Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Best part of the OP!!!!111 It's gotta be GDC, right? But that would actually be "months" since it starts March 25, so maybe they have a conf before that. Seems a bit early if true

Well there was that rumour that the PS4 would be announced at Destination PlayStation at the end of February by a dubious website.

Hang on just a minute.

Several sources last year were adamant that only one new console was launching this year.

Everyone assumed that meant MS.

Does this now mean that in fact, it's the new Xbox that's launching next year?

That would be...unexpected.

I don't know about "adamant." Some people (like the GameStop CEO) were expecting one more console to launch in 2013, but it's not like they completely wrote off the PS4. It's just more of a wildcard than the 720 because of how many first-party games Sony is releasing for the PS3 in 2013.

Not really. Not when it comes to naming. Playstation has always used English words for its numbering. The "shi" thing is a non-issue.

If there's any reason they don't go with "four" it's to fall in line with the naming for the Vita.

If Playstation 3 controllers still work, then use those. I'm happy about a redesign.

Same here, the Dual shock doesn't work for me on many levels, the ergo's mean my thumbs are cramped up and whilst I can play for some time, it's never as comfortable as the 360-esque layout..

The simple answer for me was just getting a 360 style pad for the PS3, and I was happy.. if they follow similar ergo's with a touchpad, and I think they have a winner..

Having biometric sensors in a pad sounds pointless and gimmicky. The only thing it's going to do is drive up the price of the pad. Developers will experiment with it for a bit and then ignore it. Next gen's sixaxis.

The DS3 is not perfect but I think it needs evolution not revolution. I hope this isn't going to be change for change's sake.

Same here. Having my left thumb on the left 360 analog stick feels natural. It forms a straight line from my wrist to the tip of my thumb. Moving the thumb to the dual shock position is moving it out of it's natural position, causing strain. I have slight arthritis in my right thumb and I put it partially down to always having it in an unnatural analog position.

Hmm. I like the idea of having bio-metric sensors in the controller as that at least has a unique, innovative aspect to it. I could see games taking advantage of your bio-metrics to change the way characters react to you or something. However, having an LCD screen in the controller just sounds like it could be a problem. Not in the sense that it would be fundamentally bad, but that it would create a problem for Sony in that sense that people would start jumping on them for "ripping off the Wii-U." It could be cool in practice if true, but I just see a Sixaxis situation all over again.

Also, I'd be disappointed if they abandoned the design of the Dual Shock. Personally, I think it the best controller on the market and the most comfortable for me. I've been using it for so long that the controller just feels natural for me; much more so than the 360 controller, which I like too. If they could add the bio-metric sensors to the controller and kept the design relatively the same, I'd be totally down with that.

Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how things pan out.

Based on some earlier GAF posts from 2011, either MS or Sony were originally targeting fall 2012.

Things change though.

When did I say it wasn't subjective? Everyone else here is dishing out their opinions, why can't I?

Oh, it was aimed at everybody, not you in particular. There are just too many people who think one controller is objectively better than the other, when that's clearly not the case; they each work better for different game types, for different approaches to holding the controller, for different sized hands, for all sorts of things, with a whole heap of whichever-you-use-most thrown in for good measure.

I've found the DS range of controllers to be consistently the most comfortable for me, but that doesn't mean I think people who prefer the XBox 360 controller are deformed freaks. It just seems to be one of the areas where there's even more irrational console fanboyism than anywhere else, which frustrates me.

A little worried. Not opposed to change, just as long is it's not a bad change like going from Gamecube controller to Wiimote.

Hope they don't go crazy.

thought it was a great controller before getting accustomed to the 360 pad, then i realized it was just the familiarity of playing with it for years that i liked. hopefully the change moves it closer to the 360 pad in a few ways

I'm okay with them keeping the d-pad in the primary position like it's still the primary method of movement. I'm also okay with their convex analog sticks because hell, I'm used to it by now. But I'll be happy with any change they make to the thing as long as they ditch the absolute worst triggers on any controller in gaming history.

Need to see and use it before I judge. But i do hope they keep it dualshock compatible too

Speaking of which, what potentially cool things can be done with a biometric built in controller?

Yeah that thread made me remember that. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking with this ugly mess?
Not a fan of the DS but this was truly a laughable abomination.

That said i'm not too optimistic about a controller with biometrics...wonder what the point could be. But we'll see.

We were talking about this in the other thread a few days ago. It's obvious that Dual Shock has done its job in 15 years. Now it's time to move on with new technologies. Touch screen/touch pad makes obviously sense since touch controls have been really successful and really well received (also developers have found many ways of using them thanks to Android/iOS).
I don't think that the controller will be a tablet in size or anything like the Wii U controller. Front face layout will be probably similar to Vita's, just with a smaller screen (PSPGo like?) and bigger sticks/buttons.
I'm more curious about the biometric stuff and the new camera which might be bundled with the console.
