Monster Hunter Online (Capcom/Tencent, CryEngine 3) officially announced

Capcom probably goes for the platform with the largest userbase for Monster Hunter releases, rather than going for some sort of graphical standard - they would've probably had Monster Hunter on DS if it could handle it.

I mean, going Vita would've probably been expected otherwise pre-3G/4 announcement, considering the dual analogs and all, but it was probably foreseen that 3DS would be tops again, and 3DS could actually handle the engine the game uses.

Question:

I have yet to buy MH3U for Wii U.

I plan too in the next coming weeks.

Will the community for that game die with the release of this game?

No, the MH community is very dedicated, there's going to be people online as long as the servers are up.

Also, this game is for China only atm.

So don't release it on the 3DS? If Japanese kids bought PSP's for MHFU then they'd buy Vita's for MH4. Then at least the rest of the world could enjoy the game the way video games are meant to be played -- on large TV's. I just don't understand why Capcom's flagship franchise is being demoted to handheld duty. MH3U for Wii U is great, but it's still just a half-assed 3DS port. WTF!

Imagine a world where your thinking is reversed. All the action is happening on handhelds and home consoles are lower tier.

That's Japan.

Japan is what keeps this series stuck on handhelds. It deserves to be played on dual analog on a big TV in glorious HD.

There's three games in the series that fit that description, lol.

If this game sold in Japan like it sold in the west Capcom would hit the cancel button faster than you can say "MML3." Which it would if you had your way. :p

Well if Japan wasn't so fucking strange and played consoles then this wouldn't be an issue. Seriously, handhelds suck balls for action games.

Different != Strange. Japan seems to value local co-op in the presence of friends far more than the west. Handhelds make this much easier.

I dunno, I kinda agree but I wouldn't put nearly as much time into MH3U if I couldn't take it everywhere with me.

think of it from a company's perspective, making a game in 3ds obviously is cheaper compared to a game in vita, and since 3ds has such a huge market share it's obviously the better choice
not saying it wouldn't go to vita though, i still think it's a matter of time
and then, vita will finally be mine!

If MH was solely on console, I definitely wouldn't play it as much, even with online. I am out of the house for most of the day/week, 3G being on 3DS as well is perfect for me.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

There are other MonHun clones on Vita that are and/or look like PSP ports (God Eater 2, Toukiden, whatever else), if Capcom cared to they could have put out the same level of visuals they do on 3DS on Vita.

Just with a higher resolution vs a 3D display and a few other programming based, not content, improvements. There are more reasons they don't do it than the cost of better quality assets they wouldn't need to make.

They didn't mind putting a PSP game on PS3 and a 3DS game on WiiU either (oh, and a 3DS game on PS3, E.X. Troopers, and previously a Wii game on PS3, Sengoku Basara 3, likely more too), after all.

When Capcom has reason to believe the cost of AAA production values will be justified by the worldwide success of it all they will do it. Until then they'll keep trying with more Western friendly games like Dragon's Dogma.

Maybe at some point Monster Hunter will stop selling in Japan too, and it too will be experimented with like those other games, but by then it won't really be Monster Hunter either I guess, just an exploited IP.

I'm not saying "stop making handheld MH games" I just wish they would do one for PS4 or something that clearly isn't being held back because of 3DS. MH3U is a great game, but it's so clearly a disgusting 3DS game upres'd to 1080p running at 30fps. Quite pathetic imo.

I'll continue playing MH3U anxiously awaiting the next console or PC MH :)

A ground up MH for PS4 would be amazing...but Capcom makes these games for the Japanese market who prefers these games on handhelds, and 3DS is a monster right now. They're not going to make a PS4 MH when a 3DS game is what most people in Japan will prefer and it'd be guaranteed to cost more yet sell less.

No point pressing the issue IMO.

Wouldn't hold my breath. They're pushing Dragon's Dogma/Deep Down as their pretty console game.

MH on an HD system is spending way more money for way less sales. The only reason this exists is because Tencent is shouldering the entire thing.

Monster Hunter is 100x times a better game when playing local co-op, its not even close.

Why would anybody wish that experience to disappear is strange to me.

Because I'm not a teenager anymore and don't sit around with other teenagers and play handheld video games. I don't even know another human who owns a 3DS, let alone Monster Hunter. The appeal of this mythical "local" co-op disappears once you get married and start a real life.

Online or GTFO. HD or GTFO. Handhelds are for children.

Basically this. You are good people.

I've never seen that guy in the MH OT anyway :x

What exactly makes it better? Cause you can high five each other?

That's it.

Except for bolded part. I'm enjoying my Vita as a home portable gaming device.

What is this I don't even.

Though Capcom should go all out and release the future MH games on all consoles PS4/PSV, WiiU/3DS and X720, cross play within a constructor's hardware and with an online platform to transfer your save from any platform to any other one. That would be swell.

I am hugely in favour of this move by Tencent. As far as MMO goes, the Chinese, Taiwanese, Koreans and Japanese has similar preferences in both aesthetics and mechanics compared to other region.

It can be shitty for all I cared but this is a much needed baby step, the West is already allergic to anything that looks remotely developed from Eastern companies ( You're welcome to prove me wrong on this ). Doesn't hurt that I can read chinese as well.

Haha, dude, I'm 27 and played MH3U on 3DS with a few other 27 year olds just a few days ago.
Just because you don't know people who own a 3DS doesn't mean there are none.

Can't blame hungry MH fans that don't want to buy a 3DS or Wii U.

Lack of accessibility of this series is killing us, especially when it IS on other consoles/PC in Japan.

How is MH Frontier compared to the mainstream MH games?

That should give you a decent barometer for how good this game will be.

We can't blame people for shamelessly port begging and system bashing? GAF was founded on being able to mock people for that.

There's nothing wrong with port begging, but at the end of the day, if you really love a game or its concept and you truly want to play that game now, then you really should buy the system and that game.
