole game running at 60 fps, like they wanted to originally. That would have been something great.

As it stands, it's a more unstable 30 fps than MGS3, and I could at least understand MGS3's problems since that was obviously pushing the PS2 to limits unknown.

So how will this recent patch play into the upcoming 25th anniversary celebration at the end of the month? I don't think they would have bothered with this patch unless they had an upcoming project to promote. I don't think Rising would be the centerpiece of the convention. It'll have to be something new for the press to sink their teeth into.

I have no reason to think this will work, but have you tried disconnecting from the network before booting the game?

No idea if it was just a restart or disconnecting from the network as I did both at the same time, but yes it is installing now. Thanks. *bow*

All i wanted from that HD collection was PW and finally i can buy JUST PW.

Peace Walker got it right: it gives you an intriguing amount of info within the game and cutscenes, and if you want to really dig into it, there are tapes. I personally think there are enough hints about what happened to the Beauties within the fights themselves, and didn't have any interest in having it spelled out for me, but then Kojima's style remains largely about telling rather than showing.

I loved it, especially once I figured to use facecamo so I could take my time and enjoy the environment. Something about the opening cutscene to Act 3 is really cool to me too. Once again, I like the setting, and the conversation between
Snake and Meryl
was good.

I do hope MGS5 has less emphasis on camo. Not particularly a fan of having to crawl around everywhere, I miss the MGS2-style stealth gameplay, which wasn't about hiding in plain sight 90% of the time. Get rid of the Drebin system too, it makes things way too easy. On Solid Normal, I found myself just using the silenced M4 to take out most enemies. Make ammo more limited, so you have to rely more on a variety of techniques.

Act 3 has so much potential, shame it's completely wasted on a boring tailing minigame. They should've let us use various ways to get to the hideout. The map is really screaming to be used more effectively.

Act 4 should've had human enemies, the spiderbots are a pain in the ass. Would've made the sneaking more satisfying too.

What were the controls originally going to be like? People like to complain about the easier aiming here, but it's a huge improvement over the incredibly archaic systems from previous games.

I've noticed this problem to an extent myself. I haven't frozen on an install, but I have noticed installs are a LOT quicker when I just pull the ethernet cable out the back of the PS3 after I've finished downloading. Sounds weird but it works.
