I wonder if it was something present early on in anime that just sort of became the norm due to its influence. To google!

edit: wow there's an old gaf thread on this: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457248
Ninjas aren't real. GAF spitting truths. :( lo

The winning designs for the NASA anime character contest look great, I like this one.

About the Character

"Hi! My name is Ell Hamma and I can hear the sky. I don't really remember where I was born, or who my parents were... well, some people call me "The Daughter of Earth". I have a big cloud tail too... I have never seen anyone else like me!

When I was younger, I met a man who worked in a huge laboratory. Dr. Werner was his name. He took care of me and helped me to understand my strong connection to the sky and nature. Together, we learned many things.

After he studied how I was able to understand the sky, he developed a new machine, which I use to explain to humans how the water and energy cycles work. Humans can't fell it naturally like me. I know when and where will rain, because well... this planet can talk to me!"

gargantia on the verdurous planet - 13 [end]

- Chambro. That is all.

- as silly and nonsensical as the episode was at times, it was still a mechanically sound ending, with various elements seeded throughout the show coming together in one cohesive whole. The shonen-time conversation in the beginning is a throwback to the post-squidsacre speech Chamber tosses out, for example; it's a consistent logical foundation to just what he does and this goes all the way down to the amore like 3/4 of the episode in.

- Basically, everything you expect to happen happened, but it never felt like it was cheating to get there. When the
final sacrifice
happens, it doesn't come as a surprise, but in that lack of surprise is assurance that it wasn't just an asspull.

- I'm going to assume that many things are going to get fixed for the BD box release. There's some nice cuts involving two doughty-thighed cg robots shooting things at each other, but otherwise the episode was filled with off-model art and other such doodads. Those explosions looked nice, though. It was a mixed bag and I wish this final send-off for the series looked a little more complete.

- There was
Amy flying in a glider, but no Ledo and Amy flying together in a glider,
thus confirming that he ended up tying the knot with Melty instead. GLHF AMY

- I think the best compliment i could give is that i'd like to see more of what happens to the characters, and the setting. They're not exactly paragons of character development, but what's there is enough to piece together a semblance of depth.

- there was no need for that awful Ishikei illustration at the end.

Good show.

Completely agree with you. I think there is plenty of potential for a second season and I would most definitely watch it.

The Devil Is A Part-Timer - Series

So this show was a lot of fun. Some really great humor and I enjoyed the characters. It was definitely better when it wasn't focused on action but I don't think it ever really went full-on battle anime anyway. Something about the delivery of this show was great. Haven't watched a comedy like this in a while, honestly.

Chiho was best girl.

Hoping for a second season.

Now time to watch Gargantia properly. I stopped at like Episode 3. =\

getting :deened pretty hard here. This is like Ozma in that you have these old iconic designs that people apparently can't properly animate anymore.

madp, get a screen of Keiji holding the axe in front of the wooden pillar. His neck doesn't look like a neck, it's more like a growth from between his shoulders from which his head has sprung forth.

Utena is one of the few shows i've ever seen where knowing the end plot makes that second viewing radically different. You start seeing things in whole new lights, and you think radically different things about the characters.
But it's not so simple and trite as a "twist ending". Things are just more complicated than what you want to see the first time.

If this was a drama we wouldn't have to worry about these proportions because the Japanese effects industry is ass.
