This was the best past time on field trips; swapping Lunchables Pokemon "cards."

My class got into soooo much trouble with these. We paid we more attention to the cards than the stuff at the Science Center. And you know what? I don't regret it. Fond, fond memory.

Holy shit. I think I remember this. :O

The pokemon merchandising was EVERYWHERE back then. I kind of miss it.

I loved this cereal! Was so good!

Ahhh, I remember getting Pokemon Red back in 1998 when I was a freshman in high school. Well, it was for my little brother who was in 5th grade at that time we had fun playing the game. I will always name Charmander "Commando" because my little brother always name him that.

Does anyone remember the PokeGods? Ahhhh good times. Wasted ton of papers and taking it with me to a long school field trip trying to get them and never got the PokeGods.

I also had tons of Pokemon cards (like thousands) even the Japanese version. I regret tossing them out years ago :(

I had all Pokemon games even the Green and Pokemon Stadium 2 (Japanese) and most of them are missing over the years. I bought Pokemon Yellow again at flea market and bought Pokemon Pikachu edition Gameboy Color for 4 bucks from Thrift Store about 3 months ago. Still works!

The only card I'm missing from the original set is Charizard, I'm too scared to look at how much it's going for on ebay these days...

Going back to the gen 1 and 2 games after playing the GBA and DS games are difficult for me.

But Gold will always hold a special place in my heart...it'll just be hard to play the originals, thank you HeartGold remake.

Hahaha, yeah both are great games. That does remind me that that new Yu-Gi-Oh! game is coming out sometime for 3DS...

Coincidence, but I ran into this Ronald theme earlier today you might like. I absolutely love the TCG OST. Some of my favorite 8bit tracks of all time. I also really liked Ronald's character design, felt it was a unique appearance for a rival character. Although his actual personality is somewhat similar to Gary Oak.

Anyhow, here's the song.

Ronald's Theme XG

I love Pokémon TCG's music a lot (TCG2 being my favourite of the two). The comments lead me to a great cover of Ronald's theme. Also I'll link my favourite from TCG2 for good measure!

Theme of Ronald (FamiTracker VRC6)

Duel Vs. Fortress Leader

Already heard some of these myself, but I hope they delighted the ears of someone else who hasn't!

Anyway...I know that classic stand-bys like the Machamp and Hitmon- families are likely to be selected for Pokkén. But I REALLY hope Primeape makes it in. He was a great pick in the first two gens, and his short-lived arc in the anime was also funny and memorable for me.

It'd be even funnier if Pokkén itself was based off of the P1 Grand Prix detailed in that arc, as well as on Gamefreak's website at one point.

Man, this is classic. AMazingly enough, I have a few of these in my binder. Man does it take me back.

It was really cool having a friend who imported the Japanese Silver version months and months before it came out. He didn't like it at all (probably because it was all in Japanese lol), so he let me borrow it for a long while. What a weird gaming experience that was. Mysterious and confusing, in a good way. I remember being impressed by the day/night cycle and Unowns the most. Also the greatest feeling in the world: "I've been playing the new Pokemon game, it is awesome, so many new Pokemon" "ha, whatever dude, such a liar, let me guess it is called purple or some BS? people always sa- HOLY SHIT, IS THAT A NEW POKEMON?! LET ME PLAY!"

I absolutely love the original, Toriyama-esque Sugimori art for the original Pokemon. When did the transition to the new style happen? Was it gen 3 or 4?

Not only that, but I liked the bulky 80s/90s anime sci-fi lite meets nostalgic Japanese youth themes. Hasn't been the same since.

Some GBC/GB games actually have the battery in a holder. Just take it out and shove a new one in.

It was extremely rare though.

Would have made things much simpler if all games were like that.
But then, that would have added like a dollar to the manufacturing cost, and for most games, they probably weren't thinking about people still playing them by the time that happened.

IIRC, the Tengen NES/Mega Drive games had battery holders.

A few of those are actually getting evolutions now! Anyway, I never saw any Pokegod rumors at the time but I do remember some for Venustoise.

Also when you exit Viridian City in Red/Blue you can for a second see a patch of grass that was unreachable by any normal means in the game. I bought a GameShark specifically so I could use the walk through walls code so I could get to this grass as I was convinced rare Pokemon would appear there... of course it was just generic Pokemon on route 2. I was so fucking disappointed. Check out the patch of grass just south of the north exit house of Viridian Forest.

Wow, I've never knew about that grass patch. I think they tired to make it so that it's apparently the same exact grass patch from earlier (before heading to the building that leads to the forest).

The weird thing is that it isn't an accurate replica :lol

My fondest memory of Pokemon as a kid was back at school when I was ten. I was the only kid in the school with an Action Replay cheat cartridge. What did that mean?

I HAD MEW.

So what did I do? I sold mew to people at £5 each. Never told them my secret. I made enough to purchase GoldenEye 007 and Mario Kart 64.

I DID THIS, although in a different manner. I cloned it in Gold and Silver. I sold mine for like a dollar each though I think. Guess I sold em cheap :D

Yeah after that failed my backup plan was the back of Bill's house as it appeared as if there was an opening behind it. Lots of rumors back online in 1998/1999 talked about a Togepi egg being behind there. Again disappointed as fuck when that didn't pan out.

Are you saying they were trying to make the player think the building they just stepped out of was the same building they walked into before the forest? Because that would mean the entire forest was in that building.

Yeah that's messed up but now I'm looking at it on the south side building why is there an inaccessible shrub (the kind that can be cut) in the exact same location as the one on the north side?

Genesis=Mega Drive.
I mean does it also apply to the NA cartridges? That's pretty cool. I can just open up any Sega Genesis games with batteries and replace them with ease?

Er, good point. I did not think of that. :lol

Now that random grass patch makes even less sense to me! I wonder if they've planned something, or maybe it was left overs of a layout?

Ah no, I would assume that isn't the case. I'm on about the carts by Tengen.

Unofficially manufactured, so they don't conform to the standards.

Seeing all those games in the op brings back so many memories. I think Pokémon snap was my favorite out of the n64 games. I still have a fully working gbc but unfortunately all my games were either stolen or lost forever. I think I might need to revisit the games on an emulator sometime.

Seeing this made me want to play my HeartGold version. Then I couldn't find my old DS. Then I realized my HeartGold was in my old DS. Then I looked on Amazon and saw that HeartGold is $80 fucking dollars.

Gen 1 is perfect despite well, being a bit janky in places.

Gen 2 is boring. I like some of the new pokémon, night and day and days of the week were cool and I liked the Red fight. A lot of the rest of it...blah. Most pokémon have horrible level up sets compared to the gen 1ers, the TMs somehow managed to be even worse than Gen 1 for the most part, the E4 is too easy and too low level. Some of the music is fantastic though.

Heart Gold saved Gen 2 for me, made the region awesome again.

Crystal would have but the list of Pokémon you can't find in the region is a who's who of Man God's favorite Johto Pokémon and pisses me off whenever I remember that.

Stadium 1 is rad, Stadium 2 is even radder, love those minigames. Also a huge fan of Snap and Puzzle League. Slightly less of a fan of the card game but it also has some rad ass music.

Im gonna post my first Pokemon experience:

I went to a friends house and his brother was on the couch playing the gameboy. I remember asking what he was playing and he said "Pokemon".

I nearly laughed in his face, because at the time, Pokemon wasnt cool to like. Not to mention I didnt really even know what it was. Just that it was some weird japanese game that wasnt Mario.

Anywho, later that night, he deleted his save and let me play for a few hours. I was instantly hooked.

We literally played all night long, I called my parents, told them I HAD to have the game.

The next morning, we woke up and watched the cartoon. Ill never forget when "Who's that Pokemon" came on and we both sat there arguing about who it was. (likitung btw).

From that point on I was so hooked that me and my friend would play over the phone. Each doing our own thing, but letting each other know about what Pokemon we caught or what gym we just beat. It was the old fashioned Skype for us.. it was awesome.

Then, one of my friends at school showed me his pokemon gold version. I had never even heard of such a thing, and for good reason.. it was in japanese. He was playing through it without text.

At first, I thought this was lunacy. Playing a game without being able to read the text? Are you mad?

A few weeks later, I went to Gamefellas (shoutouts to anyone who knows that store) and got the Japanese import of the gold version for like 100 bucks. I played the absolute fuck out of that game.

Anyways, those were my early memories of Pokemon. Now, being much older, I cant wait for what X and Y will bring. Hopefully some kids out there get just as much enjoyment out of it as I did when I was a young'n.

*High Five* I've got all 151. Got these back sometime between 98 and 01 (I think). Kept them ever since.

It is still one of my life goals to have a complete Base Set. I just recently acquired a Base Set Blastoise. My reaction wasn't quite like this, but I was pretty fucking happy ^_^

Someone told me there were level 100 Dragonites and other rare Pokemon in the grass outside of Pallet Town. So finally, I got one of these:

uM7hf2k.jpg

And tried myself.

The game froze >_<

Instead, I used that gameshark to catch damn near every Pokemon. I spent HOURS with a bunch of friends just playing Pokemon, and passing the Gameshark around to complete our Pokedexes. Eventually someone's file would get deleted. Gameshark did that kind of shit. That didn't phase us at all, though. Time to beat the game again!

I still remember the code for wild Pokemon:

01XXD8CF

XX=15 for Mew!

When Gold game out, I finished the game... and proceeded to catch EVERY SINGLE POKEMON, LEVEL 100 SHINY with that Gameshark. I still have them all.

Random stuff:

Awesome 30 minute trance medley of Gen 1 music
151 Cries from an old Pokemon PC game. Surprisingly AMAZING.

Monster Brain is like the best. You can edit everything without having to use codes.

There were a few different ones if I recall.

DUDE! I've been looking for this for a very long time... I can't recall which magazine I saw this in, but I literally wasted like 5-8 hours trying to catch Yoshi due that lol. The same exact method. Wow.

That sounds like an awesome device. I need that in my life.

I'm tempted to come up with something for avatars for this thread. As in, a little logo for our avatars similar to hype threads. I think "Gotta catch em all" might be good.

It's pretty great. I remember making a level 100 Caterpie with Fire Blast, Blizzard, Thunder, and Hyper Beam.

I have so much love for pokemon as a franchise and the early gens especially. I was THE age to grow up with pokemon and it and beast wars where everything to me. I vividly remember being given my cousins gameboy pocket on our trip to Florida and then buying pokemon red to play their and on the flight home, I even remember my battery dieing on the flight home when I was in Mt. moon.

Man one thing I wish I had was this deck of pokemon playing cards(like for poker or whatever) with super nice art on them that I had as a kid. I think it was a gen 1 thing but may have had gen 2 pokemon as well but I just remember it having fantastic summer themed art anyone know what I'm talking about?

Omfg I had the same idea as you for Gold n Silver and selling rare pokemon using the game link clone method. Unfortunately I bought my copy while on holiday it was a 2 in 1 cartridge with both games and a poor Engrish translation from the Japanese. There was even a part where a Team Rocket guy told me to Fuck Off before battle.

So because of region issues I couldn't do it.

On the bright side I had the game maybe nearly a year before release.

Gen 2 is so perfect to me. I played it after I understood the basics of RPGs, in Red I had only used Charizard and just powered my way through everything, so it was a blast creating a perfect team. The sprite work was amazing and the color palette is still one of my favorites. I hope another game comes out with the pastel look of Gen 2.

I found a small image of it that might be it. Pikachu has a tube.

Something about the washed-out look of GSC is incredibly endearing to me, and I still think it has the best sprite work in the series.

And since it pertains to the first generation games, the Pokemon Origins special is going to be nearly two hours long!

Can we discuss Gen III-VI on the conditions that a) we never, ever post any fan-art. Ever. b) we don't be weirdly keen about certain Pokemon. and c) we don't wear inverse-nostalgia goggles?
