Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Do they just mean they're changing analog placement (or similar superficial things), or that they're doing something that is not a conventional controller? Because there's no reason they can't just change a few things around and call it the Dualshock 4.

...few of which resemble the DualShock build that has become synonymous with PlayStation.

By this I'm assuming the current prototype is nothing like the DS, but it's entirely possible Sony will stick with what we have and call it the DS4 or something.

And if they new controller is similar to the PSVita in function, where does that leave the PSVita? Yes it's portable, but surely they would be competing against their own product?

Thank god, the Dual Shock is the one thing I hate about the PS3. The 360/Xbox Controller S showed us controllers that feels and works perfectly (minus the directional pad) I hope sony abandons the cramped together analogue sticks and moves them to an offset location like Microsoft did.

The PS controllers were always made for tiny fricken hands. Such a cramped and bad feeling design. The only one I ever half liked was the ORGINAL analogue controller Sony released in the PSone era, it had larger handles and felt bulkier.'

This was decently comfortable, WHY did they have to make it so much smaller :(

Fine if they improve the controller design e.g. copy the 360 controller.

Not fine if they start to implement crappy gimmicks like move, kinect or touch screen stuff.

No one wants Sony Gamepad?

I kind of do.

Heck, I'd buy a GamePad accessory for PS3 that lets me stream the games to it. I don't need any kind of touch screen, just off-TV play.

Touchscreen in the controller? Copying Nintendo again? Shameless.

Technically, Sony did off-TV gaming first (albeit in limited fashion) with Remote Play.

I'd prefer they save money or redirect it into silicon budgets rather than throw crap into the controller that no devs will bother to use in any compelling manner.

Maybe they'll do away with the "Playstation" branding all together. I kinda want that to happen.

Would be absolute suicide.

Anything other than adding a number 4 to the end of the word "PlayStation" and acronym "PS" reprents nothing but marketing headaches and confusion amongst consumers. It's pissing money down the drain trying to educate consumers before you've even come to market.

Calling it Orbis, PlayStation Orbis or dropping PlayStation altogether would be a disaster for Sony.

They need to fix the awful triggers and ship it with a longer charging cable by default. Otherwise it's good enough. I'd suggest swapping the left stick and D-Pad but I know people would cry bloody murder if Sony did that. Shit, copy the WiiU model and swap both just to really fuck with people. I rather enjoy that layout!

As long as it keeps the DualShock's analog stick placement, I'm down. I don't feel comfortable with either the 360 or the Wii U'd placement of the analog sticks.
I honestly don't understand why Nintendo did what it did putting the analogs on top of both the d-pad and face buttons. I almost feel like they do it just to be different, if a 4th major home gaming console existed I am positive they would have the left analog low and the right analog high.

The new console - codenamed Orbis - will be revealed in a matter of weeks, not months.
CVG's record is far from great, but they're the like fifth source to echo something similar to this sentiment.

In before the ignorant post complaining about something they haven't seen or use and have no idea if it's even better.

Oh wait beaten like a redheaded stepchild.

It needs to be the same exact size as the DualShock. Sorry giant handed freaks, videogames aren't for you. I suggest becoming a basketball player or chopping wood and it's totally not because I'm jealous, you monsters.

Also not going to do offset analogs. Buttons and D-Pad need to be above the sticks as well. I could hold and play the DS permanently without my hands ever cramping up.

If it's like Vita controls, just have bigger buttons, two better triggers and Vita's DPad and we're done here. The form factor could change too, to something similar do X360 pad.

This is needed... I'm tired of playing with an awkward controller designed in the early 1990's. You don't see me playing with an N64 controller do you?

It's about time they changed it up and tried something new. I wouldn't mind an xbox 360/gamecube style controller. Make sure it feels nice in the hand, grips nice, have better triggers etc.

They can keep their buttons the same to keep familiarity.

Before it's said and done, you'll be able to use the PS3 controller, the Vita, and the PS4 controller to play games on the PS4. And I'm fine with that.

The best thing about new consoles used to be seeing new controllers with more buttons and weird designs. Now everything will be the same because they perfected it, hopefully they can still do something weird/different though.

Normally I would say no, but way back when we found out the Vita was the first codename for the PSP2 and in the end turned out to be the final name.

I guess it will compete as much as the WiiU is competing with the 3DS (both systems are built around the usage of two screens). The controller will be more limited in usage since it isnt a dedicated device like the 3DS and Vita is. So personally i dont think that it will have much affect on the Vita or PS4 (as in competing against eachother).

Love it. The Wii U gamepad is by far my favorite controller now. Hope this imitates it.

As someone stated before, "4" is a bad omen in japan. I don't want it to be called Playstation 4; I love me some codenames!

"The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture."
