Xbox One Will STILL Function if Kinect Isn't Plugged In.

No No No!!
If the kinect is not bundled it will not be as well supported and IMO just be a repeat of last gen.

If its about price/Value MS can give fee game download...

My problem with this argument is people are assuming that because the Kinect is bundled with the console that it will bring some revolutionary change to the way we play games. I have seen jack shit so far, that, despite Kinect 2's increased power, convinces me that this camera will usher in some new way of playing games. It is a completely different situation than with the Wii, which was entirely based around motion control, and fairly compelling motion control at that.

What we have with the Xbox One Kinect now is a device that yes, comes with all consoles but will be not properly utilized by most publishers and developers because it takes time, money, and most gamers will just opt to use a controller and press a button instead of shouting at their TV.

Please MS, don't split the Xbox One/Kinect userbase by pandering to people that want to strip the console of any unique or interesting features for developers to play with.

They aren't. The userbase aren't split. The Xbox One/Kinect userbase is still 1:1, just now users don't HAVE to have Kinect always connected. Developers still have the 1:1 userbase to work with. If Developers (or Microsoft) make having the Kinect connected desirable and wanted, gamers will have it connected. For example, I'm giving Kinect a try before I decide to box it or keep it on. If I enjoy the voice navigation and controlling the user interface with Kinect, I will keep my Kinect connected. If I don't enjoy it, I'm boxing it until a game I'm interested in utilizes Kinect in a must have way. If Halo 5, for example, allows me to control the game with my voice (Aka, Matchmaking Team Slayer, vote Valhalla! Loudout 2! Reload!) I will use my Kinect for Halo 5.

Also, think about this, one of the best Xbox One features, Game DVR, will most likely be only useable with Kinect. You have to say XBOX, RECORD, to record, if you can't do that with a controller, I'm, and I'm sure anyone else excited for this feature, will have Kinect plugged in.

This decision isn't bad.

Kinect isn't a gimmick with the way they are using it on Xbox One.

Kinect is really the only way that multitasking and many apps are feasible on a console. You can't type with your controller, and you don't want to have to stop playing your games.

Also there are many little features Kinect offers that are truly valuable... like auto signing in, switching profiles when you swap controllers, switching the split-screen location depending on where you're sitting, Skype for every console, etc.

Plus it acts like a IR blaster to control your living room devices...

Funny, I've been typing with my controller for years. I'd bet real money I'm faster at it than anyone would be moving their hands to get an imprecise cursor to move.

Auto sign in for Kinect and the PS4 camera look fine. Switching profiles and split screen is all good, but not $100 good.

And I will never want to Skype on my console while I'm doing something else. Why would I want to shrink the useable area of my gaming screen so my stupid friend can tell me about the wicked fart he just ripped? I've got an iPad and a phone for that shit.

This is indicative of two things to me:

1. They missed the mark big time with the initial announcement.

2. They are really afraid of getting their asses handed to them this generation.

Either way, this is a win for all. Release a version with no Kinect bundled and I'll preorder.

Yet still bundled with every Xbox One
It's either like the Wii U Game Pad in that they want to ensure a baseline of what to expect with each console, or it's like the mandatory online patch: they can't actually work this out WITHOUT a patch at this point, and so have to bite the bullet, burn through launch stock, THEN sell a system without the Kinect.

Either way I don't expect to see a Kinect-less version within the first several months if we ever will.

Kinect is what differentiated itself from the PS4. Now there really is no differences except one is much weaker and costs more, while the other is much more powerful and costs less.

Who the hell would pay for the former.

It's still in the box.

Because of the complaints. Don't throw everybody into some console war category.

I've wanted to love the Xbone, but Microsoft has been the one making that all but impossible.

The wording seems like everyone but it obviously isn't everyone; it is a segment that with every change MS has made they want the next change before they "think about it." It is ridiculous.

This this this! They are making a huge mistake if they do this IMO.

Now there is no reason under Gods green Earth that this thing needs to be bundled. Drop the Kinect and offer a us a version at $400 like the PS4. Let the market decide.

Just because Kinect was "mandatory" before doesn't mean people would have bought a game just because it had kinect developed in mind.

This also raises another thought in my mind. Pretty much everything MS said pre 180 has been an outright LIE.

First kinect was mandatory and you weren't able to shut it off. Now it's not even required. Good job gamers. Not lets force them to offer a SKU without kinect and drop that price.

Two generations ago, we found out that desperate Nintendo was best Nintendo when it came to the GameCube.

Last time, we found out that desperate Sony was best Sony when it came to the PS3.

Is it Microsoft's turn?

Edit: I should note that I'm referring to the console's first party game lineup.

Through the internal microphone embedded in the Xbox one?

Huh? The fuck are you talking about? MS can still integrate voice controls in the console to be used if you CHOOSE to purchase Kinect 2. Since the console is fully navigatable without Kinect, it is no longer required.

I mean they've backtracked on everything else with Kinect and they're still going to get demolished in sales because of the price difference. If Kinect is no longer a central requirement to the console then there is no reason for them to get demolished by Sony. In fact, they could actually undercut and outsell Sony if they chose to get rid of Kinect requirement.

It isn't just for games. You wouldn't use it to take advantage of the dashboard functionality? What if it is implemented slightly into your favorite game and you use it?

I simply have no use for it period. I enjoy the 360 just fine without it and would prefer to have that same option with the Xbox One. Options are a great thing, but here I am being forced to pay an extra $100.00, even though I don't want Kinect. They would go a long way in appealing to both sides of the fence on this, but at least this is a step in the right direction.

Wow that is great news if true. Now make a $399 kinect-less model and bundle it with Halo 5 and I'll be there. :p I could care less about the Kinect and I literally only got the 360 to play Halo on anyways.

Still going to rock the PS4/Wii U combo regardless.

Wonder how Microsoft's NSA buddies feel about this

Good, so don't bundle it then.

It's called a PS4 (but would be weaker hardware wise)

They are building the functionality around it, so you might actually want to use it.

And for those that don't like it, the choice is now available to unplug it.

Not bundling it would put it as a niche accessory like the new PSEye will become

They are really addressing concerns people have had, love it

$399 and preorder switched..you can do it MS :p

I am all for this current 180. It opens up way more doors to people if Kinect is not a 100% requirement to unction. I am against people asking for another 180 and dropping Kinect altogether.

Good. MS (and all these companies for that matter) needed to experience the fear of being steamrolled to get their act together.

Wonder if any Kinect enabled game developers will comment on what happens to the their game if the Kinect is unplugged mid way through play. The list of games that support Kinect in some way is pretty large. Do they really want to break the experience and say "plug in Kinect to continue" or is it just going to be relegated to a tutorial option "play with Kinect?"

As I said, in don't want to wave my arms around like a shithead to control my TV or games. Version 1.0 or 2.0 doesn't matter one fucking bit.

So put your straw man away and focus on what I actually said.

Word.

The fucking wafting your arms around with gran fad is dead, Microsoft are always 4-5 years behind the last big thing and then go balls deep when everyone is bored to shit with it.

Voice recognition.

LOL.

He later clarified in a more recent post on the subreddit that he meant R&D costs, not manufacturing costs.

R&D still impacts retail prices. Its money they spend and thus needs to be amortized.

I dont want them to say the "console will work" I wasnt expecting it to spontaneously combust upon removal of kinect

I want them to say "You can unplug kinect and still play your games/watch your films etc"

the quote implies that you have to have your xbox one on and then you can unplug it. Am I reading to much into it by thinking that if you unplug your Kinect and then start your one , you wont be able to use it ?
