The manga was violent too, which was the good thing about it.

Well tbf I remember the anime episode in season 1 talking about Magikarp dishes, and Ash/Team Rocket Crew were thinking up of dishes about eating it in dream bubbles.

I hear that the pokemon anime was menat to be a fairly short affair (a regular two-cour series) and then it just sort of extended and extended when Nintendo saw the cash cow they had on their hands, perhaps this is the "legit" adaptation of the first game that they enver actually got around making.

This is an adaptation of the Pokémon Red and Green games, not of Pokémon Adventures, so no.

To be fair, these are the storyboard designs for how they will look in the anime. They don't have meticulous detail in them like you would for a one-off conceptual design like you see in the games. For instance, this is how Red really looks:

There are 700 episodes and more with no end in sight featuring the yellow thing. This looks refreshing, just a shame it could not be 4-12 episodes.

It's worth it. You can get the boxes for the RBY and GSC arcs for around 30-35$ from online booksellers.
