but it was pretty stupid either way to be doing that....

Yeah about the city part. He doesn't think he was trolling about the rest of it and even said so in earlier tweets to Jim Sterling.

What? I can still play games offline without Playstation Plus and am not even required to be a member to play games online should I choose to. But it sure is nice to actually be given something for being a member.

Not only that but I've not fired up any of the Capcom titles that requires you to be connected online to play it, or any game that has a 24 hour lock.

My guess is their market research showed that broadband subscriptions coupled with online consumer purchasing habits have probably outweighed the loss of consumers with spotty connections. Maybe they have a number that shows what purchasing habits the users without connection to broadband have.

I don't like the decision, it's one that will eventually happen, but I don't think we're ready for it here in the US. I can't speak for broadband consumer base in other countries.

Thing is they aren't going to make this choice if their research says there won't be a big payoff for it. Businesses sometimes take risks, but there's usually a pretty solid backbone of reasons why they'd make a big change like this. I'm sure the money they would lose by people upset by this choice enough to not buy their new system will be outweighed by what they get in return, and if not, well we'll see.

Just had a thought.....

How is always on any different than PS+? Is anyone upset about that? As soon as you are not paid up, you can't play the game right? Isn't this the same thing?

Love the discussion on this any way you look at it, it sure is going to be interesting

I have little tolerance for blatantly ignorant posts. You must be looking to get banned.

You have no relevant ground to hold up your ignorant post.

He was trolling his friend about the living in real cities thing. He wasn't trolling with his initial dumb tweets defending always on systems.

Because you can still buy games away from PS+ and play them offline on the PS3?

I don't have PS+ to confirm, but I'm pretty sure that even free PS+ games continue to work if the internet connection is dropped.

Again how is this different from MS'? I believe a connection is only needed initially, likely to fend off piracy, probably no different than Steam.

I also want to reflect on apologists earlier in this thread who claimed this Adam guy shouldn't be fired. He absolutely should be fired without compunction. He is personally responsible for MILLIONS of damage in negative publicity to Microsoft and should be held accountable. That's how the real world works. Period.

This thread...I can't

i wonder is some of his reasoning is probably how most of the higher ups feel, that people will just get with the times and buy broadband to use the next Xbox.

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.

Are..you being serious? Have you been living through the last 5 years with us? Do you know anything about subscription based services? Do you know anything about always online drm?

I think MicroSoft will probably write this off as the "vocal minority". The casual core gamers will probably accept this without much push back.

That doesn't really work because he already tweeted these without them being directed at anyone:

One allows you to play the free games it gives even if your internet goes down, the other doesn't.

Also, free games.

1. Dat Sunhi gif.
2. Even if the guy claims he was just trolling, it still shows that MS has at the very least, considered always online for Durango.

Sure, he meant no offense in making jokes about small towns and rural areas, but that is hardly what all the fuss is over. The always online thing still persists and even a developer all but confirmed it last night. That is what is causing the shit storm, and rightfully so.

Man this is Pre-E3, I can't wait for Post E3 lol.

If Microsoft doesn't reveal anything this month and smooth things over about the next box they put out I'll be very shocked.

If the gaming side of the Internet was a barometer of sales, the Wii would have tanked, and iPad sales would be in the toilet.

It's cute how all the pirates are upset about "always online", though. Oh, not a pirate, just don't have a stable Internet connection? Go buy a Wii U. Nintendo has your back.

So we're all pirates? Nice.

Losing is putting it mildly. These rumors or 'leaks' have been steadily building like tremors on unstable ground before a violent eruption...

if this really is their game plan, yes, this's a bad thing for ms. the idea was to announce & fabricate/spin the 'positive narrative' (interactivity! convenience!) all at once. that this 'dark narrative' has risen up & gained a life of its own pre-emptively should, if it doesn't, trouble them a bit...

&, if this really isn't their game plan, they should simply fucking say so, & clear the air. whatever 'strategic' benefit they might've seen at one point in not doing so (& what that could've been i have no idea whatsoever) i'd say has been kinda superseded at this point by recent developments :) ...

Oh man, I don't know if it's exclusively linked to this, but it seems #DealWithIt is currently a trending topic on Twitter.

This is exploding, isn't it?

See, they would if Always Online DRM did not break, watch Halo 5 bring Xbox Durango Diamond bring the whole service down for weeks on end and shit will get volcanic.

Well, made my choice to switch well, I see.

Mind you i'm in no rush to make my PS3 obsolete any time soon even after the ps4 comes out.

That's called a subscription service. What people are upset about are potentially having to be online to use a system they already OWN. This causes a problem with people who do not have a reliable internet connection, have one at all, and have to deal with bandwidth caps. Do you have to connect via internet every time you put your key in the ignition switch just so you can drive the vehicle you already paid for?

Andddd there we go. Didn't take long to discredit positive news. And why exactly would he admit to trolling if he think what he said was true? No one will do that if those are their plans.

Because he wants to save his job? What would be worse--trolling or telling people about a feature that will do nothing but cause bad publicity for the company?

If I'm the leader of a company, I want is released at a time where we officially respond to it. You know year won't so that here. All his comments have done is brought horrible publicity,

This isn't about that town per se, it represents towns all across the country that can't sustain 'always online'.

My point was that Blacksburg is not a good example of an "unconnected" town, because it has a very advanced net infrastructure... i understand what Orth intended, he simply used a bad example to support his slant against rural locals.

Diablo 3 seriously burned me out on the always online deal. I won't get the Durango if it's online only.

See this is why this strategy is poison for Microsoft.

Consumers have been EDUCATED on how terrible always-online drm can be - Diablo 3 and Sim City. Those were high profile fuck ups.

And Microsoft wants to launch a console with this?

I wonder is Ortho's tweets were a result of a manic bi-polar episode. That brazen careless tone he leads with is almost fatalistic.
