PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Discussion Thread 2 (read OP first)

People who are saying they will cancel their pre-order are being major divas, but all the same, this has to be the most anti-climactic way imaginable to confirm the complete roster. It's literally "announce Nariko and Sir Dan", and then weeks later "okay, that's all folks! that's yer lot." WTF! If Nariko and Sir Dan were the last characters to be shown then why didn't SuperBot say so as soon as they were revealed! Instead they got everyone's hopes up and have subsequently attracted a shit load of negativity.

The worst part is that everyone was expecting the best to be saved for last, with maybe a real killer third-party character to slam the hype into fifth gear, yet "last" happened weeks ago. Oh well, bring on the DLC I guess. I've never hated the concept of DLC more in my life than right now.

Welp, people hoped that this thread would get more interesting.

LOOK WHERE THAT GOT US, GUYZ!

GAF wins again: we are allready at the ''anger'' stage while official forums still cling on ''denial''. Some delicious posts over there.

They are always in denial phase.

edit: I'm getting it still I'm personally covered for the roster anyone else would be icing on the top. I didn't have my purchase riding on third parties.

Right. It feels lazy.
There's no way Ubisoft was like "You know what? Nah. We don't want to promote our biggest franchise on the back of another game for free"

The fact Raiden and (new) Dante are in also makes me think publishers are the one who were getting to SuperBot to include their characters (for promotions purposes) instead of the other way around.

That is actually very interesting ''theory''. Mainly because I'm confident that Ubisoft would have given a character if they asked. We know that Big Daddy is included cause creators asked SB to include him. I could see that SB only went after Crash and got turned down, tho that would be pretty lame situation.

So who's still getting this on release? I am, but... =/
Me. I was sold on the first beta.

I am of course, pretty much every major first party character is in the roster.

Not to mention it is very fun.

Day 1 on PS3 + Vita here.
Still have fun, stilla good game. If we want to see a sequel with ALL OF THESE CHARACTERS. That you people are going crazy about then you have to buy the first game. I mean its pretty obvious they cant get every character in one game. Smash was the same way.

1st party DLC free would be really good imo. People like Wander, Kat, Dart etc.

the exclusion of wander makes me facepalm in real life. I know Omar and the rest said they were surprised by some of the fan requests and they are working on it..but not including a character from one of the most iconic games of the PS history

What? No, they're not entitled to getting my money "on the hopes" that they'll do a sequel with the characters I want. I hope the game does well enough for it to happen and I will jump in and play it eventually, but not at $60 when the characters I do want, if they're DLC, will immediately raise that price.

Not to mention the Team ICO games got the HD treatment not too long ago. Sony obviously still deems them worthy of consumers attention if they went to those lengths.

Not saying that, but if these are the characters then thats that.
If you still like the game based on its merits on what we have and not what we COULD have then get it. In the sequel we would get what we could have or not.

In the end it's your choice. I like the mechanics, characters etc...so Im getting it.
You dont like...the characters? Lack thereof of characters? Whatever it is. Then dont get it.
But bitching isnt going to change anything if this is indeed the final roster.
*shrugs*

Some people have different tastes in characters then you do. For instance, I don't think its wierd to say that jRPGs is the biggest part of playstation history to me. Outside of maybe the SNES, Playstation has easily the best jRPG lineup, and the jRPG craze that started with FF7 really did push Playstation into a position of dominance.

A single jRPG rep from anything would have been nice for me personally, and I don't see how anyone could call that out as being unreasonable. Its not like im saying "Jenifer Tate or not buying".

If you're in for Drake, Kratos, and Cole then good for you, I like the games those guys come from too but those characters don't really excite me as fighters in a crossover game like this.

yep it's one of their crowning jewels as cheesy as it may sound. One of the most iconic games of all time during the peek of the brands popularity

Also if I don't see a sotc or GT representation in the stages..then just fuckinglol...I love the gameplay of the game but that would be just beyond stupid

Too busy working on the BioShock: Infinite stage and New Dante probably.

That's what really irks me most about this. They could have done a lot better, even if third parties were being as difficult as this roster has made all of us assume. It just looks like they decided at some point that the game was going to be about promotion.

It's a fun game, but if you're trying to sell me on games that haven't come out yet how about you make it free to play instead of charging me $60 to get interested in Metal Gear Rising? They could have easily turned to first party IPs if third parties were shooting them down that badly.

*Points at avatar* "You're still wearing it"

Wait... what? Yeah I'm still rocking my Jen Tate-ified avatar.

This has been a constant protest against Superbot putting stupid fucking cash in third party characters, instead of what we want. Hell, I'd even take a reasonable first party character which should cost ZERO DOLLARS over an OK 20 person roster.

You know, like Kat, Dart, Rudy, someone, anyone from their extensive wholly owned intellectual properties. I just can't fathom how hard it can be for them to just get the ok from developers behind older games, or if they even need to considering said IPs are wholly owned.

The roster is lacking now because they were too focused on "who is cool" and who they can negotiate in regards to third parties. I've been very vocal against the cash in third parties, and now we're seeing the roster lacking because of it.

Words can't describe how disappointed I am.

SSB had a great roster despite how small it was because all of the characters made sense. This roster has a lot of BONE HEAD additions that make ZERO sense for Playstation. This is why I kept saying Superbot should have done the roster like SSB as well, which had only Nintendo characters for the first two games. Bringing in third parties before the game gets legs makes no sense because they can't negotiate the ones that would truly matter, instead we get leftovers that nobody wanted.

Oh so you know what they could have done and how the 3rd party devs were going to act?

I assume you work at superbot now?

I think I go with Sir Dan,Drake and Sweetooth.

From what I've played - Sackboy, PaRappa (even though he sucks now), Drake (after I get time with him) and RAIDEN EFF YEAH.

Off Topic (but not really): Nerd will bitch about anything. I though I was bad but holy shit some of you are having a meltdown.

I don't think you understand my post. Even if not a single third party was willing to work with them, they could have done better by replacing gaps with first party IPs instead of promoting third party games that haven't come out yet.

You have one problem: That they apparently were unable to secure some of the nearly necessary iconic characters like Crash, Spyro, Cloud, Snake, Dante (the one that's relevant to PS).

Then you have another problem, which is a lot more offensive: That they have filled the gaps with elements that do not fit whatsoever in the spirit of "celebrating the history of PlayStation"** and with promotional material for upcoming third party releases.

**We can talk all you want about how "MGR Raiden is cool though" or whatever, but the fact is this is what draws people to this type of game. Everyone wanted a PlayStation Smash Bros with all of our favorite PlayStation characters, not a roster that is randomly thrown together. It neglects the entire draw of this type of game. I just don't think they understand what the selling point of this game was.

The idea that Ryu Hayabusa may be DLC makes me even pessimistic about the potential sequel too, to be honest.

"Ok, so we asked Capcom if we could use Dante in the game, but they only allowed us to use the incarnation for the latest game. Should we agree to use him regardless despite the incredible backlash the character has gotten and the fact that this version has no ties to the PS brand, over using some of our own, more well-liked characters?"

I got the message clear enough. Capcom/2K, etc didn't exactly hold the devs at gunpoint and told them they HAD to use those characters.

I didn't hate big daddy's inclusion back when i was assuming some surpise characters were gonna be announced for me, and that bioshock infinite stage from the leak looked cool enough that I didn't mind its inclusion too much. But having bioshock as an invading fanchise in addition to all that other stuff really seemed to go over the line in Bioshock promotion. Especially now that the game is looking fairly light on overall fan service.

If you weren't satisfied with the roster up to this point, then you probably shouldn't have pre-ordered the game in the first place. I think the roster is ultimately lacking, but good enough that I was willing to put my order in a good month or two ago, and I'm not about to throw my toys out of the pram because a certain someone I wanted in didn't make it. However, I am incensed that Sony/SuperBot picked the most limp way possible of confirming the final line-up.

If this was the final roster count, shouldn't they have acknowledge this already? Pretty messed up of them to keep us in the dark like this.

Idk, I have a hard time believing this Sid Shuman dude.

LOL.

I'm a fan of the vast majority of those 20 characters, so this on disc roster is great. I'm sure they'll add more via DLC.

Now that this is out of the way, can people move on to something else to bitch about? Nah, or course not. Carry on, guys! I'll be back in a few days or so, once people have calmed the fuck down.

I pre-ordered the game long ago because I was under the impression that this was a celebration of PlayStation's history, and when the beta leak happened, SB were quick to say "the leaked character list is not representative of the final roster", which turned out to be a total lie. It's perfectly reasonable that now that I'm not being strung along with false hopes that I can make the decision that, to be honest, I should have started considering for a while now.

Played this game extensively at Eurogamer today. I say extensively, we couldn't put this fucker down. I went to the show with four other dudes and we were all itching to sit down and play multiplayer, all of us very competitive too. All the characters - that's the entire roster - was available to play right there on the show floor, and we gave it tons and tons of goes. I tried to work my way through all the chars, but only managed just over half of the roster.

But yeah, we couldn't get enough of it. First of all, I thought it looked pretty astounding really, especially the environments, such a vibrant and lovely looking game. Vita version is, as said, identical apart from controls that are slightly more difficult to accustom to.

Secondly, you guys should've seen the crowds. It was one of the only games still pulling people in droves for just one more go, even as the place was about to close. Only the very most pre-emptively bitter of cynics couldn't have a great time with it. It's a fucking mighty crowd pleaser of a game, just like it's inspiration.

Everyone's trepidation about the Super system disappears once you play the fucking thing and realised how good it is. I had serious problems landing supers for a while - fucked up the Vita controls and kept getting hit mid-activation the other times. I played mainly PS3 but a bit of Vita. I stuck mainly with Lv1's as a tactic but branched out occasionally and used a few Lv2's like Big Daddy's. Saw the occasional Lv3 kicking off but it seemed a fairly rare, and special occurrence, apart from Kratos' 3 which we saw a few times because my mate Dave kept saving up for it. We mostly saw Lv1's and 2's, another of my mates was loving the hell out of Drake's pushing the column over one, he scored three kills with it at one point. There's nothing like activating a super and wiping all your friends with it in one go, just the noise itself is so satisfying.

I started off with Jak and Daxter and made you guys proud, won by six kills on my first play and won a little Ratchet Sackboy keyring! J&D were really easy to pick up, responsive, and the little spin move plus the way Daxter get's thrown about on Jak's shoulder makes me quite nostalgic for the first game.
other characters I tried were:
Big Daddy
Drake
Kratos
Dante
Raiden
Spike
Nariko
Evil Cole
Parappa
Ratchet
Sweet Tooth

I walked away from the show with Spike as hands-down, my favourite character, with Nariko a close second. Spike is fun, easy to use, armed to the teeth with awesome gadgets, and I owned the battlefield with him. Didn't really discover his monkey summoning moves on first play, but there'll be time for that later. :) Nariko, Dante, Kratos and Raiden were all immensely powerful as well. Everyone gravitated towards their own favourites though.

Favourite stage has got to be Stowaways. It's goddamn beautiful, guys, and the transition from cramped to massive really changes the dynamic of the battle. Had a go on all of them at some point, including Alden's Tower.

So yeah, completely positive experience, couldn't be happier. Fuck the haters. This was game of the show for our merry lot, and we played everything - God of War Ascension, TR, Rising, Hitman, AC3, DMC.

It also made me think about how much joy it brings as it is, with or without DLC characters. I know you guys are feeling sore about the roster not being what you thought it should be, but you should still stay hyped because what the game has, in terms of characters, stages, gameplay and charm is believe it or not, ENOUGH. I hope Kat gets in there and I think there's a few little shames in what was picked, but overall I just can't wait for this beast to come out so I can started kicking ass and taking names again as soon as possible.

Also got my photo taken with Ami Nakajima. :D

All the game needed (apart from an extra 3-4 awesome first-party characters) was that single killer third-party announcement. A Crash or Cloud would've caused such a huge fuss, and is worth more than whatever it is Big Daddy/Heihachi/Raiden/Dante in total have brought to the table. 1 A-lister > 3 C-listers and a B-lister.

Awesome impressions.

...and the confusion ensues.

edit: looool grim reaper

He means DLC. The fan should've asked "Are there only 20 characters on disc?" To which Paul wouldn't have responded to. Such a letdown, this game could've been something truly awesome. Lmao, Sony should've just outsourced it to Namco like Nintendo did. I'm pretty convinced that Westerners just can't make a good fighting game like the Japanese can, but that's just my opinion. I'm a fighting game vet, been playing them my entire life. Some of them are ok, but none compare to the Japanese ones.

Why the hell have we not seen this then? The situation would be much, MUCH different had they actually staggered their reveals between roster, game modes, items and the like instead of blowing all their load on the roster early and being hush hush about everything else, outside of a tease screenshot here and there. It's one of the reasons why everyone remembers the Smash Dojo, everyone stayed up until Japan time to see what was going to be revealed next.

All the characters were already leaked so why would that matter?

Right after the leak they said that it did not represent the final roster though.

After Nariko and Sir Dan were revealed at PAX (what a lame way to reveal the final characters), they could have easily informed us then that the initial roster was complete. Instead they stay completely out of touch with the fans for nearly a month, and then let us know that's it by responding to a random Twitter comment.

I love how you post JonTron gifs, Scrafty.

So who's still getting this on release? I am, but... =/

Depends on how they handle the DLC. If they pull a Capcom, I might wait for a price drop. Though there might be a chance that we won't even know how the DLC is gonna be until after the game's release.

Big Daddy bothered me because it didn't fit, but it wasn't something that I was unable to get over. The stage (from a totally different, upcoming game) really bothered me. But I agree, it only really got to me when it became apparent how bad the overall roster was going to be fan-wise.
